Is the Unoffical Guide to Disney book worth it?

If I've already decided when to go to WDW and where to stay, is buying the "Unofficial Guide to Disney" book worth it? I've seen it recommended a few times here, but am wondering what type of info. it offers that I couldn't find on the message boards or online. At 800+ pages it seems so daunting! Is it really a helpful resource?

I concur with getting it at the library first (although I see you've ordered it). I checked it out from my local library because I wanted to see if the book provided any information that I wasn't aware of and just to see how these guidebooks are. For a first-timer I think it could be very beneficial/helpful, but I did not find it worth purchasing cost. Reading it once was sufficient.

Every copy at the library was on hold for a few weeks, so I bit the bullet and ordered it from Amazon. It seems really helpful, although a bit overwhelming!

Go to your local library and look in the travel section. I'm fortunate to have a really, really good library in town and they have a lot of Disney travel books. I've taken out a few of them over the years. My library also uses a system where they are linked in with 77 other libraries and books can be requested if your local one doesn't have it, and will come from one of those other libraries. Really good resource that people seem to forget about in this day and age.

The book can seem overwhelming, but if you have already selected your dates and where to stay, you will have no trouble navigating the remaining chapters. The detailed descriptions and recommendation for each attraction in a sometimes humorous, but objective way are well worth it. I also like the restaurant information, transportation information and ideas for saving time, money and stress to be valuable.

Have you seen those people holding maps, wondering what to do and then coming back saying things like 'I didn't know that was there' or 'I didn't know about that ride/restaurant?'. Those of us that read the guide never have that happen. We are well informed on all attractions. We know what will suit us and our families. We know which restaurants themes will be our favorites and we know to book them 6 months ahead of time. If you are a super planner, this book is a must. If you are the kind of person who likes to be more spontaneous, at least you will make educated decisions.
