Let Them Eat CAKE!!! Trip Report

****Looks like none of the pictures are showing after the site changeover- you can view the pics on here if you'd like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/sets/72157630140601410/

I posted the PTR a while back... http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=762372 and now it's time for the trip report!!!

As you probably guessed from the title- there's going to be a bit of cake in this TR. The first cake actually happens before we even left town for WDW. As promised, I made Kendall (DD4 at the time) a Toy Story themed Barbie Dreamvette. I was under a lot of stress- final trip details, getting ready for Kindergarten, family staying with us for 4 days before the trip, work issues, everything with this cake, and a car accident in the middle of it all. The gumpaste Mr. Potatohead and Alien turned out really well... even if I had to replace the 5 with a hat due to a potato mishap...

[/IMG]
6023942738_4c28f88df4.jpg
[/IMG]

...but the cake looked more like a lumpy version of Lightning McQueen meets a Trans Am or Firebird.
6033438305_783d3e5723.jpg
[/IMG]

The worst part- I was already upset about the cake, but in the 5 hours I was away from the house- the weight of the Alien took out the far side of the car, the seams at the door and detail lines started to split, and potato fell and lost his 5. I made some last minute attempts to fix it airbrushed it a bit in hopes that people wouldn't notice all of the issues and said “who cares, I'm leaving for Disney tomorrow!”

6033442735_13766f6b2b.jpg
[/IMG] (still drives me nuts that after 3 fixes that stupid back tire still kept going flat!!!) All in all- I hated the cake and was so happy to come home and trash it! I haven't hated a cake this much in a long time.

So, now it's the evening before we take off for WDW and the vehicle situation is still up in the air. I hadn't heard back from the collision center by 7pm, so I figured my Jeep wouldn't be ready. So, we started prepping DH's car and I put in a stroller rental request through Magic Strollers. Around 9:20pm I get a call from the service rep handling my vehicle informing me that the Jeep should be ready by 8:30am the next morning. It did end up being ready the next morning, but by this point plans were in full swing for using DH's car plus he gets better gas mileage, so I picked up the Jeep- loaded up DH's car (after he took our dog to “Doggy Camp” and got an oil change)...AND WE WERE OFF TO DISNEY!!!

Sammie (DD2) was all happy, but Kendall wanted nothing to do with pictures!

We didn't leave until about 9:30am, but that worked out well since we hit downtown Houston with very little traffic.

[/IMG]

It wasn't long after that where we got on I-10 and headed east.

We hit Beaumont and started to get excited because that meant it wouldn't be long before we were out of Texas and in Louisiana.

Great update and pics!

It's amazing how we are both doing a report of a vacation at the same Resort, yet few of our pictures show the same thing. Your experience was very different than mine. How many vacation spots can you say that about?

This is what I try to tell people when the say "you're going to Disney again?".

One thing that was the same was eating at "StarringRolls". I took the same recommendation from Miller Poppins and yes it was yummy!

Looking forward to more!

Thanks! It's really funny- I was sitting there last night awake over some school issues with the kids and in a moment of Disney distraction- the same thing crossed my mind. The experiences, while both great and positive, are so vastly different. I got so much of the "you're going again" response from a variety of people (and not in the same context in which Kendall used "again" in the surprise video). I'm still amazed at how different our August trip was from our December trip.

Still dreaming of the cupcakes!!! Thanks for reading!

I really could go for one of those cupcakes right now! It wouldn't help with all the weight I gained on the trip, but I swear it would help with my stress levels. :D

You had me cracking up at the DH tshirt thing! Early in our marriage I had these issues. I mentioned it to my MiL once and she gave me some pointers. There's a technique for this. And it works! Yes, it's more work for me to be the person in charge of packing for everyone in my family but it's worth it to be the final word in what pieces go with us and can end up in our pics. LOL!

I've been meaning to ask about how y'all did with the heat. Big concern for me in less than 2 weeks now! Since we live fairly close with similar climates then you're the best candidate to fill me in. The hubby made the comment yesterday that we're going to really suffer with the heat at WDW but I pointed out that Central Florida has consistantly had temps about 10 degrees cooler than us for quite some time. I've been watching. The plan is to get out early, return to the resort around lunch, then get back out around dinner time. Tracey's even more nervous about me in the heat after I overdid it helping Chandler mow one of his lawns yesterday afternoon. It was **only** 103 outside. :lookaroun Yeah. I think the kid is secretly plotting to kill me. :fork: I took a cold shower, drank a bunch of water, napped for an hour, then slept another 11 hours last night. I still feel drained. And the headache I woke up with this morning was a killer. According to the old man, once you overdo it in the heat you're way more sensitive to it for the next few months. We'll be finding out soon.

You're soooo killin' me with the Starring Rolls cupcakes! I'm soooo saving my splurges for specific treats. That cupcakes are one of them! :slurp: I think I love that Sams laid claim on her cupcake. Attagirl!!!!! :sohappy:

I like your packing plan. DH always forgets things + he usually has the most unused space in his bag...so it would make sense to have me pack- to ensure that everything that is supposed to be there (i.e. no ratty shirts) is there and extra space is utilized. I like it! :D

We had no issues with heat. Everyone else around us looked like they were about to melt, and it was a bit more humid than TX has been of late, but we were comfortable the entire trip without any kind of misting fan or cooling neck bands. Dh was on his own, but I made sure the girls were dressed in really light outfits and I wore athletic gear that wicked away moisture. We left the parks between 2 and 4 pm most days, wore hats during peak sun periods, and tried to stay hydrated. We honestly felt like we went to FL to cool off. I think you guys will be fine.

The cupcake was so awesome :slurp:, but the big cake (which will be front and center once I get to the next day of my tr) was the big splurge. I can't begin to tell you how dangerous it is to have a layer cake sitting in your room. :ROFLOL: Amazing- but - dangerous!

Yeah, the first time Tracey & I went somewhere together when we were first married he packed like 2 pairs of shorts, 7 shirts, 3 pairs of drawers, and a pair of socks. What the heck? How does all that equate??? I tried to teach him to pack by outfits: equal numbers of shirts, shorts, socks, & drawers plus extra socks & drawers. He still wasn't very successful. After that I took over. The boys I've recruited to an extent. It started out with "Go get me 4 pairs of shorts & bring them to the living room." We'd lay them out. "Now go get me 4 of your favorite shirts." Then we'd match shirts to shorts to create outfits. Often there is editing sending them back to exchange shorts or shirts. Then I can have them fetch a specified number of drawers, socks, and sleeping shorts (athletic-type shorts). Chandler being all-knowing at 15, he now just sets his outfits out on his bed folded and ready for me to review. I come in when he's ready, we review, and for the most part he's given the okay to stuff his duffel bag. Apparently, when it comes to packing I've got him trained but ~~sshhhh~~ don't tell him that. It's because he knows everything. :animwink:

Good to know we'll be okay in the heat. I'm counting on additional humidity. I swear, we get some humidity here now but noooooo rain. It will rain all around us, lightning & thunder, dark clouds, etc. but we get not a single solitary drop. If you watch the stinkin' radar you'll see reds & yellows flowing right at us...then it vanishes. What the heck?! LOL! I've decided that while at WDW I'm not going to attempt straightening my hair much at all. I think y'all are in for a biiiiig surprise over past trips at what my hair is really like. Between the humidity, swimming, sweat, & rain I'm just gonna let it do it's own glorious thing more and fight it a whole lot less.

I have faith that the girls, especially Kendall, will be OK with packing down the road. She understands matching and having footwear options. If anything- I'm going to have to careful of her overpacking. That's awesome how you've got Chandler trained on it. We've had a few vacations where DH packed along the lines of what you described with Tracey. The first year we were dating, we went on a trip to the hill country that centered around tubing down the Guadalupe and a possible trip to Schlitterbahn...and of course, he didn't bring any bathing suits or towels. :hammer: We've had to buy clothes for him on the road just because he's so prone to forgetting key things...golf shirts, socks, bathing suits- you name it!

We seemed to be the only ones who found the weather to be refreshing, but Texas has been an oven since May. The news said that the high pressure area parked over TX is supposed to move middle of the week. I think our projected highs are in the low 90s by Friday and 50-60% rain chances at least three days in a row. I know my parents (who are in south FL) have said their highs are closer to the 95-98 range and my good friend who lives in Jacksonville said their expecting highs in the upper 80s later on this week- so it's almost certainly going to be cooler there than it is here. A friend joked that it'll cooling off enough for us that we might need to invest in a set of Snuggies. My hair doesn't straighten well in heat or humidity, so my flat iron rarely sees the light of day from April through to some time in mid-October. I'm sure your hair will look just fine :) plus I find it a lot easier to get out the door when I just embrace my curls. It's still some work, but it's not the time required to straighten things.

*OK- I'm on edge b/c of some school issues I have to address bright and early tomorrow- which may get ugly...so you might be seeing a lot added to this tonight as I work through some of my nerves*

The girls had a nice long nap to get ready for our 8:15pm adr at 'Ohana. We missed out on it last time because of monorail issues (and me forgetting that boat launch was an option)- but we were going to make it there this time...no doubt about it! I snapped this patriotic pic while we waited for our monorail...

6062095193_2b4a680680.jpg
[/IMG]

...and then we were off. The monorail was huge for the girls- everything from riding on them to spotting them once off. Each of them insisted on a window seat. I caught this one of Kendall trying to find Wilderness Lodge on our way over to the Poly. Even without evening EMH service, it was worth it to stay at a monorail resort to add that level of entertainment for the girls.

6062644336_0864f8a81e.jpg
[/IMG]

Once there I snapped this blurry Aloha pic. This would quickly become a fave word for the girls on the trip. Every time they heard it on the monorail they'd loudly say aloha- and DH and I would reply “ALOOOOOHA.” A few people stared – like we were strange or something, but I really didn't care.

We had some time to explore, so we started inside. The girls wanted to swipe the surfboard, I got the obligatory Boutiki pic, and Kendall crawled on benches and made an idol friend.

I was off ogling the Dooney bags (mom just got me a really nice new bag, so nothing new for me...but hey, a girl can look) when Sammie created a stir while off with DH. This is how I found her...

6062651376_cf995ba194.jpg
[/IMG]

I was laughing so hard and a little horrified...I suggested she take off the Mickey slippers but the CM in the shop thought it was so hysterical that they suggested Kendall try on a pair. Kendall was all for it and it wound up being probably my favorite picture of the entire trip.

6062703110_0d4b4b5f96.jpg
[/IMG]

What's funny- before leaving that evening- I was thinking that the outfits my mom had made for the girls (i.e. these floral pillowcase dresses) would look so cute with yellow shoes. Sammie was wearing yellow sandals, but Kendall had outgrown her yellow shoes and was in silver footwear. So, by donning yellow Mickey slippers- they fulfilled my vision of yellow footwear with these outfits.

It really is a pretty resort and both DH and Kendall said they want to stay here next time, but we'll see. I don't know if we'll be back at Disney at any point in 2012 and if we do, there's a good chance we'll be heading to Maui in May...so I think it would be overkill to stay at the Poly. Of course, I don't see us being back at WDW until 2013 unless I work in a cruise or DH and I take a couples trip (more on that later). The sun was setting and it was time to head in...

6062655922_e8d541c7cc.jpg
[/IMG]

We checked in and naturally, there was a wait...so, we headed over to Tambu Lounge to hang out. We had to share seats with the girls, but DH and I were thrilled that the Texans/Jets preseason opener was on in the lounge. While I am first and foremost a NY football Giants fan, my current hometown team is next on the list and I really would like to see them do well. Plus we're pretty into fantasy football so any kind of preseason perspective is helpful.

(I can't tell you how many times I barked at them to get their hands off that window!)
6062107757_f9c41a6576.jpg
[/IMG]

It was decided that we needed some "attitude adjustment"- and with that- DH headed up to the bar...

So, now I had my Lapu Lapu in hand :D...
6062657318_4d5422d40c.jpg
[/IMG]

And DH was up at the bar again shortly with K ordering drinks for the kids (I know one day I'll be keeping my kids away from the bar!!!).

6062109305_faf9f0279f.jpg
[/IMG]

We waited a bit for our table, but finally our buzzer went off. We were seated on the side off of the main dining room which upset me a bit, but DH wasn't budging since we could see the tv in the lounge from our table. We also could see some of MK from our table- even if it was an obstructed view.

The food was a bit of an issue at first. We were given a flower token to signify there was a food allergy at the table (this was the meal I feared most) and after some time we got everything cleared with our server and the kitchen...then just after that, they bring us all of the sauces...including the peanut sauce. In our server's defense, she didn't bring it, but someone on staff did and we had to have it taken away immediately. They brought us back the safe sauces and started with the food frenzy.

DH and I loved the meal and the girls seemed to enjoy certain things brought to the table as well. I just grew weary of peeling shrimp for Kendall and Sammie kept trying to steal my noodles and dumplings. We'd later ask about not receiving any bread...they felt it was too great of a risk for Kendall. They offered to bring it anyway if we thought it was safe enough, but we declined. K's allergy is relatively new (major anaphylactic reation on Memorial Day) and the few times we've had small reactions involving cross contamination they have come from bread and baked goods.

Now here's what's really nuts...I'm the only one who enjoyed the bread pudding. Of course, the rest of the fam doesn't normally go for sweets like this, but still. Oh well...more for me!!!!!!!!!

[/IMG]

Kendall and I got up and went to the main area of the dining room for the birthday celebration, but everyone was getting super antsy (plus we got this look like “where the heck did you people come from?”...so we left shortly after that. I left DH to take care of the bill and I took a picture of sushi as I wheeled the girls around trying to keep the little beasties entertained.

DH finally made it out and it was time to head down to the Poly beach for fireworks. I think the girls would have preferred to just watch the movie playing on the beach (Lilo and Stitch), but they got fireworks! They also found a friend. I don't think any of them watched Wishes...they just tried to build sand castles in dry sand. By the time we found this spot, I had less than 5 minutes to set up the camera. It was a mess, but I got a few shots I thought were pretty cool. Plus- by using the remote- I could actually watch much of the show without seeing it through my camera lens.

Then it was back to the hotel for the night. I just wanted to get the kids in bed since the next day was a super early - SUPER SPECIAL -day, but DH insisted on bath time because of the beach time. I also had to wait for the kids to fall asleep so I could put out their surprise bday and unbday outfits.

(Sammie's)

It was sooooo tough keeping all of this in hiding. Kendall wanted a pair of Twinkle Toes and she liked the ones I got her, but I had to hide all of the boxes as they arrived from Zappos. Sammie's were even more difficult- I really didn't care for them, but Kendall begged me to get them for Sammie as her unbirthday shoes. :D When I bought Sammie a different pair of shoes as a decoy- Kendall was furious- telling me the shoes were stupid. And of course- just try hiding a big pouffy petti skirt! The worst was the personalized ears... they arrived in a Disney Store shipping box (i.e. it had characters on it), which automatically raised suspicion levels with Kendall :lookaroun (we usually get boxes late afternoon/early evening- so she was right there when it arrived).

***off to make lunches, but I'll probably be posting the beginning of bday day a little bit later...and hopefully the BIG CAKE!!! :slurp:***

Kendall's 5th Birthday!!!

I woke up early to a) get ready b) make sure the girls' outfits were still resting properly at the foot of the bed (you never know who is going to kick and roll in the middle of the night). I really should have spent more time getting ready b/c this would wind up being my day of bday amnesia! At least the day was finally here! Kendall had been "counting sleeps" until her birthday and begging to find out what we'd be doing on her actual bday...and now it was time for her to find out.

We got out as the sun was rising for our 7:05am adr at Chef Mickey's. I kept telling myself “it's early, but at least it's in our hotel.” The girls also really loved their bday outfits and Kendall was doubly surprised to find that I gifted Sammie with the Twinkletoes she'd wanted me to get her.

There was a small line when we arrived at the restaurant, but we were moved right into the picture line. We thought about actually buying this pic- being bday morning and all, but it turned out blurry so we skipped it. We sat down to wait for the chef and I snapped a few pics around the room...including the make a wish pic which seemed PERFECT for our bday meal!

The chef came by and gave us a run down on what was safe and what wasn't. She also offered to get Kendall some fresh Krispy Kremes that hadn't been around things produced around nuts- very nice. While I forgot to use them for the bulk of the trip, the chef was also kind enough to notice the little aprons I bought the girls to protect their outfits. Too bad the girls were too distracted to eat.

A little over 2 weeks before the bday, I emailed Chef Brian at the Contemporary. After some email chatter, I got my quote and put in my order with private dining. I was really nervous about the cake...nervous I wouldn't be happy with it, nervous it would be delivered to dinner instead of breakfast (the girl in private dining- while very excited, kept saying dinner so I was biting my nails on this), nervous that it wouldn't be there at all, etc. But...I'm also a worrier, so this is normal for me.

While the trip was a surprise, Kendall had a pretty good idea about the cake so there was no need to be stealthy when inquiring. I kept trying to tell er it was a cake I helped design for a coworker's daughter. She bought it since the Belle is this other little girl's fave and they're going to WDW just before Christmas- BUT- Kendall begged for a cake just like it. My first response was "what about your Barbie car cake" - and of course she said "why can't I have both?" I think this was about the time we broke it to her that she'd be going on vacay for her bday and we'd try and do her Barbie cake before leaving and the Belle cake while traveling. The whole trip lie became pretty complex and I didn't confirm for her until very late in the game that the cake was going to be a reality...either way, the lies and everything worked well.

OK- back to the actual bday...I initially asked at check in at Chef Mickey's about the cake - they calmly said it was back in the kitchen and to ask our server about it. So, I asked our server about it and I guess there were multiple cakes in there (understandable), so she asked which one. I knew all had to be good when I saw her face light up and she went on to tell me how pretty it is!!! YAY!!! REALLY BIG HUGE YAY!!!!! I also brought it up with the restaurant chef and she too went on about how nicely the cake had turned out.

I've got to be honest...I was more excited about the darn cake than I was about Mickey. If you can't tell - I love cake...almost as much as I love cheese. The woman in the family sitting next to me overheard much of this and heard me say I might just cry. She was afraid she might be crying along with me. And in all of this- Mickey was getting closer to our table- and both girls were refusing to eat...

Here's Sammie awaiting Mickey's arrival...

Kendall soon joined in...

Oh well, first up was Mickey and he at least gave an extra snuggle for the bday girl.

(ok- 2 out of 3 looking up at me...I guess that's the best I'm gonna get)

(snugs for the bday girl!!!)

Goofy came by next and while the girls were happy to see him, the table before us in the rotation forgot to get his autograph...so they interrupted our meet and greet moments. Goofy at least came back and played some more with the girls and made sure to check that we weren't doing autographs. The kids at the table next to us were starting to encroach a bit on our space- making for some cramped character meeting, but I overheard the parents multiple times trying to get them back in their seats. While it wasn't ideal- at least they were trying.

(Clearly they enjoy goofing around!!!)

I would also notice that the girls being so small have no clue where to hug the characters if they don't bend down- and even then, the kids still put their hands in odd places. I think next trip we're going to have to practice character hugging etiquette.

Donald came by next for a little visit...

(Sammie's finally joined the party, but I don't think Kendall wanted to share)

And then it was time to hug good-bye to our favorite duck...

And then...yes then, it was CAKE TIME!!!

Our server told us she'd bring it out when they did the napkin waving and bday celebrations for all those celebrating. Kendall was shocked the minute it was put in front of her.

Next our server lit the candles ...

(I even recently noticed that the candles selected were all yellow and white to match the cake- it didn't hit me until I found the candles when cleaning out the small bags)

And look who decided to stop by- napkin in hand- so we could sing Happy Birthday and blow the candles out...

(I'm personally in shock- I couldn't have scripted this better- Minnie has become her fave of the fab 5- and I think K is equally shocked)

Minnie had to finish making her rounds with napkin waving- but seriously- so mind blowing how PERFECT this all turned out!!!:sohappy:

I don't exactly love this pic, but our server took a pic of all of us around the cake. It was also around this time that I realized I left the video camera back in the room. Win 1 for birthday amnesia.

I still am so pleased with the cake. I really wanted to cut it and taste it – red velvet cake with passion fruit mousse filling :slurp:- but Kendall just wanted to look at it. So, here are some cake detail pics before our server boxed it up.

In case you were wondering- the marble appearance in the fondant is intentional. I requested it to help refine the look of the yellow (it just seemed like a lot of yellow without it)

Chef Brian and crew really did a WONDERFUL job!!! Also, a HUGE THANKS to Kelly/sweetpee_93 for passing on the info about Lurkyloo - the cake guru. It all really helped make this happen in such an AMAZING way!!!

***I think I'm going to call it a night. Hope I can sleep. Thanks for reading!

I love the birthday outfits! Soooo adorable!

And OMG! The cake! It turned out so awesome! How was the taste? Y'all didn't cut it at breakfast? I can't wait to hear about the taste. That was the most disappointing part of Brian's cake last November. I'm thinking I'll be ordering a small-ish cake for our anniversary dinner at the Yacht Club. I need to place the order towards the end of this week. I'm still not 100% settled on design. I'm so torn!

Good luck with the school tomorrow. I'll be sending positive vibes your way that all goes well and the outcome is a good one.

Okay, wow...the cake and the outfits are fabulous! It's clear that you went through a ton of effort to make Kendall's birthday special...high five! :sohappy:

And by the way...you love cake and cheese? I think we would get along famously :D
