A former Hong Kong Disneyland employee scaled the roof of the theme park's Space Mountain attraction Tuesday to protest his dismissal.
The 48-year-old protester, identified as Gavin Quertin, worked as a plainclothes security guard at the Tomorrowland section of the park.
A Chinese-language newspaper reported that Quertin claimed he was dismissed on October 3 following arguments with co-workers.
Quertin, wearing a white T-shirt with the words "Blood for help," used a back-stage ladder to climb to the roof of Space Mountain, an indoor roller coaster in Tomorrowland, in the afternoon. He waved a protest banner that read "SOS help" and held a knife to his neck in protest.
A police negotiator convinced him to come down after two hours and took him away for questioning. No charges were laid against him.
Lee Cheuk-yan, a labor sector representative in the Legislative Council, said the issue reflects communication problems between Disney and its staff. Lee said he will discuss concerns with Disney staff when they form a union.
Disneyland spokeswoman Esther Wong said the theme park's management will further investigate the matter.
- I saw this on the TV news. Lots of guys up there with him trying to coax him down. Fire trucks and officials all over. Report was in Cantonese. I mean, I knew HKDL was going to have some unique entertainment!
