Hurricane Milton Update: VCS Announces Early Release Tuesday, School Closures Wednesday and Thursday

Volusia County Schools is continuing to closely monitor Hurricane Milton in collaboration with Volusia County Emergency Management. The storm is expected to bring winds, heavy rain and potential flooding to our area starting on Wednesday.

To allow staff and families additional time to prepare for the storm, Tuesday, Oct. 8, will be an early release day. All schools will let out one hour earlier than usual, at which time students and staff may leave. All after-school activities, except for Extended Day Enrichment Programs (EDEP), will be canceled on Tuesday. The board workshop scheduled for Tuesday afternoon will be moved to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and the board meeting will be moved to 1 p.m.

All schools and district offices will also be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10. All after-school activities, including EDEP, will be canceled Wednesday and Thursday. Information about possible changes to Friday, Oct. 11, will be communicated as soon as it is available.

Families and staff should continue to stay tuned to their emails, VCS social media, and the VCS Storm Resource Center webpage (www.vcsedu.org/community/storm-resource-center) for further updates that may impact operations.

More information will be communicated in the future about making up these instructional days.

Anyone know if tolls are still active right now? Usually in events like this, they suspend tolls, but I haven't seen anything yet.

Polk County Schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday…
This is an important update regarding Hurricane Milton. We continue to monitor the storm’s track and potential impacts on our area.

All PCPS schools and offices will be open during regular hours on Monday, October 7. However, all after-school programs and sports on Monday will be canceled or rescheduled.

PCPS schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10. At this time, no decision has been made about Friday.

Certain PCPS schools will be activated as shelters, and that information will be posted on Polk County Government’s website and social media as it becomes available.

Hillsborough, Sarasota, and Hernando Counties have issued MANDATORY evacuation orders already so far. I’d expect others to follow.
I watched the newscast. People living on the barrier islands and areas that flooded in Helene have a mandatory evacuation order. But not all people living in those counties are under that order.

The Governor stated that just crossing the bridges leading to the islands, and stopping at the nearest shelter that had room, might have saved lives.

Pinellas issued a voluntary evacuation order zones A, B, and C as well as all mobile home residents. I’d expect that to go up to a full mandatory evacuation later today or first thing tomorrow.
