Fuzzy Memories of a Noobs First Trip report

Pre Trip: I call myself a noob because it had been 20+ yrs when my last visit took place. I was just a young teen, Universal had just opened and the park wars were in full swing. I was not a coaster nut and Big thunder scared the crap out of me. Space Mountain I absolutely loved. Go figure. Now this trip was about four yrs in the making. Saving, making a DD, reading and planning via this site and books. No amount of planning could prepare for this trip.

Trip Report:

We booked 9 months out at the ASM from Oct 8-15th 2011. After the free dining was announced we switch the POR and got a $200 refund. The magic was starting already. Now this next part does suck but I will not get into that here. If you wish you can read the back story of that ongoing ordeal. All that I want to say is thanks for the prayers and well wishes from the WDW magic family.

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=807926

There are two party's involved and we left from the same town in Ohio. The girlfriends family drove to WDW. Three adults and three kids in a minivan, good luck. We decided to fly. Me, the girlfriend and our daughter Allison. We spent the night in Cincinnati with relatives so we would have no trouble making our 10:30am flights without the added 2 hrs drive time.

So the girlfriends family of her mother, sister, sisters husband and their 3 kids leave very early Friday morning. So the great race is official. We had to work Friday giving them a huge head start. But they had to stop for the night and finish their drive on Saturday.

So we board our flight and get belted.

Our daughter, Allie and I.

The girlfriend/ol' lady/babby mamma Katie and Allie

So after a late night, an early morning and hitting a wall in mid flight this is the result.

So after that painful ride we were looking for some real food. I suggested Flame Tree Barbecue and we could also do It's Tough to be a Bug. It should be in the same area. All the rave reviews on here had to be right. As we are following the signs we come across a huge bug that was so cute.

With Photo Pass magic

After meeting Flick, we take in a showing of It's Tough to be a Bug. The wait was very short but the path was so long. Seemed like it would never end. It was done very well taking you closer to the tree in and around the roots then going underground.
So while we are waiting in the chamber with our bug glasses. I was watching everybody take pictures with their glasses on. I start to snicker because I was thinking of WDWMagic member @fractal , his trip report is great. The picture he took of his wife is a classic. I just wonder how many pics turn out that way. If you have not read his TR do so. After reading mine of course. It is my opinion that this is a very underrated show. All the effects were working and it had me laughing a screaming out loud. I don't want to be a spoiler but the very last effect is the best. Give this show a shot don't miss. This is what I love about the parks. It made me feel like a kid again. I was enjoying this as much as my daughter.

I almost forgot. Our seats were right beside Hopper. He was right on top of us. Very good animatronic. I believe the best working one in that park.

After that close call we get some grubs, er..food at the Flame Tree Barbecue. The servings we big and I split a meal of the half chicken and ribs with my mother. That was plenty for the both of us. The food was good better than burger and fries but not super duper like I always heard. With afternoon approaching and a dinner on the horizon we decide to split up. Katie and I stayed in the park a little longer and everybody else went back to resort to have some swim time.

Peyton and Sydney

Sydney

Katie suggested that we ride Expedition Everest. My stomach was doing flips after lunch and I had to pass on EE. Noob mistake....I assumed that we would come back to this park and I would ride it later. We never came back. :(

We're just walking and found our way to Dinosaur. This I could ride. It was a walk on so no time to take in the exhibits. This ride was awesome, but I could only wonder what it was like in its prime. I was sitting on the right side of the rover and about lost my head to the Carnotaurus. When we got off I said, I want to ride again. Katie waited for me in a shop and I did the second ride by myself. I was seated in a rover with bunch of young, tan women. They said sorry in advance for screaming. I was OK with that! :D When we returned to the present I found Katie and after some pin shopping we left to get ready for Chef Mickey's

pack alert. Do I look like a tourist or a local?

Day Three cont: Chef Mickey's 9:00pm

We take the bus to MK and while walking the to Contemporary we see that the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween is in full swing. The CM costumes were a neat touch. We were not here for that yet maybe later, now it's time for...

I do not have many pics but I have video. (I'll post that at the end of day three.) Erin and I split the duties of photographer. She took the stills, I took the video. I have not gotten those yet. I know I dropped the ball.

Here are some shots of the overpriced package pics.

I think this is the only photo with everyone in the same photo. Chad has a nice taste in shorts.

Sydney looks like she is trying to seduce that statue.

My mom had great fun meeting Mickey.

Something I noticed in most of the Character pics. Why am I always hunched over? Noob mistake.. it is not required to be the same height as the characters in the pictures.

We had 10 in our party and were seated in a corner by the windows. You would think that was bad, it was great. It kept all the action in front of us and we had a Magic Kingdom view with dinner. The kids loved watching the fireworks of Hallowishes. Which Allison informed every character that there were fireworks. The characters took their time and made sure we all got the pics we wanted.

When dinner was over my mom headed back to POR. We could not enter MK so we went to Hollywood Studios.

Day Three: EMH Hollywood Studios.

Remember that my stomach felt weird at Animal Kingdom. Well as soon as I get past the front gates I declare an emergency. I told Katie, "I have to go, NOW!" People ask what bathroom is the best. At this moment the closest is the best. It was a cripple the weak and hurdle the dead mad rush to a stall. Katie was none to happy. She wanted to ride Rockin' Rollercoaster with TJ. I told her do whatever we'll meet up in a few.

Fuzzy memories..
While I was occupied I do not know for sure what happened. I do know that TJ and Erin rode RnR. For a 6 yr old she is not afraid of any rides. I think they went on it second time. While they were doing this Chad asked Sydney what she wanted to do? She wanted to see The Little Mermaid. So Katie, Allie, Chad and Sydney headed in that direction. By this time I had powdered my nose and was trying to find them. I get a phone call to meet them in a building near the Mermaid show. I could barely hear and it sounded like she was in a bar with house music.

I thought what are they doing. I guess I'll find out. It was a club atmosphere with kids everywhere and the character dancing. This is so cool. As you will see my child is not very coordintaed and takes a fall but Handy Manny makes it better. I did not catch this in the moment but listening to the video at home the DJ tell the kids to "Drop it like it's hot."

With the club shut down we enjoy the Little Mermaid. This was a pretty cool show. I was impressed by the blacklight Under the Sea song and the effects. Ursurla was playing a pirate, only one eye would light up. It's a nice mix of live action, singing, movie shots. Just a cute show. After that the park was closing and we all met on the way to the front gate. That was a full day.

On to the first video. These are clips of a home movie that I made of our trip. It had photos, video, titles all set to music. Because of restrictions I can only post segments. So enjoy day three.

I want to cry when I watch the entire movie. Just brings back all the memories.

Day Four: EMH Hollywood Studios take 3. Had some trouble getting this update posted.

We get up early after a late night to hop a bus to the Studios. While on the way you can see the Tower of Terror on the horizon. At this point I am trying to get into Chad’s head. He is not a Disney nut and knows very little about the ride. I tell him, “It’s a drop ride. But it’s only a little worse than Pirates.” He chuckled in disbelief. His wife tells him what to expect she had ridden this before on her last trip. She tell him it’s not just one big drop. I say yeah no problem plus it looks taller than it really is. Piece of cake. Which this is total BS. I was scared of this ride. The last time I was on a drop ride was the Demon Drop at Six Flags over Georgia. I hurt my back on that one. I continue, “It is under 200ft it is just made to look way taller. But they did build up the surrounding land to include a basement to make the drop shaft deeper. He rolled his eye’s “Nice.”

I must look trustworthy because a family asked me to take their picture outside the front gate. With 40lbs and a pack how fast could I run. My party leaves me behind and I have to play catch up. That question was answered, not very fast. When I get through the gate a helpful CM offers me a park map. I say, “What, do I look like a tourist?” With a grin on my face. He scanned me up and down. “It was the pack that gave you away, sir” I offer that it completes the outfit. I get a good laugh out of the exchange and take the park map to join the others in the awaiting crowd.

This crowd could be a dangerous time to lose kids so I tell the nieces that if you get separated just head for the big blue hat. Remember to goto the big blue hat and stay. That damn thing is at least good for one thing. The crowd starts to move in an orderly fashion and snakes its way to Toy Story Mania. By the time we get there the FP line is forming daisy chain style. People are running to the machines, realizing the mistake and running against the crowd to find the end. When we get in line it is almost to the One Man's Dream exhibit. Our FP are for after 10:30, this is an EMH morning and this is the only thing we have done yet.
When we see we have some time to kill TJ wants to see the Little Mermaid show. That works out great we wanted Allie to see the Disney Junior stage show. When we get their the Disney Junior morning show are canceled due to technical difficulties. Oh well. Chad and I stay outside while the girls voyage under the sea. I can't remember why I skipped the second show but do remember milling around in a shop. The Animation Courtyard was a dead zone. While in the shop the girls come out and some activity begins to happen.

Day four: Hollywood Studios

I notice a team of people walking around with the weird looking stack of blocks. After watching it interact with a few kids it hits me. A living character of sorts. "Katie you have to come here, come see this!" What? "I don't know just come see, I'm taking Allie. "No your not I'm try to have her pick charms for her bracelet." Hurry up. (Women can't decide) I was like she's two, just pick one or all. Yes I agree let's get those. O.K. you checkout I'm taking Allie, sure that's fine? Yes. Boom! I'm off like a rocket. Now mind you this place was dead but with the show letting out there was a little crowd. Allie and I stay back and watch for a few seconds and I try to position the stroller in it's path. Now I had to move a few positions to get better looks and to put us on a crash course.
It worked the character came right at us. Nobody else around. I got Allie out of the stroller and it began to speak to us. It told us it was a evil robot. I said, "We don't like evil robots." He said, "Then turn my sides to what you want." Allie had no clue and they were tough to turn for a little kid so I helped. We transformed it into a princess. This was so cool!. I think this was more for my enjoyment and I was just using my child as a good excuse. After a few moments of alone time other kids ran up and Katie finds what I was in a hurry to see. When I back away Erin told me she heard someone talking against the shop building with his hand over his mouth. She put the clues together to understand what was happening while she was watching us have our fun.
Allie loved this and Katie came over in time to find the camera and take some video of the character but after Allie's turn was up.:(

Noob mistake...Agreeing to a large purchase of princess charms just to get a 2 minute experience.

Katie also used the Wayne's World extreme closeup technique. :ROFLOL:

Hey Uncle Lupe,

Awesome to see your Trip Report up this Monday morning! Trying to catch up. I admire your perseverance on day 1 - nature seemed to throw everything at you and you guys were still smiling!

So glad your reading. Katie and I joke bout our bad luck. Leave great clear skies weather in Ohio. Get dreary, wet Ohio weather in Florida. Only thing missing would be a the DME bus to get a flat tire.

When we leave the courtyard we are kind of wondering what to do. I suggest Star Tours. Only the two youngest could not ride and Teresa gets motion sick so she was more than willing to watch the kids. Last time I was here the paint was still drying on this new park and that was one of the few things to do. I was expecting a huge line after the recent refurb. Not the case, 10 min wait outside but it was a walk on. We were seated in the front row center, great! I wear glasses and always have a little trouble fitting these things over my specs so they feel OK. I was sure being this close it would be hard for me to pic up on the 3D effect. No problem it is the best 3D I have ever seen. After our tour which crashed on Naboo, you get the point. We left and went right back on for a second ride. On this tour we were near the back and TJ noticed that it was different and trying to yell to tell me. I could not hear her and in the back we were really on a rough ride, but still fun.

After touring we start heading for Muppet Vision. It was something everyone could enjoy. We were stopped by these crazy kids we just had to meet.

Photo Pass fun

This Photo Pass CM had no qualms about taking pictures. She was a one person paparazzi.

The meet and greet line was long but moved at a decent pace. They had plenty to entertain you while you wait. They take kids and adults and get them to re-enact scenes from the show. Fun if not the only things to watch. As you will see in the video Peyton liked the noses.

TJ is taking a pledge for some reason only she knows.

These character were great with the kids maybe because they were fresh. Phineas and Ferb took a break right before we got out pictures. So they were full of spunk. Again the autograph books were a good idea.

Off to Muppet Vision. The preshow was just as boring as I remember. The kids were lost. They are not a big muppet fans and the premise just went over their head. Allie was trying to watch without the glasses and after some fighting to get her to wear the Katie gave up. All the effects were working and the Swedish chef stole the show.

After Muppet Vision we grab a fastpass for Star Tours and head to Toy Story.

With FP Toy Story was 15min wait. But I declared that I would be the champ on this ride. I told Erin that I had years of practice at this on the Wii. Not because of the motion that you have to do. :lookaroun The kids had fun and I got the best score overall. So sad.

We were starting to run out of time so we head toward the Rockin' RollerCoaster. TJ and Erin rode the night before Chad and I had not. So if a 6 yr old can do this so can I. We grab a quick bite at Fairfax Fair and off to meet Aerosmith with only a 15min wait. Again I was very timid about coaster's when I was young. But I had made the decision to step up and do this. We enter the final line and I see a train launch in person for the first time. Oh Crap! What am I doing? You see launch after launch, people are there then gone. So we get on more toward the front and strap in for a ride. As the train leaves and ready for launch. Katie looks at me and says, "You're glasses, you forgot about you glasses." I had forgotten to put on my Croakies. With the countdown begun I yell it's to late now! Off we go. The launch is the worst part of the ride and very scary. I managed to say one word, "shoot" would be the PG version. As for the music I was to busy screaming to even notice what was song was playing. When we get off TJ is jumping to ride again and I am bent over with my heart racing. Oh my god I can't believe I just did that. I was still wearing my glasses. It was still in the morning and not sweating enough for them to want to move around.
We decide to ride the tower but the wait was too long so we run back across the park to use the FP for Star Tours. Did not need them still a walk on. Here are some pics of us as we are leaving.

Your report is cracking me up and I'm only at Day 3! I can (almost) feel your pain on the Safari :) and I love the comment about taking your pic with the characters ( not having to be the same size ). Seems like you did a great job of taking things in stride and making the most of it. It's a shame you missed EE, but just a reason to go back.

Day Four cont: Epcot

This one is for the EPCOT purists. My daughter tells it how it is. When she said this I was thinking of you guys.

We head to Epcot where my mother starts her day by taking the scenic route. She took the bus to MK by mistake and after talking to CM that told a very strange way to get to Epcot.
Noob mistake.. My mother asks a transportation CM for directions. She calls me and I tell her just take the monorail. So she does and finds us waiting near the front gates.

Have no clue why the thumbs up was suggested by the CM.

Not bad for run and gun photos.
