Is a Disney cruise worth it?

The only place where I feel they are a bit on the money grab side is with alcohol. I think the reason they do it is to discourage people from drinking to excess, which I believe is a good thing.

I am not normally a big drinker, but when I am on vacation, especially on a cruise, I enjoy an alcoholic beverage now and then. I may have a drink in the early afternoon poolside, a cocktail before dinner, wine with dinner, and perhaps a drink during the show. This is not everyday, but its not uncommon for me (again when on vacation). With other cruise lines that do beverage packages, you are paying one price. Disney charges you every time you turn around. The also sell the wine package, which gives me flashbacks of the Disney Dining Plan (that's not a good thing)

If you don't drink, or drink extremely limited amounts, then this is not an issue. Also, as I said, I don't think they are doing it to nickel and dime people, but it sure feels like it.

If I am on an all expense included vacation, I like to have all expenses included. Even if I have to pay extra for a drink plan, I like having it paid for (which is the opposite of my feelings of the DDP oddly enough)

The free soda on a DCL cruise does nothing for me either, I very very rarely drink soda. I know for some people that is a huge draw, but if I want something to drink that's non-alcoholic, I usually have water or I am at the bar ordering a seltzer or club soda with lime.
See I found drink prices to be very reasonable compared to say Royal Caribbean. If you don't want to buy a drink package some of those cruise lines get pricey, but DCL has drink of the day and a glass of wine was well priced. Plus you can bring a decent amount of alcohol on board and pick some more up at stops.

That said I too have debated sailing but the limited kids club is really holding me back.

I want to take my family on a Disney cruise in dec 2022-January 2023. With everything we’ve been hearing regarding the state of the parks we decided to do a cruise instead and hope it would be a better experience. My wife and I are former cms and have heard nothing about great things about DCL during our time with Disney.

Would you guys say that DCL would be worth it? Or is Disney using the same practices with cruises as they are the parks? If you know what I mean.

This would be a 7 day cruise, also with a 2 year old. Thanks!
We all know a Disney cruise is over priced.
Before the pandemic, a Disney cruise was over priced and crowded.
Today, still overpriced, but at this moment, not crowded, so that’s a plus.
Will the Disney cruises be not as crowded by the time of your cruise?
Only the pandemic will tell…

I don’t mind if they are overcrowded but if I’m paying that premium price to sail with Disney, I just want it to be worth it.

Crowds aside, in my mind, if you just want to go on a cruise, there are many, many better for less money, but if you are a Disney fan and be in the Disney bubble, a Disney cruise is for you.

That what it comes down to. You pay a premium for Disney…

Honestly, this comment feels a little snarky and unnecessarily dismissive. I've been on a lot of cruise lines. And in fact, there are NOT many many better for less money. There are many for less money. And there are many that are better, with an even higher price tag.

If you want excellent service and excellent family-friendly entertainment and excellent child care and an excellent private island and larger-than-average staterooms with excellent maintenance and cleanliness and excellent adult-only areas and rotational dining and fireworks at sea and amazing character interactions that your child (or you) will remember forever, and 5-star specialty restaurants, without a smoke-filled casino -- then a Disney cruise is for you.

That what it comes down to. You pay a premium for Disney…
This is undoubtedly true. And I don't think anyone has tried to say otherwise.

On a scale
Just got back, and what an experience. I have not experienced Adventures by Disney or any of the international properties, but the rank-order of Domestic experiences is clear to me.

1. Disney Cruise Line
2. Aulani
3. Disneyland / Walt Disney Worl

Sooo on a scale of 1-10? We’re probably going to book tomorrow

I was under the impression that the crowds were only ever a problem on the Dream and Fantasy. Are the Magic and Wonder unable to hold their crowds as well?
Have done both Magic and Dream and found crowds were not too bad on either. Obviously when visiting the private disney island there will be less people on island with the smaller ships, and walking around the ship is easier on Magic vs Dream but neither felt too crowded. Dream has bigger theaters so it really doesn't matter. I found I liked both ships for different reasons. Dream's scavenger hunt and aqua duck is great and the adult bar areas are more robust, but Magic is easier to move around and their kids club was better set up and more interesting(at least to my kids) and the Dining might have been a touch better too, but I would sail on either in a heartbeat, going with whatever had at the better price.

We are thinking of skipping our WDW trip in Spring 2023 and cruising instead.

Looking at Celebrity Beyond for their Eastern Caribbean sailing. While the Disney cruise is tempting because...it's Disney :D, the Beyond looks like a beautiful ship with dining that appeals to us. And I think we are the right demographic - couple, late 40s.

I won't even get into how much less expensive cruising on Celebrity's newest ship is compared to the WDW trip we were planning. I'll have to compare prices to Disney cruise-line though.

We are the same demographic and sailed the Edge (same class as Beyond) and had a great time. Food was better and a lot more options, rooms are very nice and the shower alone makes it better than DCL's bathrooms. The ship was beautiful and and a completely different experience than DCL. DCL's entertainment is better. Otherwise, we'd sail Celebrity over DCL any day and we love DCL.

Sailed on the Magic twice and never found crowding or children to be an issue. It may have been down to a slightly different demographic as they were both European cruises.

We never really go to the big shows - we are mostly sit in a lounge, have wine and listen to music, sit out on the deck, etc. type people. The ship looks so beautiful and I think has many places to just hang out, drink wine and just enjoy the ocean!

I am new to this forum. I have been looking for additional forums besides the one that I usually am on. I wanted to say that I agree with everything that ChuckElias says. I have been on 14 Disney Cruises with a May Cruise on the Dream and a November cruise on the Wish scheduled for 2022. I constantly hear from my BIL how wonderful the cruise line he goes on is but we cannot bring ourselves to try them. I feel that most of the other cruises can't compete with some of the amenities on the Disney Cruise (my opinion only). I enjoy not having to make a reservation to see a show or the fact that there is very limited specialty dining with an up-charge. Like has been said previously the up-charges may not be enough to compensate for the difference in price but I think what needs to be remembered and I don't think has been mentioned is the fact that Disney Cruise Line does not have gambling on board other than Bingo. Gambling one the other lines is like liquor in that it is a way to subsidize the cruise and keep the price lower. I don't gamble so I do not miss it but I do think it is one of the reasons that other cruise lines are less expensive.

You have not been on an other cruise, yet you have formed an opinion that they are not as good as a DCL cruise? Did I read that correctly?

I have never made a reservation to see a show on a Celebrity Cruise. I have made reservations for wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, tours of the kitchens, and other assorted thing, but not for a show.

I'm not sure what you are talking about when you refer to upcharge dining. There are a host of dining options on Celebrity. Many of them are free with your ticket. Some are an upcharge if you are not in Aqua class, but are you assigned dining location if you are in Aqua. There are a few that are a nominal upcharge ($20 - $25 or so). This is pretty much exactly how DCL works (except they do not have a special dining room like the Aqua class cabins do)

Gambling does help defray the costs, but then so does all the other stuff that cruises do, that DCL does have - photo packages, shopping, art auctions, etc. DCL has loads of that. The difference in cost is not due to a casino not being on board.

I am not going to get into a tit for tat regarding what is or is not on another cruise. If that is what happens I am done! You do not need to go on the other cruises to know what they are about. I am primarily speaking from my own research on these other cruise lines and talking to others who have been on these cruise lines to know what they are about. You are very presumptuous to know what I know or don't know. I have researched enough to know what is different without going open those cruises. You don't have to believe that. That is your opinion as I previously mentioned what I wrote is my opinion. I know on at least one cruise line you need tickets to see each show. Does that mean that if it is not crowded you can't walk in? No but I have never needed a ticket to reserve a seat to watch. show on a Disney Cruise. On at least one cruise if you select a certain type of main dining that allows you to be flexible you may not get to eat at the time you want unless you make a reservation in advance. When you walk up to the dining room you may have to wait in a long line. There is a much larger list of specialty dining and eating places that have uncharges, nominal uncharges included than on a Disney Cruise. How do you know that having a casino on board is not a huge profit center for the cruise line that helps keep their costs down? Are you in finance? Did you work in a casino? I am in finance and I did work in a casino and I know how they operate. If you want to reply to this again go right ahead. I will not be replying again or replying on this board. I am done. I expressed my opinion which is based on facts and I get flamed. No thanks. Not needed.

Dave has consistently stated his opinion that Celebrity is the better choice for folks who don't need the Disney touches to impress kids. I've never been on Celebrity. (I should probably consider this a professional failing!) But I'm willing to take his word for this, as he's done both cruise lines multiple times.

In my post that was quoted by @DWG , I said that

I should have added that it's possible that there are a FEW that may be better for less money. Celebrity may very well be one of those. Totally coincidentally, just this morning (before I came back to this thread), I mentioned to my wife that our next non-DCL cruise should be Celebrity out of NJ. That's the closest ship to us (I live in New England), and we've never done it. So that may be up next after our April B2B on the Dream.

(But even before our Dream cruise, I'm REALLY looking forward to the Royal Clipper out of Barbados in 3 weeks!!!)

You do not need to reply. But if you would like to consider a conversation ....

I never flamed you, I never disparaged anything about you. All I did is ask for clarification about the fact that you have never been on a different cruise line. You can do all of the research you want, but first hand knowledge is still preferable.

Nowhere did I presume to know anything about what you do or do not know, I asked for clarification about your first hand experiences.

I can tell you from my experience that there is a cruise line that does everything I said (no lines at dining, no tickets at shows, etc.)

While I have not worked in finance I do know enough about it to be savvy (when you work in engineering project management, business cases, ROI, churn, top line growth, COGS, CAPEX, OPEX, Plan View, Commitment View, etc. are your bread and butter). You do have a leg up on me when it comes to casino operations. I admit, my sole understanding of it is my observations on a ship that has one. Aside from the hard core slots players, there was very little action in the casino during daylight hours - yet it was still staffed. Evening hours had more people in the Casino, but it was not packed. From looking around, I noticed the majority of people came in, changed $100 / $200 and then left when done. I really did not see any long term whales there. Even if every person on the ship dropped $200 in the casino, and assuming 100% profit (which we know is not the case) the difference in price between Celebrity and DCL is more than $200 pp. So we can pretty much assume that the lack of a casino is not the only thing that is making DCL cost more.

Thank you. I was a bit taken aback. I like to think I am one of the pleasant people around here. I will have a discussion about things, but I don't think I resort to flaming people, name called, or presuming to know what people think.

As for DCL's kids care, I would not even say it is just to impress kids. I think DCL goes head and shoulders above others for a family experience. The kids have fun, the parents have a sense of safety, the kids staff is top notch, and there are plenty of family type activities where parents and kids can participate together. Celebrity makes an effort, but comes no where close to DCL.

I'll be on Celebrity out of Bayonne to Bermuda in July this summer. Hopefully. This is the third time I am trying to take that cruise - thanks COVID. I have since been upgraded to Aqua, received on board credits, and extra perks because they keep canceling cruises on me. They have recently changed that itinerary. It used to be 3 days in Bermuda with the rest at sea. Now they took a sea day and made it a day in Newport RI. I am from NJ, so going to Newport is no great thrill for me (as I suspect the same for you), but I guess for people not from the area it is a nice way to see a New England port (Bayonne is NOT New England :) )
