Ft. Wilderness Cabins and EMV Rental

Hopefully someone can help me. My DH is disabled. We are staying at a Cabin at Ft. Wilderness (he can do the steps out front:) ). We are renting an EMV from the Bike Barn. We will also have a rental car since he prefers to drive to most of the parks and parks the car in a handicap spot. My question is how do you get from the cabins to the Bike Barn? Looking at the map, it doesn't seem like it's something that you can walk easily and I know that we can't take the car there. DH is driving me nuts because he is concerned about it so I thought I'd ask here since you guys seem to know all the good stuff.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Fort Wilderness has an internal bus system that will either take you to the front entrance (don't remember the color bus though) or the back, by the lake (where the bike barn is located, I do believe). They should have no problem assisting your husband onto the bus, but do be forewarned, I found the internal bus system to run rather slow! Once you get to the bike barn you shouldn't have to worry about the internal buses your entire trip! Enjoy, I loved staying at the cabins!!

EDIT: I thought I would mention that the internal bus stops are located at the end of every camping loop. Thus, you may (depending on where on the loop your cabin is located) have a little bit of a walk to the bus stop. It is all paved though and the bus stop has a bench/is well shaded.

Thanks for the tip. I tried to get info from the Bike Barn but the CM must have been really busy. He wasn't very helpful. :(

We have a "back up" reservation at the Dolphin that I hesitate to cancel just yet since DH is fretting about the Cabin.........:(

Hmmm...I can not recall the bus color either (Outpost Orange possibly) I would recommend parking in the front lot, catching the internal bus to the bike barn, and both of you driving your golf cart from the bike barn back to where you parked...from there you can load up in the car and head to the cabin and the DH can follow, that was our plan of action this Christmas when we stayed there and it worked out perfectly. If it is possible, I would STRONGLY recommend keeping your reservation at FW over the Dolphin...just didnt give me that Disney Feel when I stayed there. Good Luck and Enjoy your trip

I beleive the bus color from the cabin loops is purple. You'll want to get on a settlement purple bus and get off at the Meadows Trading Post. Also known as the pool/recreation area. Have fun! Fort Wilderness is great!

They'll give you all the information you need at check in. Also, you can park at the trading post for 10 minutes. We stayed in a cabin last spring and really enjoyed it. Have fun!

Thanks everyone. You've given me confidence. Now I think I can cancel my Dolphin reservation. We've stayed there before and really wanted to try something new. Got a great AP rate at the cabins so aside from the concerns about getting the golf cart, we're excited to stay there.

You can drive to the Meadow trading post located in the middle of Fort Wilderness and park there. Walk behind the trading post over the bridge to the bike barn. It's a short walk. The bike barn is located by the swimming pool. :sohappy:

and I know that we can't take the car there.

We just drove over. There is very limited parking in that area (maybe 6-8 spaces) We were renting a golf cart, but I guess the Bike Barn handles the EMV rentals as well. We did the same thing on the return.

EDIT: Just re-read your post. The parking is closer to the Trading Post. The Bike Barn is a couple minutes walk from where you will park. As long as one of you can walk from the parking area to the Bike Barn you should be OK.

You can drive your car to the Meadows Trading Post and park. There a very few spots to park in out front (maybe 5 or 6). The bike barn is right behind the Trading post, a short walk for those of us who don't have problems but it could take a little bit of time for some one who gets winded, for example. You can't drive you car and park anywhere close to the bike barn, it is limited to walkers and those on golf carts, etc...
