James Hetfield, frontman of metal titans Metallica, has confirmed that the band is currently recording material for what will hopefully be a followup to 2008’s Death Magnetic, which was the band’s ninth studio album.
Talking with EMG, Hetfield explained that there are three guitars that he’s using for the recording of new material at which point he pulled each out and explained a bit of the history behind them. It’s pretty fascinating as a guitarist to see each instrument and to see the wear and tear they’ve endured as well as the love that each have received. I only hope that my electric guitar one day has as much character and splash on it.
Talking with RollingStone, drummer Lars Ulrich stated that the band has written nearly 20 songs and will be working on them as well as other ideas to see what kind of material can be used for new studio material.
There was early excitement when Metallica released a “first pass” version of a new track, “Lords of Summer,” early last year. Lars also stated at that time that 90% of the record was actually written. Yet, almost two years later, and Metallica is just now entering the studio. No word on if the song will be included or what the sound will be like.
