Very cool! I volunteer for a lot of events (just spent the weekend helping out at the triathlon) and I really enjoy the interaction with participants (which is probably what keeps me coming back each year). For an event like the triathlon, I’ll usually sign up for several different shifts, since I don’t participate as an athlete. With other events, I usually volunteer on at least one of the days I am not running.

Congrats. Like @Swissmiss, I have experience in working large sports events, including front gates, information, organization and management at events with up to 500,000 people over several days, and it can be an amazing amount of fun. Talking to and helping participants, attendees, kids, and other staff, can just be a blast. I can remember one race where the first finisher (from Ethiopia) just came FLYING through the tape, going faster than the motor escorts, and it was a fabulous sight. And working the VIP lines at tennis tournaments was an entirely different experience, like getting a picture with Serena and Venus at warm-ups. Sometimes just getting people headed the right way toward the exit was fun; peewee football and soccer coaching experience helped there ("your other left"). Don't hide your running knowledge; it's a great way to make people feel welcome. Just keep a smile and a Disney attitude and you should have a great time.

Had my 1st day of runDisney training yesterday and got to meet my co-workers. I will be race day staff and most likely be in the staging areas on race mornings and possibly finish-line too. I could be doing just about anything but it sounds like I'll be telling y'all where to go :)

One important note: They are no longer using the term "Corrals" they're all "starting groups" now.

Still no word on "Springtime Surprise" - I asked, was told they're not ready to reveal it yet

  • runDisney will be utilizing Start Groups to follow health and safety guidelines and manage the flow of participants from the staging area to the start of the race. Your start group designation is a small “s” followed by a number (such as s1, s2, s3, s4) and is located in the upper corner of your bib.
So if "start groups" are the same as "Corrals", how does this manage the flow of participants from the staging area to the start of race? Will each Start group be called to the starting area at a different time? Or is it just starting area just bigger than years past to allow spacial distancing between runners?

Sorry for so many questions, maybe I'm over thinking this

My understanding it that instead of the usual mass exodus to your corrals, the groups will be leaving separately to go the the start, to allow a little more spacing.

I honestly don't know what it's going to look like. There are fewer start group areas vs corrals for the 10k and half. 4 "start groups" vs corrals A-G (or more). All I ask is for people to pack their patience & understanding ESPECIALLY for wine/dine weekend
