Great Movie Ride scene replacement?

I'd love to see Star Wars replace Alien.

Last week I was on GMR and the CM said his spiel at the beginning including "Great films" and a little boy behind me goes "Well if this ride has the best movies it better have Star Wars!"

Then at the end when they say "Here are a few of my favorites..." he goes "LIKE STAR WARS" and then after the Star Wars scenes he says "they saved the best for last!"

I'd also like to see Footlight parade replaced with another music (Chicago?)

And I agree with the masses to see Godfather scenes instead of the current Gangster scene.

I'm sure movie rights plays into a lot of the possibilities for this ride - but we know now that there are absolutely no problems in having Star Wars in there!

What if you did both? You could actually come into the Chocolate Room scene on the chocolate river and then exit through the tunnel scene. It goes pitch black and then the lights turn on (just like the movie) and you're in front of the Indiana Jones scene.

This would appear to remove Alien. I'm okay with removing Alien under the right context (i.e. a complete gutting of the ride in which the standards for "great" are really, really great). Alien is not only a great movie, but it is the only representation of sci-fi and the only real horror movie in the ride. Musicals are pretty well covered by the ride as it is, and I don't think Willy Wonka is great enough to take over Alien.

If done right, I'd love to see a scene depicting Toontown from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" to replace Tarzan. That way we'll finally receive that Roger Rabbit presence we all yearn for in the park. Guests will enter that scene by going through the Toontown tunnel, where they'll find Eddie Valiant and Roger aboard Benny the Cab.

It will also give Disney a perfect reason to feature some of their characters who don't currently have attractions. (Big Bad Wolf and the 3 Little Pigs, Pinocchio with Honest John and Gideon, Mr. Toad, the DuckTales crew, Kuzco in llama form with Pacha, the Reluctant Dragon, and others).

I had already mentioned "An Affair To Remember" replacing Tarzan, so there's no need to repeat on that anymore. Here are a few other things I'd do:

First, the opening "Footlight Parade" scene is replaced by something else, although I have no idea what it could be. And then the "Fantasia" scene is replaced by the James Bond scene I was proposing, which would be
"Goldfinger". It's the scene where Goldfinger has Bond tied down in the path of a laser. Bond says, "Do you expect me to talk?" To which Goldfinger responds, "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die."

And that's basically it. I would have loved to do more with this ride, but I'm trying to take physical space into account. What did you think?

I would just make Tarzan look more like the animated movie and and replace the mummies with the night of the living dead considering the recent zombie craze.

I love GMR, but agree that it needs an update. Regarding how old movies need to be to be included, though, we must remember that Raiders of the Lost Ark and Alien weren't exactly "old" movies when the attraction was built. In fact, Raiders was only eight years old, I believe, when the attraction opened, so that would be like GMR opening today with a scene from 2006.

+1 on updating the movie montage shown in the queuing area and at the end of the ride. A new HD projection system and added movies would be a great improvement (and somewhat inexpensive). A new projection system for the Sorcerer’s Apprentice scene would likely be a good idea as well.

IMO, other than maybe Tarzan, I think this ride does a good job of representing movies that have, and will stand the test of time (which is really what it’s all about). :)

In addition to my Forrest Gump idea, here's another option: just add appropriate film characters into the bigger scenes-add another AA after Public Enemy, another cowboy in the Western scene, etc. Problem is, nothing newer has REALLY made an impact in these genres lately.

I'd hate to see Tarzan go, as its visually exceptional, but you might be able to do the same-make it a "generic jungle" where several famous characters are located.

You could maybe truncate the Alien tunnel to a smaller size if you needed to (the first turn of it, right after the Western), but it would kill a lot of the suspense. It would be very easy to add a C3PO/R2D2 to, and BAM! It's a Death Star corridor.

Goonies???

Haha- for real though, it does amaze me that there is no Great Movie Ride (Animated) equivalent. It seems like a no brainer to take the guests through the companies hits and allow them the opportunity to show off some of their lesser seen hits: 101 Dalmatians, Oliver and Co, Robin Hood, Jungle Book, Emperor's New Groove, The Great Mouse Detective, etc. And a journey from Oswald to Mickey to Snow White to Little Mermaid to Toy Story- talk about a story arc!

Steamboat Willie
Mary Poppins
Singin' in the Rain
Gangster Scene (Roger Rabbit, The Public Enemy, The Godfather)
Cowboy Scene (Ethan Edwards, Man With No Name, Woody's Roundup - possibly)
Star Wars
Indiana Jones
The Jungle Book (in place of Tarzan)
Muppets (spoofing Casablanca as a tribute to the old Great Muppet Movie Ride idea)
Fantasia
The Wizard of Oz

Although I'd love to see Universal make one of their own

  1. Classic: The Jazz Singer, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting
  2. Horror: Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Wolf Man, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Abbott and Costello, Psycho, The Birds, Halloween, Chucky, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th (you could probably make a horror themed one all on its own)
  3. Disaster: Earthquake, Jaws, Backdraft
  4. Comedy: Animal House, Smokey and the Bandit, Blues Brothers, Ted, Bruce Almighty
  5. 80s Adventure: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Back to the Future, The Goonies, Beetlejuice
  6. Action: Apollo 13, The Bourne Ultimatum, Waterworld
  7. Musical: Les Miserables, 8 Mile, Wicked
  8. Family/Inspirational: Babe, Field of Dreams
  9. Finale - AA/screens mix for a montage
