Former Disney 'actor' lost to the hurricane

I am surprised they did that. They should have not gone when they knew about the hurricane. They should have taken the boat ashore or tied it somewhere. I hope they find the missing people!

I haven't read the article but I can tell you when hurricanes are approaching ships will go out to sea because they can sail away from the storm. If they stay tied up they will beat against the pier or pilings which causes severe damage.

Yep, she was trying to sail around the worst of the storm. This is 2 instances now that I've seen captains underestimate Sandy's effect on the seas. I think this is further confirmation that this storm is in no way typical.

If the ship had stayed tied up in port if would've beat against the dock until it, the dock, or both came apart. It had to sail. Once you're out there the captain tries to set the best course possible. If conditions exceed what is anticipated you can't just turn around or change course. Ships have to stay sailing in the right orientation to the waves or they risk capsizing.

It was just reported they rescued 12 people, not sure if that is all of them. And yes, ships sail to sea when storms come in as the waves are less devastating. It allows the ship to roll up and down instead of being slammed against a pier. It's not always the best choice, but it helps more than it hurts, especially with larger ships. And this was a "tall ship", meaning large wooden masts with sails, very prone to damage.

14 rescued, two not. The two were swept overboard by the storm but were wearing survival suits. CNN says there's still hope for their rescue.
