I was just watching the Travel Channel and they had an hour-long special on WDW (one of many actually). At the end of the program they asked the question "What's next for Disney World?" A Disney official stated that "..although we can not give away any secrets just yet, there is plenty of room on the Walt Disney World property for us to build and we have many exciting things in developement." As they were talking about it they were showing imagineers at their computers with images of coasters and and an drawings of the Statue of Liberty. :veryconfu

I know, I know. Many say their will never be a 5th gate and I have pretty much agreed to this as well. And there are countless threads about rumors of a possible 5th gate but this was the first time I have ever heard and actual travel show, let alone a Disney official even mentioning it. Could there actually be a little truth behind it?

No, I don't think that is what they were refering to. And I'm not one who thinks there will "never" be another park, either. I'd have to check my logs, but I'm pretty sure that quote has been in the special for a year or more, since the last time they updated them.

There is lots going on to fill space at WDW - including the huge Western Way expansion. I have a feeling they were hinting more towards overall property development, not a new park. I'd love a new park, but I don't think this is any indication one would be coming.

I've never been one to step foot in these types of threads but now I will. Yes there is TONS of land available around Walt Disney World for which to build and expand. at this time though....it would be totally financially inappropriate for them to do so. The parks themselves have enough to be done in them that that should be the focus, especially considering the economic downturn happening right now..

That being said. I do believe that they are always planning lots of different ways to expand their footprint, that's just good planning. Don't get yourself with a lack of ideas.

Thank you everyone and goodnight..

And we all know Disney Parks take years of planning and developing. So if they are planning one at the moment they we may not see it for years to come. I just thought it was interesting that Disney even hinted at the idea on the program.

I'm just curious, but what part led you to believe they were talking about a new park?

"..although we can not give away any secrets just yet, there is plenty of room on the Walt Disney World property for us to build and we have many exciting things in developement."

I'm just trying to follow your thought process going from "exciting things in development" to "fifth park".

Right before they mentioned this they were talking about Walt Disney World having 4 theam parks on the property. It was then followed by the question "What's next for Disney World?" causing me, and I'm sure many others, that they were on the same subject.

Ah. Well, that's an editorial choice - remember Disney doesn't produce these. The person being interviewed had no idea what clip package they would show before this specific statement in the final edit.

I wouldn't put too much into it, as when these were being filmed/updated awhile back things like the major Western Beltway expansion hadn't yet been announced. A fifth park is nice to think about, but I really believe by "exciting developments" - the only actual statement there from a Disney employee - he was refering to the multitude of construction projects going on. Remember, "exciting developments" to them and us are two entirely different beasts LOL.

That fits MY thinking process! Great Post!

portions of that show are really old, like 3-4 years old

Indeed they are, just like most Disney media material. They even showed portions of DL POTC when they talked about an update of the ride.

But for the most part they were very up-to-date with their show. I guess they know people are always seeing WDW material. It looks as though it was probably filmed last year.

Leftover materials from the Disney's America plans, perhaps?

I would not be at all surprised if Disney Imagineers are taking sme ofthe plans for the Virginia park that was scuttled by local snobs (to the regret of the locals who would have actually benefitted from it). They had some fairly detailed plans and they probably have them on the table (literally). Stay tuned!

I've seen that same hour long special about 3 times (since its latest update in 2007). As an earlier poster said, the hint about a 5th park was just creative editing by the producers done in order to create hype for the viewer. Right before they went to the final commercial break, they strongly hinted that WDW was working on a 5th gate. However, once they come back from break, the final segment really didn't present any evidence or substance to support this claim. It was basically just a cheap trick to make sure you kept watching.

I have no doubt that there will be a 5th gate someday, but it won't happen any time soon (probably not within 4 or even 5 years). WDI is probably already brainstorming for a 5th gate, because that is their nature. I would be shocked if they aren't constantly throwing around ideas for this. Such activities were likely the motivation behind that final segment of this particular travel channel special.

The only people thinking about a fifth gate are OCD-minded fanboys and gals who can't admit it but are bored with what WDW's four gates currently offer.

'Cause we can argue till the cows come home, but there will not be a fifth gate (boutique and water parks nonwithstanding).

And when Disney talks about future exciting possibilities and land what they're really saying is 'we're going to be building more of Disney's best kept secret all over.'

I live about a mile from where America would have gone. The locals were afraid of all the congestion and traffic the park would bring.

Now the same area is covered with about 50,000 houses, and the traffic is pretty much constant gridlock.

Good thing we preserved all this historic land. :hammer:

I know. I just did not like being called a snob.:) As a historian I was against it. I live close by as well. It was actually the Mellon family that was instrumental in stopping that.
