FBI Declares War on The Scooter Store

Approximately 150 federal and state law enforcement agents launched a massive raid on one of the biggest perpetrators of government fraud in America: The Scooter Store. Yes, that's right. The nation's largest provider of single-person electric vehicles and power chairs is the target of a federal investigation, probably because many of the people who ride around their "personal mobility devices" don't actually need them.

In January, CBS This Morning ran a cutting exposé on the company, detailing how it "railroads" doctors into prescribing the chair for their patients, most of whom are on Medicare or Medicaid. That way they can bill the government for their highly dubious medical device, while the patient gets a cool new scooter without paying for it, and The Scooter Store makes a nice profit. Doctors and former employees told CBS that the company would harass physicians with non-stop phone calls and offices drop-ins in order to wear them down. The company even has a special department devoted to getting chairs for patients who had already been ruled ineligible by Medicare. No doubt the pressure comes because their ads guarantee that the chair will be free if they can't get you qualified.

The Scooter Store is so good at getting the chairs that a government audit found that they had overbilled Medicare by over $100 million between 2009-2012. It's no wonder their ads brag that "No other company will work harder to make you mobile."

FBI agents would not provide details on any crimes or possible charges behind the search warrant, but 1,200 employees of the company were escorted from the headquarters in New Braunfels, Texas, on Wednesday, and were not allowed back into today, as investigators continue to dig for clues. Police also searched a related management company that The Scooter Store's sales records.

Unfortunately, the FBI won't be going after the handful of customers who know they don't need a scooter or wheelchair, but still want the government to buy them one. Sort of like the people at airports who experience "wheelchair miracles" leaping up and running to their gate after an airport employee has helpfully pushed them most of the way. Officials at Los Angeles International Airport estimate that 15 percent of the people who request wheelchair assistance are faking it, because they want to skip lines and get on board their flights faster. We're sure most Scooter Store customers are unhealthy people, innocently going along with the company's promises of getting out of the house more, but the disability fakers are the real criminals if you ask us.

When I was at WDW in December, I saw something new involving scooters.
One was pulling a small trailer thru the park with other members of the party riding.
The other had a motorcycle type sit with a person riding on the back. I just gritted my teeth!!!!

THANK GOD. Nice to see the federal government pushing its weight and responsibly handling fraudulent business practices when it needs to.

I understand leg / knee injury /surgery would require a scooter but the overweight people who ride them around because it's just too much for them to walk drives me crazy. Oh and the elderly riding them is fine, can't blame them for wanting to see Disney even if they can't walk as much anymore.

I saw this on my most recent visit to Disneyland. The lady who made a scene about how she was disabled and had to be on the plane first had no problem jumping up and getting out of the plane when she was told to wait patiently and she would be assisted off.

Assigned lanes with traffic signs and tickets for violators or speed bumps maybe the only way to try to get a handle on what has become a public menace. People who truly need the scooters should be able to do so without having to dodge the fakers and the public should not have to suffer the collisions that happen all to often from inexperienced and impatient users.

I think there are definitely medical reason one is needed. Obesity is not a reason. There is a chance I may have to have one due to my accident and I am absolutely hating the idea. I will not order one until I am there and see how Day 1 goes. I think anyone on them should be required to carry Liability insurance and tickets for moving vehicle violations.

I don't think this will make ANY difference on the number of scooters you see at WDW, or anywhere in Florida -- they will happily buy them if they can't get them financed....most of them are rentals there anyway and have nothing to do with this story which is about fraudulent insurance billing.
For the record, as a medical professional who works with rehab clients, I don't expect ANY kind of decrease in prescription of scooters and other mobility devices as our society gets heavier, lazier, and our increasing age-of-entitlement continues.
Its not specifically a WDW problem. Its a Florida problem.

Agreed, no relation between this story and WDW.

I keep trying to get my dad to get one of these. His balance is an issue and one of these days he will break a hip if he doesn't do something. Especially in public places where others might bump into him, I want him to use one.

He keeps saying he's a Weeble. (Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.) Sadly, he is not a Weeble. He's a stubborn old goat!

Anyway, using them is a big pain in the neck and I don't think anyone who didn't actually need one would use one. Walking is MUCH easier and a hell of a lot faster.

I hope they continue to make them available to anyone who wants one.

Actually, it is NOT true that there are more scooters at WDW than anywhere else -- just go a few miles out of the world to any of the malls, any of the discount outlet centers, any chain restaurant, etc...Better yet -- go to a place in Florida that caters more to senior citizens than Orlando and your jaw will drop at the number of scooters...its like primary transportation in some neighborhoods.

LOL, I have several retired neighbors, as I'm sure most Floridians do. :) Some of them zip down the sidewalks to visit each other on those. It's so wonderful that people have these instead of wheelchairs, which would be hard for some old widowed women to use. One of them actually goes for her "walk" on her scooter every day.

They lament the fact that the sidewalk doesn't go all the way to Publix! I know that if it did, I'd be asked to pick up coffee (or whatever) less frequently than I am now. :)
