I just read this about tourist traps...makes no sense.

I been to EPCOT and Epcot, 100s of times and see nothing wrong with the point of view of the article.
Yes I agree when EPCOT was dumbed down to make Epcot it was a mistake, but I still find parts of Epcot educational. Yes World Showcase is for people too lazy to travel, the sad part is many people go to Canada, France, China etc.... and think they actually know something about those countries.

I just saw an article on MSN about the worst tourist traps in the country, and for some reason, Epcot was one of them. This is the paragraph about it:

"When it comes to Walt Disney World, the Epcot Center is where dads go to find refuge from Magic Kingdom, the constant rides and cartoon characters for some good old fashioned learning just outside of Orlando. Who wants to learn when they can stuff their faces with deep fried funnel cakes and **** themselves seeing a Jack Sparrow impersonator? Epcot looks majestic from a distance, twice the size of Magic Kingdom, but up close it's really just Florida's largest golf ball. With two divisions, Future World for futuristic technology and World Showcase for people who are too lazy to travel to the actual destinations, Epcot Center is a tourist spot everyone is likely to visit, but if you go more than once, consider yourself trapped, and in Florida no less."

This makes me think the person who wrote this has never been there, or even done any research. It is basically all of the completely wrong misconceptions about not just Epcot, but Disney World in general. This leaves me with no sense of credibility for the rest of this article.

Just a hater that needed to write something that may get attention. Ignore

Just as an observation, it seems to me that 99% of the time, Disney World fans like to condemn the Flroida parks, EPCOT and MGM especially for being badly-maintained, thematically-compromised shells of their former selves with few worthwhile attractions left. Anyone who steps in to defend these parks is instantly decried as a paid shill or a delusional "pixie duster". However, the instant someone from outside the fan community makes a similar criticism, everyone rushes to attack them for not knowing what they're talking about.

I think the problem is the person who wrote about EPCOT that is being referenced does not really support their claims. Whereas I could say Innoventions is horribly outdated, but can be saved if they possibly get some big companies to use that space as a giant showroom of sorts (kind of like how GM does with Test Track). That way, they could ensure the latest or at least current technology is being showcased. Yes, it's like advertising, but that's how you'll get the latest tech and they can show off prototypes and ideas (like concept cars at a car show).

Also, the quote is a bit sexist as well. I'm usually not one to point this sort of stuff out, but if we're critiquing what was written, then are we to assume all dads and by association, all males that are not kids do not like Magic Kingdom? I'm sorry, but that is most definitely not true.

Basically, criticism is fine, that is what should drive change and improvement, but poorly written criticism just comes off as immature.

I'd just put it down to the source MSN isn't what I would call a good source for anything factual as much as it is infotainment.

While the comment is simplistic, you can't deny that Epcot at its current stat is nothing more that Soarin' and Test Track as well as the countries in terms of key rides and key attractions. Same goes for DHS but there you don't have the countries to spend your time at.

Nope... this is the writing style we get to look forward too as professionalism and journalism dies in the onslaught of buzzfeed and other 'you won't believe what they did next' clickbait of the social media phase of the internet.

This is our future... :/

Just...no.

Epcot obviously needs to have some work done. But this person apparently has enough money that he can travel to any country he wants at the drop of a hat. While a WDW vacation is expensive, it's a lot cheaper than visiting all 11 WS countries, and you still get to experience a variety of food and culture.

I don't know that I'd go quite that far. Quite a few people still go to Epcot to ride Spaceship Earth. And The Seas with Nemo and Friends and Turtle Talk with Crush are major attractions for families with children. I know there are many people who enjoy Living with the Land as well. I'm not saying you're wrong in the overall assessment that Epcot needs some serious work and new attractions. But I think to say that it boils down to only two attractions in its appeal is wrong.

I absolutely can deny that. Spaceship Earth is still a favorite, I like everything about the seas, living with the land, mission space, plus everything in the world showcase. I still enjoy ellen's energy adventure. The only thing that I think ISN'T very good is the "new" imagination ride.

I hate being one of those "lazy" people that don't want to travel to France and Japan. I have these millions of dollars but can't seem to want to get off the couch. Shame on me.
Yeah, I felt super lazy at the end of a recent EPCOT visit when the pedometer app on my phone clocked me as having walked more than 9 miles.

People are entitled to there opinions even if we don't agree with it. Even on this site there are many different opinions and not every one agrees with it it doesn't make it wrong. Some times we must agree to disagree.

Actually it's very accurate. Epcot is an outdated mess. Just because it doesn't fit into your rose colored glasses view, that doesn't make it wrong. If you're looking for overpriced drinks, Epcot is for you. If you're looking to shop for things for twice the cost of those same things on Amazon, Epcot is for you. If you're looking for a good time though, stay away from Epcot. Test Track isn't even as good as it once was now that they've changed the paint. Epcot has become a complete waste, and that's unfortunate because with a little elbow grease and a budget it could be a really wonderful park again. It hasn't really seen any money poured into it since the mid 2000s...oh that's when Iger took over. Makes sense now.
