First visit report - 2/4 to 2/8

Hi everyone,

Here's a general overview of our recent trip, some good parts, but i'll mostly focus on negatives because we all know that Disney is supposed to be fun.

It was me, my wife and our daughters; 12 and 6.

Accommodations:
We stayed at Pop Century. Needless to say, the room was cramped but beds were sufficient. thankfully, we spent almost no time in it so, i'd say it met my expectations.

Weather:
Weather was AMAZING! mid 70s mostly sunny, though it started getting humid later in the week. no rain at all! Nights were cool, we needed jeans and a light jacket.

Crowds:
WOW. Between the latin american "fifteen" groups (6-8 or so groups of 1-200 girls) and the extremely rude latin American families apparently celebrating Carnival (which we didn't know about until after the trip), this was enough to make to 65-75 minute waits for the main attractions as well as wall-to-wall sea of people in MK and HS on non-EMH days! OUTRAGEOUS! based on all the research we did, February before Valentines is supposed to be the least busy time to go. WRONG. WRONG. i was hugely disappointed in the crowd levels and it made for a miserable trip, from that perspective.

HS on 2/4:
despite the above rant on crowd levels, HS rocks! we loved the stunt shows and Toy Story Mania. the recommendations to go to Toy Story Mania first after going through the gate are spot on. At 9:15am we literally walked right on the ride with <2mins wait. By the time we were out, FastPasses were for 11:15! by 12 noon, all the FastPasses were gone! We did Toy Story Mania twice and had a great time. Star Tours was fun, but simulated motion rides make me nauseous. Voyage of Little Mermaid was very well done. Rock N Roll Coaster is quite good; but i much prefer outdoor coasters.

I can't say enough about the Indy Jones and Lights Motors Action stunt shows. Totally awesome. The girls and parents loved every minute, and the appearance by Lightning McQueen was great!

MK on 2/5:
Everything was packed by lunch, minimum 30min wait for everything. 1hr for Merida. 75mins for Belle. 1hr for Space Mtn, 30 mins for Speedway. Generally, the rides are all dated, not entertaining and were disappointing. Monsters inc Laugh floor was fun. Fireworks show was excellent and it almost made up for the crappy crowds; well worth seeing. Leaving the park after was a pain. 35min wait in elbow-to-elbow line to get on the monorail back to parking lot.

There was nothing magical about the experience as parents.

AK on 2/6:
Huge disappointment for everyone. We left after eating lunch and getting a few character signatures. Skip this park entirely, IMO.

Epcot on 2/7:
The seas with nemo is great. we loved Turtle talk and the Nemo ride. spent a lot of time enjoying the aquarium. Rude spanish speaking girls cut lines in nearly every character greeting line. cast members did nothing. Test Track was far and beyond the most disappointing ride at all the parks. I still don't know why i bothered going, even though there was no wait.
Fireworks show pales in comparison to MK's, IMO, don't bother, just see the MK fireworks.

Overall, with this being our first experience at Disney, we most certainly will not be returning. absurdly expensive, huge crowds and rude people all in what was supposed to be the LEAST crowded time, made for a regretful trip. from a cost/value perspective, and for as much as everyone hypes up Disney to be, yes... we regret going.

for first-timers who may end up reading this; the BEST decision we made was to NOT buy a dining plan. yes, that's right.... don't waste your money.

pack a couple soft-sided coolers each day, one for each in your party, and get a locker, or throw them in a backpack. it worked perfectly. we enjoyed PB&J, Tuna salad sandwiches, all the snacks we would ever need, soft drinks, fresh fruit, etc. No waiting in lines for anything and we ate whenever we wanted.

for days at MK when you plan to see the fireworks show, you will need to bring in dinner, or plan to eat at one of the cheap short-order cafes that don't take reservations. you probably won't be able to leave the park for dinner and come back with enough time to see Wishes.

Same here I wish it had been a better experience for you. Different strokes for different folks as they say. I am getting my fix in 24 hours! :D

I agree. while we just got back home yesterday, we thought we were going at a great time too....little did we know until we got there how crowded it was! There was a National Cheerleader competition going on that we noticed. As well as the tour groups. however, I am not one to let them ruin my vacation. Still had a great time even with the huge crowds and as for people who try to cut in line, it ain't happening in my group! we are too vocal to allow it. there was an attempt in Toy Story Mania, when the dad rushed by us and on through the crowd, to where part of their "group" was way on up in line, we STOPPED the mom, grandmom, and 5 kids from doing the same! the party behind us agreed with us and they helped "block" access as well...It was a 45 minute wait from where we were inside the que! we dont do it nor condone it! if my group is not together at the entrance to a ride/attraction, we wait until everyone is there!
I would never let any one thing sway me from ever returning to WDW! there is just too much to see and do..and while yes, it is very expensive, there are ways to budget! and while the dining plan is not for everyone, it is very beneficial to those who want to do character meals or the more expensive restaurants.

I had read about the cheer competition happening during that time. It's harder when it's the non-English speaking groups that take over the parks. They look at me like I am crazy when trying to keep them from pushing and passing in line. I am glad they are getting to enjoy the Kingdom but a little patience on my part and a great deal of politeness would make for a much better experience.

I agree with you on the DDP unless its free... or with a special package its just easier to be on your own, so you do not feel like you are constantly on a schedule.
I hate that you did not enjoy your trip. I find it hard to understand how some (like myself) really love everything about Disney.. and others just don't get it at all.. while others are stuck somewhere in the middle trying to figure out how they feel.
I hope that you will not let this trip ruin "Disney" forever for you... I hope that you will pass your letter on to Disney directly so they are given an opportunity to address it, and maybe it will encourage change. Thank you for taking the time to post and letting others see your experience.
I wish you luck in your future endeavors. :)

Hmmm interesting comments.

Ok the first thing- Epcot fireworks are amazing! Some of your comments, I can kinda understand from a first timer, but epcot fireworks are actually fabulous! The times i've sat and cried watching them. Granted Magic kingdom fireworks are amazing too- I dont' really think you can compare them, as they're completely different in theming etc.

The other comment that I find a little annoying, is about Animal Kingdom. Again, it's not always everyones cup of tea, but Animal is so well themed and I personally think the 2 shows from the Lion king and Finding Nemo are fantastic!

I am truly sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the trip, with the money you spent etc. But disney isn't about the crowds, the lines etc- Its just about actually being in the park and going with the flow. The best days I've ever had at disney are managing to ride the main attractions you want to do and just sitting on a bench enjoying being in disney world. Disney are great with random entertainment throughout the parks, that you never know what to expect. If you have the attitude of arghhhh crowds and oh my god the wait times.. you aren't going to enjoy yourself. You need to be clever with you planning and if you dont see everything, then it isn't the end of the world. I've been 12 times for 2 week holidays- I still haven't seen everything!

Character waits are annoying, and I admit we don't particularly bother waiting anymore. We tend to do the crystal palace to see some characters and only get pictures when they're is no wait.

I hope your trip doesn't put you off forever- try and think about the positives from your trip and the memories you created with your children x

I love the Epcot fireworks show! It is my favorite by far! Sorry you didn't enjoy your trip. We always have a great time, but I know plenty of other people who don't get that same love for Disney as I do. If you do ever decide to go again try a Sept or Oct trip. I always have good luck with crowds in September (and usually you get free dining around this time).
