Im leaving in three days for a wicked needed vaca!!! The night of our first full day we have reservations at the Cali Grill during the fireworks. I've been saving $$ like crazy so for once I'm not worried about the Bill:) The question is what is a great tasting wine that my fiance and I would enjoy with our Sushi. I'm a boston boy and she's a NY gal who drinks beer, more beer and nothing else, so we're wicked lost. Everyone says that a good wine makes the sushi that much better. Help us! This is kind of a boring thread, I know, I'm sorry. Any help would be appreciated:animwink:

The Web site Starchefs.com points out that "the notion of marrying wines with sushi is new."

StarChefs.com goes on to say that some red wines, like Pinot Noir is suited for fish. Also good pairings: Chardonnay, Cabernet, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, sparkling wines, and even extra dry or brut champagne. Yes, champagne!

Stay away from: heavy, oaky California Chardonnays and big, tannic reds.

And since your fiance' is from NYC, she should recognize some of these restaurants StarChefs.com highlight.

But get this, StarChefs.com points out that "there is no question that beer and sake (especially the new chilled sakes) are ideal choices for sushi." So since you are both beer drinkers and want to stick with beer, go ahead.

But if you want to try some wine, ask Disney if they carry Rosemount, Sémillon-Chardonnay (Southeast Australia), Mirassou, Monterey Pinot Noir (California), or McDowell Valley, Mendocino Grenache Rosé (California). All are mentioned with tasting Hamachi Sushi, Big Eye Tuna Sushi, and Big Eye Tuna Sushi.

Finally, check out this WineLoversPage.com section on pairing wines with sushi. A very nice and comprehensive break-down of what wines go good with what kind of sushi.

But, as for me, I never have had sushi and I might never try it after listening intently to Fletcher Hodges, club curator of the recently-closed Adventurers Club at Pleasure Island, exclaimed what happened on an expedition he partook over to the Far East.

We went to Cali Grill for our anniv, and sat in the wine room. There is a server there, I can't remember his name for the life of me, but owns his own wine "consulting" company, for lack of a better term. He was running around pairing wine and food for everytable around us, even if it wasn't his table! hahaha

I would say all the servers there are very well trained in pairing wines with food.

Ask. My wife and I are by no means experts but they have always been very good with suggestions - don't be afraid to ask to taste several (although probably can't do this with the $200 bottles!)

Gewürztraminer

This is the first one I thought of when I read the original post.

I like "heavier" sushi - yellowfin, toro, and mackerel - yes mackerel, in all its glorious oilyness.

Gewurztraminer is a white, slighty spicy wine. I like it for Thanksgiving. It goes great with Turkey and the little bit of spice cuts through the gravy, cream sauces, hollindase, and all that other heavy stuff.

OF course the first step is to see what is on the wine list - which changes all the time. The good news is, the Cali Grill is knowing for having a VERY well educated wine staff.

I'm sorry, I can't offer much advice on wine since all I drink really is Pinot Grigio (and not the expensive kind either ) however I just had to post and tell you that I got a kick out of the "wicked" in your posting. I'm from Mass too...I say wicked all the time and since I am from the Western part of the state I tend to get picked on.

If you like beer, than order a beer. I personally like a pale ale with my sushi. Beer is my number one drink as well. My personal choice is a local Atlanta brew called Sweetwater 420.

I found this forum post about pairing beer and sushi:

A good server will be able to help you pair wine with your meal. An excellent server will help you with beer selections as well.

The servers at CG are very knowledgeable and most helpful in choosing wines. Ask if Ron Saylor is available when you check in for your seating... He's the best.

I agree order a beer...you're from Boston, where the BEST beer is made ...Sam Adams:slurp:. On the other hand...
When we were at V&A, I added the wine pairings, and it truly was amazing and well worth the $$$$. I think they even give recommendations on the menu w/ the food items:shrug:
