Rumor Hollywood insiders say there's growing tension at Disney as CEO Bob Chapek chafes at Bob Iger's 'long goodbye'

The only reason why they did that was because all the other large studios had already done it.

They didn't do it be a in a pioneering position, they did it because they didn't want to be left behind in possibly loosing talent to their competitors.

They may well have been late to the party amongst entertainment companies but not so for corporations at large as only a very small percentage offered those kind of benefits at the time. Heck, by 2010, 15 years later, less than a third of companies offered same sex benefits.

Either way, they started down this path a long time ago and had kept it up through Iger at least. Now, who really knows. We will all likely end up with whiplash watching current Bob flail around trying to stay on top of things (and if not from that, Space Mountain will finish the job).

Honestly, I wonder how he manages to put his pants on without falling down.

Didn't mean he had to pick Chapek. Kevin Meyer was an option, and would have been far more suitable for the role IMO (albeit far from perfect).
Kevin Mayer would have been uniquely ill-suited to be the CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

While Chapek doesn't come off as the most personable guy in the world, Mayer comes off as downright evil.

That's not entirely true -- there's a reason most of the major conservative religious organizations started a boycott against Disney in the mid 1990s.

To be fair, I think it was more that Disney wasn't actively opposing/shutting down LGBTQ activities around the parks, but still.
Bingo…they dispensed with the backwards/medieval stuff long before others.

It was always a “haven” when things weren’t so accepted. CMs who were lgbtq were I’d say 5 times the street rate (conservative) and that was 20-25 years ago. It was a “place of comfort” when many still offered little to no comfort.

Florida. Orlando. Lake buena vista. 32830

I truly wonder what people saw when they were dusted on their vacations.

It was a source of “pride”…for everyone. Pun/no pun intended.

Disney wasn’t an art house studio since the 80’s.

Considering their prime market has been mom, dad, 2 cars, 2 kids, a dog, a cat and a white picket fence…forever…their stance on equality is one of their most respectable characteristics.

And remember who’s complimenting Disney here

Disney can’t afford to build a new resort on their own.

In Disney's fiscal 2019, theme parks raked in $26 billion in revenue and $6.7 billion in operating income

On the surface (I say surface, purposefully ignoring the pandemic, shut-down issues, and dumb re-skins they have planned), they could've afforded a new location. This is something that should've been done years ago.

Also, it doesn't need to be another WDW. They could start with 1 or 2 parks, partner up with some hotels, and get to work. I'd also like to add, while Disney thinks everyone wants another ROTR or Smuggler's Run, we all love cheaper Fantasyland attractions too.

They have ZERO reason to do that. It’s not gonna happen. It would be higher guaranteed costs and diminishing ROI

Affordability isn’t just a question of cash but also return on investment. Disney is inefficient and can’t justify needed development in their existing properties. A new resort would easily be a $10 billion project that would still would not feature a full day park.

I'm curious - who would you see as a good CEO at this point?
Off the top of my head…

I’m a fan of “partnerships” or near “co-equals”. I could live with Peter Rice…I guess…but with someone more creative/younger as a Lt….maybe Scott Stuber?

Pixar as is…less corporate dictation on projects. You won’t have any more WallEs or Finding Nemos if people aren’t allowed to search for them.

Marvel is fine. Don’t mess with the Feige

Ronald D Moore…for gods sake…to take over LFL. Have a bean counter count the beans if you have to…not pick what should and shouldn’t be made.

End this stupidity of this “consolidated products” crap. Junk is junk and destinations aren’t not.
Put WDI and Parks, Resorts Destinations together…
Don’t know who but you need a creative and someone who can analyze cost/benefit analysis there.

Man, you know you are getting old when you remember the same posts on the same board about Eisner...and then Iger...and now Chapek.

I'm sure just mentioning that will send people into little essay-writing fits about how "it's different this time", but no, it's not - the context may change, but the bottom line is - you don't get to be CEO of a major corporation without acting like...a CEO of a corporation. Disney ceased being any semblance of a "family business" a half-century ago, and no matter who they bring in, everyone is going to hate them.
I’ve been vocal in the past about supporting Iger. Sure he neglected building rides at WDW for a while but he was creating a massive entertainment goliath (for better or worse, but still imho- it made TWDC unassailable) and got around to getting WDW moving forward before COVID and his abrupt handoff.

The hope would be that Chapek could be better than we expected; my impression is that the reality is worse than I could have feared.

I haven’t been back to the parks since they eliminated magical express and created the genie plus monster. I honestly don’t have much interest in doing so. Fortunately my impression is that whomever takes over from Chapek 11 months from now will have the opportunity to correct much and look like a hero, but I can’t imagine they renew his contract when it’s up next year
