Is Maleficent still a villain?

Just saw Maleficent and the question I came away with is how we are now to perceive Maleficent and the dragon after this movie? At Fantasmic are we now going to root for the dragon since we know that the dragon/bird/man character is not evil at all and really quite a sympathetic character? And how about Maleficent? Should she really still be a part of "Unleash the Villians?" Next time I see the dragon, I think I might want to give him a hug. I'm feeling very confused right now.;)

Maleficent is entirely separate from Sleeping Beauty; two different stories. The parks will continue to use the animated Maleficent, just like always.

Similarly, when Alice in Wonderland was released in 2010, the Mad Hatter didn't get a red curly wig and a Johnny Depp accent - he's still the regular animated Mad Hatter in the parks. They're separate movies with separate stories.

They have already done a limited meet n greet with the new Maleficent. I do not doubt the original will remain in the shows, but it would not surprise me one bit if the new Maleficent became a regular or at least a semi-regular meet n greet character.

Is Prince Phillip a murderer?

yes, she is a villain. . . or else Magic Kingdom security is going to have to take that prince into custody.

This is also not without precedent. For years, "animated" Cruella DeVil met guests at MK/DL, and Glenn Close Cruella DeVil met guests as DHS/DCA. Two versions of the same character, still separate from each other.

Current portrayals of Maleficent aren't going anywhere - anyone who thinks Fantasmic is getting a rewrite is off their rocker.

Quite true.

I think we will see a working Yeti before they ever update or modify Fantasmic!.

It's this change in the story that most surprises me since Disney has always been so big on creating a story line and then telling that story. For younger generations that have not seen the original Sleeping Beauty, like my son's girlfriend who saw the movie with us yesterday,I would think they may be a little confused when the original story continues to be used. And if we now know Maleficent is really not evil, doesn't that take a little something away from things like Wishes and Dream along with Mickey (she's in that right?) where her evil character is part of the story?

They're two separate stories. That's why all the character names aren't all the same (the three fairies). Maleficent is totally separate from Sleeping Beauty. It doesn't negate or change the animated film. They're totally separate.

Maleficent in the animated film is pure evil, that's not changing. The new movie is a reimagining in live action, with a different looking Maleficent - think alternate universe.

They're independent of each other. Doesn't change Fantasmic or Dream Along or anything like that.

Basic story is a fall from grace to evil, then ascension to redemption. If they have a live action Maleficent I doubt she will be as beautiful as Angelina Jolie. The movie was fantastic, very well done, and the suprise is who really is Aurora's true love.

Yes the dragon is good and Mickey is evil... in Fantasmic the evil Mickey is trying to raise prices across the park while the dragon is trying to stop him... sadly Mickey always wins.
