horizon building

Not at all! It is a truly great attraction that offers a unique experience that you can only experience at EPCOT. It is bad that Horizons was torn down to make way for it, b/c they both could've existed. However, Disney wasn't willing to write the check to save Horizons, instead they decided to tear it down. In it's place, a great attraction opened. Get mad at Disney, not M:S. :animwink:

I just think it is also too bad that Disney couldn't write the check to make M:S a truly great attraction. As I've said before it is OK at but nothing special in my opinion. I don't blame M:S for Horizons at all, that is all on Disney management.

However, I am not mad at anyone either - though I will point out that I think a bunch of good for nothin morons made the decision to raze Horizons anytime I get - boy if I could just get my hands on ...

What did I say about not being mad? :lookaroun

I like the queue, but the ending hallway is lame except for Destiny. That said, Horizons didn't offer anything after the actual ride either.

At least the walk out had cool lighting tunnels, mirrors, effects, and a mural.

I'm not denying that Horizons was better. I just feel like M:S gets an unnecessary bad rap because people loved Horizons so much.

I'm sorry, but when that amount of GIANT, AWESOME, COMPLICATED things get torn out, I think it's fair to expect a really great ride, not just a cool one.

EXACTLY!! I think people rip on it just b/c of where it was placed. Had it been placed between The Land and The Living Seas, I doubt we would have all the M:S hate that fills the web.

I dunno'...it's pretty disappointing. I mean, you can't tell me that the Space Station built on the side of an Asteroid would not have been as cool as "Mission: SPACE Race presented by HP".

If they would've built the actual Space Pavilion as was originally planned, yeah it would've been a heck of a lot better. But, that doesn't take away from the fact that M:S is extremely unique attraction that I personally love. I can't help but have a smile on my face when I ride. I can't say the same about every time I rode Horizons.

That is my biggest complaint about what happened with M:S. I think something that could have been truly amazing was watered down a bit too much.

Those were... interesting at times... to say the least!

In reality though, I just miss my favorite attraction from the days when our family first started going to the world. I really am getting close to being able to accept it though... at least that's what my therapist said!!!

M:S vs Horizons.

Duration M:S about 5 minutes?
M:S Attraction older people, people with motion sickness avoid.
Queue is stop and go, wait for the simulator, 20 minute wait you stand in one place for 20 minutes.
Learned about ?? Not much really. If people go to Mars "China?" doubt you learn anything about the trip.

Duration Horizons about 20 minutes?
Horizons Attraction for all.
Queue continued to move, the cars were on a continuous loop. 20 minute wait you kept moving.
Learned about the future from the past, present and future. Maybe off big time but at least there was much more content.

Pick the better value, ok I miss Horizons but I may as well get over it. Horizons is gone.

Reality of the situation: Guest counts on Horizons were in the toilet. Guests were screaming for more thrill rides. Disney gave the people what they wanted.

Yes but you are forgetting the #1 Epcot Fan Boy Rule:

"Epcot was perfect the first time I went. After that it went down hill."

Just keep repeating that.

I know the rule...I just don't subscribe to it. I miss Horizons and much as the average Epcot Fanboy but I am grounded in the reality that Disney is a business.

As of recently, Body Wars is mostly intact hardware-wise but inoperable. Same for CC. It wouldn`t cost a lot of time nor money to reinstate them if they wanted to. Which they don't.
BW is way out dated and im not sad it is gone. Great and innovative when it came out, but i think kids home entertainment video gaming console push more thrills and technology then BW and ST

CC from what i recall would still be a good show. I really liked it.

Yep. TT for example.

Well said. I wouldnt want an attraction to stick around just for the nastalgia argument (the show building of H). I think where a lot of us, and you might agree Richard, is what M:S could have been.

Now, im not saying going and demo'ing all out dated buildings due to show, H building was unigue in a bad way of transformation. Same with WoL pavilion. Im all for something new inside, but dont make the show suffer by trying to save the building, if you need to bulldoze it.

Concepts are always better than reality, That is why I stay away from concept art. You always wind up disapointed.

The simple problem with the Horizons show building is that M:S simply would not fit into it. I have seen people do overlays of the current M:S building and Horizons building and cry "There the same size! Disney just wanted to tear the building down for a tax write off!", "There was a sink hole swallowing the building!" or any number of other insane conspiracy laden statements about the building. But the forget that the outer 20' +/- of the building bordered on useless due to the cantilevered design. It is a shame but the building had to go. But it is not like they replaced it with some plain box. M:S has one of the most impressive entrances in all of WDW. Sure it is all window dressing but none the less it is quite attractive and very EPCOT like.

Yeah, but every time I've been to Epcot and gone past M:S (besides when it first opened) the wait time is no longer than 15 minutes. Maybe it was too much of a thrill, hence the addition of the lower-intensity choice. Doesn't seem like a hit to me unless I'm missing something

I guess I'm ticked because I never got to go on Horizons and I feel like I missed all the fun!

Unfortunately none of us have the numbers that would prove failure or flop and put and end to this argument. All I can relate is personal experience. I went on Horizons during Thanksgiving weekend probably around a year before it closed in 1994 and the place was a ghost town. If it was like that on a holiday weekend I can only imagine what it was like on normal day in October.

I have always liked the entrance to M:S.

I thought that the show building of Horizons was such a landmark or symbol of Epcot's image. It was an important building/structure for more then just hosting an great attraction.

The one thing that i have heard someone state/argue with that statement, is that M:S used a whole new queue system that really pushed quest through. No, i havent waited more then 15 minutes, but is that due to how well the new queue is designed?

For the record, i think it was Martin in a thread a long time ago that stated that, but im not quoting him, just going off memory

There is no question that Horizon's was a unique building but to the casual Disney guest it was just another building. I think that the only buildings truly safe from the wrecking ball at WDW in the minds of TDO are the ToL, the Castle and SSE. Every other building is fare game if a sponsor shows up with an open check book like they did with M:S.

By the same rationale, The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean should have been closed years ago and replaced with thrill rides. Horizons just needed to be updated and marketed, as those two classics at The Magic Kingdom were. If people were truly "screaming" for more thrill rides (which beyond just being used to sound more dramatic, I suspect screaming is a bit of an exaggeration), there's plenty of room around Future World that they could have added Mission: SPACE.
