Florida Driving Rules

New regulations in the FLORIDA Department of Motor Vehicles 2004
Handbook:

1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A confident Florida
Driver avoids using them.

2. Under no circumstances should you maintain a safe distance
between you and the car ahead of you, since this space will be filled in
by someone else, putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

3. The faster you drive through a red light, the less chance you
have of being hit.

4. WARNING!! Never come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one
expects it and it will result in your being rear-ended by an approaching
car from behind.

5. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive
bodywork, especially with Canada, NY, or MI plates. With no insurance, the
other operator, very probably, has nothing to lose.

6. Braking is to be done as hard and as late as possible, to ensure
that your ABS kicks in, giving a vigorous foot massage as the brake
pedal violently pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it gives you a
chance to strengthen your leg muscles.

7. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a
good way to prepare other drivers who are entering the highway.

8. Speed limits are arbitrary figures; given only as a suggestion
and are not enforceable in Florida during rush hour.

9. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed
up, or move over, doesn't mean that an Oklahoma driver flashing his high
beams behind you, doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

10. Always brake and rubberneck when you see an accident, or even
someone changing a tire. This is seen as a sign of respect for the
victim.

11. Learn to swerve abruptly without signaling. Florida is the home
of high-speed slalom-driving, thanks to the county,
which puts potholes in key locations, in order to test driver's reflexes
and keep them alert.

12. It is a tradition in Florida to honk your horn at the cars in
front of you if they do not move within three milliseconds after the
light turns green.

13. To avoid injury in the event of a collision, or rollover, it is
important to exit your vehicle through the windshield immediately.
Wearing your seat belt will only impede your high-velocity escape from
danger.

14. Remember that the main goal of every Florida driver is to get
ahead of the pack by whatever means necessary.

15. In Florida, 'flipping the bird' is considered a polite salute.
This gesture should always be returned.

Thank you and enjoy your driving privileges here in the wonderful State of Florida.
Sincerely,
The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles

Additional rule:

Stay in the left lane of a multilane highway or interstate if you have any intention of turning left or passing anytime within the next 10 miles; it never hurts to be prepared.

This is my favorite because it's too true. How many times have you been on the highway backed up for miles not because the road is blocked but because of the small accident that is completley off the road.

I'd also agree with objr and say #14 is really good.

That's all fun and giggles, and I'm guilty of some of those moves myself, but these are REAL driving tips quoted directly from rental car maps given to Miami-Dade renters:

(as Dave Barry says, "I am not making this up.")

IMPORTANT VISITOR INFORMATION AND TIPS:

VEHICLE SAFETY:

2. If unsure of how to reach a destination, ask for directions prior to leaving your point of departure, be that a hotel, attraction, restaurant, shopping mall or place of business. Do not ask for casual street corner directions.

4. If you are told by a passing motorist that something is wrong with your vehicle -- or if someone bumps you from behind -- do not stop. Drive to the nearest well lighted public area and call for assistance (police emergencies -- dial 911). (This one is my favorite!)

11. If car trouble is experienced on a major thoroughfare, lock the doors, turn on flashers and wait the arrival of a law enforcement officer. If someone offers assistance, have them call 911.

13. Do not stop to assist someone with car trouble. Go to the nearest well lighted pay phone and call police (dial 911).

Moral? Be glad you don't live in Miami, and if you do - RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

LMAO... it's No-Fault insurance, but still, it's true. That is the way we think up here in Michigan, too.

Hey...we've had those rules in Virginia for years, you guys need to catch up. But Rob, you forgot one rule... when entering an interstate is it of the utmost importance to stop on the entrance ramp. Safety is the key here, that way you can get a good long look at traffic and plan your merge accordingly.

16a: Stay in the left lane of a multilane interstate highway and wait until the very last second to take your intended exit, which will be on the right. The more lanes you need to cross the better.
