Before reading please note that the topic ended up as another topic of being "harry potter good or bad for disney" when it was really supposed to be "theming a whole section of a land to one movie is bad"

I started the topic right but it ended up sounding VERY similar to that other thread my bad..

I meant to come across that theming a whole entire land based on one movie is bad. I got caught up in my post I guess [: haha

Ok, so I'm reeally slow with Universal's news.. but we know that Uni. fans are getting mad at them for closing classics.. King Kon, Earthquake, Ghostbusters, ect. And I just found out that Universal closed JAWS back in January?? I think they lost their minds! Could they have gotten any more stupid? And to replace it with.. what? MORE HARRY POTTER? If I'm not mistaken they're replacing it so they can connect Harry Potter so both parks can meet right? Dumbest idea ever! Remember when Lord of the Rings was so popular? Well nobody talks about that anymore. I think that's going to be the same for Harry. I think it's not going to bring money in after.. let's say 3 years? Even if they do expand it more. JAWS was also one of those main attractions that make you want to go to Universal..

It's just my opinion but I think that the little land they made for Harry Potter was okay for them. But an entire "world" is not going to work. Not too many people will be Harry Potter junkies in a couple of years. You don't have many now as it is. Nobody wants to go to a park that has too much of one movie they don't care for.

I think that's another reason why Disney would win.. despite some teens and other people who think "disney movies are lame", they still have more variety in their parks. I mean, the Fantasyland expansion has more than one movie in it. I'll be honest, I LOOOOVED JAWS. And it was still a major attraction before it closed. Always usually over a 90 minute wait when I'm there! It's just.. dumb of them.

So I'm definately routing for Disney to win with their expansions... with all that being said, I hope Avatarland won't be as big as they say it will..

Harry Potter's popularity will ebb and flow, but it will always have great fans. The movies are good, and the books are fantastic. Disney, perhaps, was right in NOT promising an entire park/land to Rowling, and such amazing control to an outsider was a terrible precedent to set.

Potter is riding the crest of its popularity wave right now. Maybe it'll keep going. Maybe not. With the final movie being done, and no new movies or HP books in the pipeline, this may be as good as it gets. Disney probably thought so, and that is why they didn't abide Rowling's tremendous demands. Like so many things, 3 years is probably the defining point. Will it keep bringing in the crowds three years from opening, or not? We have, what, about 15 months to see.

You have to understand that to older people who grew up with these attractions, it's the end of the world for one of these attractions (Jaws, Horizons, etc.) to be closed down. But to those of us who did not grow up with these attractions, it's just another old, outdated attraction biting the dust. Try to imagine some of these attractions without the nostalgic value. They're not nearly as exciting. I'm glad Jaws is getting closed down, it sucked.

Arguing the value of Harry Potter isn't worth my time. Clearly if fanboys don't see the worth at this point they never will. So their loss.

Earthquake is still open, it just has a better show and a louder name.

Also, this thread is more than pointless, so I get to post my favorite gif ever!

out of interest, what were her demands?

While I am saddened by the closure of Jaws as it was one of my favorite rides, to say that it is a stupid move to expand Harry Potter is ridiculous and shows that the OP has no understanding of the impact that attraction has had not only on Universal but WDW as well.

I don't know if it's had much impact on WDW as of yet. Attendance wise, it hasn't. People may be taking 1 day out of their WDW trips to see WWOHP, but there isn't nearly enough there to justify more than that, if a side trip to Universal wasn't planned already.

I happen to agree on one thing - Putting Harry Potter into Universal Studios would be a mistake. There is more than enough room to expand at IOA (Lost Continent). You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. Sure, Harry Potter is popular, but if you throw it everywhere, you're bound to get backlash and overkill from people who aren't die hard fans or those who simply don't care.

The biggest difference I see between Universal and Disney is that when Universal retires an attraction, they always seem to replace it with something good. Disney on the other hand, often retires attractions and replaces it with nothing, or with something that is inferior to it's predecessor.

In 20 years when they go to replace potter or attractions like rockin roller coaster and you are complaining, hopefully I can dig up this post.....or actually be alive to dig up this post....to remind you that it's not that big a deal.
