Is the Yeti all that bad?

I don't get what the big thrill is about Everest - that is, why people think it's just a jim-dandy ride even if the Yeti is broken. What it is without the Yeti is a tame roller coaster that goes forward, then goes backwards, over and through some sculpted fake rock-work. Yippee. Oh, plus there's a really lame projection that shows a shadow-yeti ripping up some tracks. Which is a lackluster illusion that doesn't really fool anyone.

The Yeti is the ONLY reason I got excited about Everest. I saw it in action on a TV special and thought it was amazing. I wanted to see it in person. I have ridden Everest about 4 times and haven't seen it AT ALL.

Disney fail at its finest.

I'd replace the projection with a mechanical arm. Not the whole beast, just an arm reaching out for the train. Make the escape a lot more dramatic. ;)

I think what I love about Everest, even without the Yeti, is that it manages to tell a really great story without sacrificing thrills. After you ride it you really feel like you have been on an adventure! It's not just going backwards, it's feeling the cold everest air blowing on your neck. There's something in that ride that makes it, different.

Maybe you should ask some kind-hearted soul to ride with you and point it out. I've never not seen the Yeti. While I don't doubt your statement, I can't personally fathom how you could miss it, unless you ride with your eyes closed... *Shrug*

I've seen A mode and B mode and there is a huge difference between the two. That said I never thought Everest lived up to its initial hype. The best Disney attractions have great music and complete storylines(Indy, Splash Mountain, Radiator Springs, TOT), I always felt that Everest lacked both.

While I do love Everest, I do think there is a big difference between A and B mode. I noticed right away when the yeti didn't work. I think what makes me the most mad about the whole situation is Disneys poor idea of a fix. Even if its not in the cards to bring the yeti back to glory, you can at least come up with something better than a strobe light. With all of Disneys resources, I have no doubts that an acceptable repair could be done, but they choose not to.

Having ridden it numerous times before the Yeti breakdown, I can honestly say that ending was drastically more exciting. The way the Yeti moved and swung at the car was so lifelike...I remember ducking a few times on the ride. Not to mention how much easier it was to actually see the beast. Now you're in the dark with a strobe light and an unmoving object.

Still a fun ride, but a far cry from the exciting encounter it once was.

Apparently I need to go watch a video of the ride when the yeti worked. I've never ridden it, but can't imagine it making a difference. Although, I guess it'd be like dinosaur without the Carnisaur.

After reading about the "non working" yeti for so long when I went to WDW 2 years back, I made it a point to watch out for this bad show.... Ok..so maybe its just me...but I rode EE 3 times and managed to see him for about 1.2 seconds everytime. Maybe I am just an old fart on a rollercoaster..but I could not even tell if he was working or not since you go by soooooooo fast.;)

When he was working in A mode, he was fully lit. He's actually in a large cavern/room which you could see under regular show lighting. You could see him the whole time from the moment you dove down into that cave until you passed right under him. It was a good 3-4 seconds. Long enough to see him, but short enough to go "Woah, what was that, I need to ride again to see".

For the person looking for a video of him in A-mode, look for the building-of TV special. ("Engineering the Thrill"?) They show him going through his motions at Imagineering before being shipped to Florida.

I know we're talking about the Yeti not working, but I want to point out something I noticed.

I find it amusing how were all trying to describe the Yeti to each other because there is no clear video of it. No one knows exactly what it looks like detail. WDI really did create a Yeti :P

I rode Everest many times back in the day with working Yeti. I am on the fence with this one. I will say that I absolutely believe that the "legend of the working Yeti" on the internet has created much hyperbole about how much it impacts the ride experience. It looked very cool, it was actually a bit scary. It gave you something to look forward to for the final segments of the ride, which is otherwise not particularly thrilling. I remember back when it was about a 50/50 shot to get animation or "disco", and you'd have no idea if it was working, and would be let down if it was not. Now, however, we absolutely know that it will not be moving, so disco mode does not bother me and I don't feel let down at the end.

Either way, it was only 3 seconds of the ride. 3 seconds... if you knew where to look. 1.5 or less if you did not. I do not believe that it ruins the ride without it. I think saying its like Test Track at 15 mph or Tower of Terror without the drops is a bad analogy. The main point of Tower of Terror is the drops. The main point of Everest is that it's a roller coaster that goes forward and backward in and around a big mountain. I'd say its more like TTBaB without the Hopper animatronic. Story is still intact, experience is still fun, but loses the impressive factor.

I've also been very vocal in the Everest effects status watch thread that, while I understand that the Yeti has become kind of a symbol for the current state of WDW and TDO, I also dislike that so much emphasis is placed on it because it downplays the fact that every single E-ticket, save for maybe Haunted Mansion, needs just as much attention.

OMG WOW!!! Ok, now I totally see why it makes a difference. The part where they're sitting in the room and have it going (without the ride).....WOW! That truly would add to the ride a lot I think!

Wow...that really does shed another light on it when you watch the one with just lights flashing o.O
