Disney CFO Addresses Theme Park Pricing, Talks New Attractions Coming to Walt Disney World

CFO Hugh Johnston addressed theme park pricing and upcoming attractions at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 9, pushing back on criticism that the parks business is unpredictable. He named several confirmed projects headed to the Florida parks, including Tropical Americas and Monstropolis both targeting 2027, and framed new attractions as a direct answer to the value question around ticket prices.

DCL supply can't keep up with demand....but they've been running aggressive promotions just to fill ships?
Domestic theme park attendance went up....but the parks have been noticeably emptier to anyone with working eyeballs?

There's a disconnect here or some top notch BS being passed.
That crossed my mind as well. They have heavily discounted a lot of cruises recently which I don't remember ever seeing.

Discounts for the last few rooms doesn't mean they can't fill rooms. Disney already charges a huge mark-up. So, there's a lot of room to make deals for unsold rooms.

If you were a merchant that was able to sell almost all of your inventory, and yet, there was still some left, you'd discount it to get it out the door... at a price point in which you're still profiting.

And that's how they sell out all the rooms.

This is the same deal with Disney hotel rooms.

But you think those numbers are a scam, too. So, not surprised you're trying to sell the same conspiracy theory with regard to DCL. You think discounts are a sign of tumble weeds down Main Street.

I mean, he's the CFO, so what's he going to say?

But the line, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get," could just as easily have been, "Price is what we keep increasing, value is what we keep taking away."

Shrinkflation vacation.
I think Disney is doing more to add new value to the parks right now than they have in a very long time.

Just read back to yourself what you just wrote.

And These aren’t just the “last few rooms” they are discounting on itineraries going well into mid 2027. This has never been done before with DCL.

If you were a merchant that was able to sell almost all of your inventory, and yet, there was still some left, you'd discount it to get it out the door... at a price point in which you're still profiting.

That’s not how the Disney hotel discounts work. Their discount inventory is usually a fixed quantity and it’s set months and months prior to the promotion taking effect. They do not dynamically add inventory to promotions because of perceived softness in the response..
But you think those numbers are a scam, too. So, not surprised you're trying to sell the same conspiracy theory with regard to DCL. You think discounts are a sign of tumble weeds down Main Street.
More of your typical gaslighting. Just use the word “conspiracy theory” some more.

I just like to know from you penguin, when was the last time DCL had this expansive type of a discount promotion plan?

You have no idea what Hugh G. Johnson’s dataset is. There’s no specifics there and no frame of reference for what 3% means. And he’s under no obligation to provide all guest visitation data other than stuff that is could be cherry picked for public consumption.

Just keep gaslighting penguin, all those people who visit and notice the lack of crowds, and articles written by reputable sources, who say that Disney has an attendance problem. They’re all in on the conspiracy too. All the people that visit the park and see it significantly less crowded than it has been in decades, I bet they have their foil hats shaped like Mickey ears when they’re there as well.

This is a legitimate question - the cruises are heavily discounted?

I don’t have knowledge of historical pricing, but I thought they used to be way cheaper. Is this a matter of gradually increasing the base 10% and the discount 5%, for example?
