I had the fortune to escape my nearly insurmountable work hours to take a peek at Disney's latest animated film Lilo and Stitch. After hearing numerous reviews on both sides of the fence, I can honestly say that I believe that Walt would have enjoyed this.
Lilo and Stitch is one of the most heart-warming movies that Disney has put out, eclipsing all of the recent films. It combines the best of the new styles with the emotion of the classics. The pacing is excellent in all but a few sequences. The animation is top notch and loaded with great little personality details that an observant viewer can enjoy.
The humor is a little tongue-in-cheek, and younger viewers may miss many of them. For me, I was laughing through most of this movie, and my wife was equally cracking up. Stitch's animation alone is worth a hundred chuckles.
The art style of the characters did not initially remind me of Atlantis, but for some reason they became more so as I watched. The backgrounds are detailed, with interesting effects with real-life photos scanned in at a couple of places. Some of the backgrounds had strange blurring effects that I didn't particularly like. There were several backdrops that looked as if they were paper instead of cel- real or computer generated. You could see the grain of the paper in one shot, and then the next cut would show the background perfectly smooth. Was this intentional? I don't know.
Before this movie came out, much was made about the Elvis material. To be honest, there really wasn't much- but it worked when it was there.
I love this film, and would reccomend it to anyone with a quirky sense of humor. I hope this one does well.
