A realtor will be a good start, but they are just that....a start. Once you get an idea of where you can afford to live, you will need to do some research into the area. Crime rates, utility cost, proximity to work, etc are all factors that will need to be take into account. If possible, you will also want to get the opinion of someone who either lives in or has recently lived in that area.

A realtor is there to sell you a house. They will not be inclined to tell you the negatives of a particular area.

Comming fron NH the prices are QUITE lower for what you get compared to what you get (square footage). I am feeling out a few areas and also feeling out the work.

I found these sites most helpful

-Zipskinny
-Trulia (lot of people like Zillow, I much preferred Trulia, but Zillow is popular)
-City data forums

I also found a lot of houses through my realtor that I'd have never seen otherwise.

But the best way to find an area you like, honestly, is to just drive around. I spent WEEKS doing mostly driving, taking notes about cities and neighborhoods. When you're narrowing down to a neighborhood, drive it when kids are getting out of school. Visit the Walmart at noon, six in the evening and ten at night. Go into the grocery store. Get a feel for that neighborhood.

When you are serious about buying and not just looking around, I can recommend an excellent, honest realtor...If you want. She is truly a good person and actually will sell people a house they will love rather than push a house that will give her the higher commission. She works full time for a well-known national realty company. But I wouldn't want her to do a bunch of work for free for people who are just dreaming and looking and not actually going to buy, KWIM?

If you want to live near the parks and not have to drive 30-45 minutes in traffic to get there, pick a place near the parks. If you don't want to be riding around with the tourists and all that busyness all the time, pick a place further away. Once that decision is made, it gets easier. :)

I chose a place that many people make fun of. It takes me 30-60 minutes to get into a park, depending on traffic and which park I'm visiting. But I am far from the tourist stuff and that's. what I wanted. :)

I probably spent five weeks driving around and a full five days looking at houses, but I found a house I love in an area I like very much and I'm very happy. I know people who spent much less time who are happy, but I know some who say they wished they'd have spent more time looking their first time around.

Thank you for the info! Lots to think about. I think the first step in talking with the finace is securing a job for one of us to the point where we can easily move down and stay in some long term motel or rent a place. That way we can take time to look around and find a place we love or wait for the right deal to come around.

We are both avid Dinsey fans but I dont think being close to WDW will be a deciding factor where we choose to live. More then likely we will have season passes and stay at a WDW hotel for long weekends and such.

We have had many friends that moved there so we know people in the area and think after we are married woudl be the best time to do this.

Renting to start is not a bad idea at all. It will let you get a feel for the neighborhood without being tied down for an extended period of time.

Renting is a nice idea if you're willing to move twice and all that. It would certainly give you time to look!

I didn't rent, so I had to do my homework before moving.

Everyone will tell you to get a job before you move, but I didn't do that, either. It would have been difficult for me to interview, lol. Can't jump on a plane every time I want to interview somewhere. That was me. I know some people are able to arrange transfers or new positions before moving. The people on City Data LOVE to rant and rave about getting the job before moving, lol. Used to drive me a little bonkers the way they pushed that.

Just tell people you have a job lined up and then repeat your original question. :)

The thing about renting first then looking for work is your against the clock. If you run out of money and still no job thats a tough place to be.

WE may have a saving grace. My finace's line of work has till now provided apartment style housing to her completely free to us. not even a utility bill. If we could do that again that would be slam dunk!

So the next mile stone we are waiting for is end of this month she will have her yearly meeting with her boss to talk about the year and see if she is signing on for another year working at this college.

Has any one ever gone fromt he northeast to the south east? how did you like it? better or worse?

Better, better, better.

The lack of snow, ice and cold is enough right there. That's why I wanted to move.

Toss in a beach or two, theme parks, discount cruises, pretty landscaping all over and all the great stuff there is to do all over Florida...I think it is the greatest place to live in the world. I really do.
