This is amusing.
A Fritter is a batter food item - either the item itself is dipped in batter, or the batter contains other items in it, like corn, vegetables, etc. Hush Puppies are a type of fritter. Other sultures usually don't have such a generic term for them.
Funnel Cakes are simmilar, but they do not have anything in them. Beignettes don't either, but if you stuff them then you could porbably call them a type of fritter.
I don't know of anyplace that sells them down there as a snack food, although I remember the Liberty Inn at one point may have had corn fritters. Could be mixed up memories, though.
