Trip Report Finally reporting ... A last-minute Griswold vacation: POR Jan 22-29, 2015

Well, this is embarrassing. It's been six months since our last trip home. Not sure what my excuse is for the delay. Sure, I've been busy, but who isn't. Anyway, yesterday, on Canada Day, we spontaneously booked another trip for January 27 to February 6, 2016 at CBR when we stumbled across a pretty decent room-only rate online. We also lucked out on getting Air Canada flights on points. So, now the waiting begins for a special offer that will really seal the deal. Last year, we used Play, Stay, Dine & Save, and it was awesome. Fingers crossed for a similar deal later this year, which we'll apply to our room reservation.

Anyway, let's go wayyyyyyyy back in time to January 2015. They were simpler times, before the explosion of selfie sticks and when the MK hub was still a maze of green plywood.

Here's the rather extensive (at least for me) pre-trip, if you're at all interested.

Author's note: I have a decent camera (Canon T3, Tamron 18-200mm) and I love taking a zillion pictures of everything from the headliners (Tree of Life, Cinderella Castle, etc.) down to the little details that so many guests rush right past. But, I'm REALLY bad at getting pictures of me/us. I tried a bit harder this trip, but it's still a bit of a challenge for me. I think I need a "How to get pictures of yourself at WDW" training course.

If you'd like to skip my rambling and just flip through my photos at your leisure, here's the link to my Flickr album for the trip.

So, if you happened to peruse my pre-trip, you'll know that it's usually just my mom and me who make the trek south to our heaven-on-earth home, aka Port Orleans Riverside. We absolutely love the relaxed, laid-back, sigh-your-worries-away atmosphere. The theming suits us perfectly, especially the mansions in Magnolia Bend. And, of course, our favourite feature is the water taxi service heading Downtown. I suppose this is the last report I'll write with the words Downtown Disney/DTD in it. I have very high hopes for Disney Springs, though.

Anyway, this time, we got such a good deal with PSDS (or at least we thought it was great!) that dad decided to jump on the bandwagon too. It was his fourth trip (I think), mom's fifth, and my fourth. When we first went way back in 2003 (?) and stayed at a Holiday Inn, we had no idea how obsessed we'd all become. Staying at POR a few years later -- on property!!! -- really sealed the deal. I've said it before and I'll say it til the day I die: as long as I'm physically and financially able, I want to return to WDW every single year, and will always stay on property. Very few of my friends and coworkers get it. They think I'm crazy, boring, and predictable. Every my two younger brothers just roll their eyes every time I book another trip. But thankfully, several of my aunts, uncles, and cousins have also caught the bug. Some of them went for their very first trip last March, and absolutely fell in love with the World. They've already booked their next trip for March 2016 at AoA and cannot wait to get back. I was talking to one of my aunts a few weeks ago, who told me that her one regret is that they waited this long to give Disney a try, and that she loved it so much, she wants to go back every year that she's able. I guess it runs in the family.

Here's the crew for this trip. We ran into these signs at AK and couldn't resists a selfie, considering we're from Prince Edward Island, where everyone who was born here is called Islanders. I was born here, so can call myself that. My parents, on the other hand, were born in New Brunswick and Ontario, so they'll forever be "from away," although I think they've assimilated well.

Santa (my amazing bf Colin) brought me a bunch of WDW-related books for Christmas this year, so I had quite a bit of reading to do during the month before our trip. I'm actually still reading "How to Be Like Walt," which is entirely awesome minus the random references to how Walt was like Jesus/God. The author just kind of stuck them in with no real link to anything else he was talking about. But, I still recommend it for the Disney enthusiast.

I guess that's enough of an intro. Now, forgive the lack of details, because I have a terrible memory and am working from some rather hastily-taken notes on my phone.

On Tuesday, January 21, we drove from our frigid, snow-buried home on beautiful-in-the-summer Prince Edward Island on the east coast of Canada, to the Halifax airport, where we stayed at the ALT airport hotel.

We had a terribly harsh winter this year. It was the worst that even the 90-year old neighbour could ever remember. Our local weatherman Boomer had a good time, at least:

Here's a little video of a path we shovelled across our front porch:

And here's a picture of the main road by my place. The plough ended up getting stuck and couldn't go any farther, so the road just ended. It took more than a week to get this road opened again. Red fox for scale:

We're still recovering from last winter's snowmageddon, and summer has been very late starting this year. But, enough about the snow.

If you ever for some reason need an airport hotel in Halifax, we HIGHLY recommend the ALT. It's connected to the departure terminal by a very short pedway, meaning that even in winter, you can jump into your shorts and flipflops when you wake up and saunter right onto the plane. They can include a week of parking at a reasonable rate ($80) in the room rate, which is convenient. It's also brand new, super clean, and has incredible beds. So, we stayed that night, and woke up for a disgustingly early Delta flight via Newark, getting us into MCO at 12:30pm. The flights were absolutely painless, and I kind of loved the in-flight wifi. We'd fly Delta again in a heartbeat.

Here's the sun rising over Newark on our approach:

And I couldn't resist an in-plane wifi selfie:

After landing, we quickly made our way to the DME via the fake-o-rail and walked right onto the bus for POR. The weather was BEAUTIFUL, especially compared to the snowy north. Seeing green grass and palm trees while having a warm breeze blowing is a damn fine welcome to Florida. Carl was our DME driver, and he was nice. Not overly enthusiastic, but efficient and friendly. Like everyone else, we really miss the old DME video. The new promotional one with Clarissa (or whatever her name is) is pretty cheesy, but at least it's still Disney-themed, I guess. Naturally, I grabbed the front seat so I could get this rather blurry shot:

IMG_2503 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

And at that exact moment, as always, I got something in my eye. Both eyes, actually. They started to water and it was terribly embarrassing. Must have been my allergies. Despite the fact that I have eye issues every time I enter WDW on the DME, I do like the drive. It gives me time to digest the fact that I'm actually back home, in my paradise, and I can physically feel the weight of everyday life lifting off my shoulders.

We had done online check-in and and also called/faxed a couple room requests. We crossed our fingers for a royal room upgrade, which didn't happen, and honestly we didn't really expect. We did get into Acadian House (building 80), our favourite of the mansions in Magnolia Bend. Room 8401 with a garden view, which was lovely. Check-in was efficient, and we picked up our Magic Bands (which sadly cannot be shipped to Canada pre-trip). The view from the room certainly didn't match our 2014 view of the river, but for the amount of time we spend in the room, it really didn't make any difference.

We wandered over to the mill for some lunch. I got an absolutely massive Cajun turkey sandwich that was pretty good for QS, and a chocolate cupcake to kick the trip off right. No food pics just yet.

Up next, EPCOT!!!

Day 4 - Jan 25: AK part 2

Next up was a quick jaunt around the trail to see the meerkats and others. The trail is another under-promoted gem at AK that most people avoid because it's not a thrilling ride. We love it because it's so neat to see the animals up close at your own pace. We especially enjoy the bird enclosure.

The meerkats were particularly active:

IMG_2820 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

I wouldn't mind taking one home!

I always think the gorillas look fake, but then they walk around and surprise me.

IMG_2823 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

On the walk towards the Lion King, we stopped by Tamu Tamu for a dole whip and some butter chicken. Again, more curry...I can never get enough. The dole whip was okay. I wouldn't get one again. I don't like pineapple. Is that a problem? The butter chicken was pretty good for in-park QS.

And onto the Lion King in its brand new (to us) theatre! The FP+ line was great. Nearly no wait, and we bypassed all the poor standby folks. I got a chuckle out of this wifi sign, considering it's available pretty well everywhere in WDW.

IMG_2830 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

The show is exceptionally well done. The performers are all so into it, especially the monkeys! I may have gotten something in both of my eyes again during Circle of Life... a childhood favourite!

Next week took a stroll along the little trail that goes behind the tree. I forgot was it's called, but it's somewhat hidden. We had to take a selfie with this sign, considering we're from Prince Edward Island and everyone here is called Islanders.

I want a real ToL in my yard. Can I do that somehow? Would it die during the winter? Maybe plastic would be better.

IMG_2879 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Cuties cuddling!

IMG_2890 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We hopped a bus for AKL for our ADR at Sanaa. Another first for us, and we were quite looking forward to it. We'd read a lot of reviews, with most people conflicted between preferring Sanaa or Boma. In the end, I think Boma is still my favourite, but Sanaa is a close runner up!

I got ........ you guessed it ........ more curry! And I loved it. LOVED it. It was much better -- most tasty and spicy -- than the QS curry from Tamu Tamu. I would get it again. I would get it right now. Drool.

I also got samosas to start, which I adored. They came with two sauces, and I liked both, although mom thought one of them tasted like permanent marker.

Would I go back to Sanaa? Yes! Would I rather go to Boma? Probably. But both are definite favourites!

We had planned to end the night early, relaxing back at POR, but decided instead to take the water taxi downtown to see what was going on. DTD is such a fun place in the late evening and night, with live music, plenty of drinks, good food ... the list goes on! I'm quite content taking a day off from the parks to shop and eat there, and explore a DTD-area resort or two.

That's all for day 4! Up next, Epcot Day 2!

Love your AK pics! It is one of my favorite parks, and I never get tired of seeing pics of it! Your meerkat pic reminded me that the Cincinnati Zoo right down the road from me recently got some meerkats from AK, and I still need to make a trip to see them. Can't wait to read more!

Oops! Two more quick things from Day 4:

While we were at DTD, this incredible saxophonist rocked out to some Pitbull. It was awesome. Video:

I also got a shot of the new Starbucks, which is a pretty cool design. The palm growing through the roof overhang fascinated me a bit more than it should have, I think. I'm quite liking the new Disney Springs look 'n feel... to be confirmed in Jan 2016!

Day 5 - Jan 26: EPCOT day 2

Despite our best intentions to hit a 10:15am FP+ for Soarin, we decided to have a slow morning. I grabbed a bagel at the mill, did some laundry in the machines next to our building (at the quiet pool), and lazed on the pool deck in the morning sun. We pushed our Soarin FP til later in the morning.

We hopped a bus for EPCOT and got there around 10:45. Made a beeline straight to Starbucks for my traditional iced coffee 'n SSE shot:

IMG_2904 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We wandered to The Land for our FP+ for Soarin, only to see on the big billboard that it was down. Rotten!!! It's mom's absolute favourite thing to do at WDW. We asked a CM when they expected it to be back up, and she said they weren't sure. She did say we would get an email about our cancelled FP+ and a chance to book another, so we waited... and waited... and waited...

Rather than waiting forever to rebook the FP, we decided to hit up our FP+ for Figment. This was the first time we'd done it since our first ever WDW (off-property) trip back in the early 2000s. I didn't remember it at all. And, well, it is what it is. SD videos that desperately need an HD update, overall dated look and feel. It could use some TLC. But, of course, there are likely Figment fans out there who would rather die a thousand deaths than see anything change. Anyway...onward!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day for EPCOT. Sunny and breezy. Not too hot for us always warm Canadians.

IMG_2917 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

While we were in The Land, we decided to do Living With The Land standby given that there was a very minimal wait, as always. We love LWTL. We will always love LWTL. I hope it never goes away, although some of the scenes need some work (especially the videos). LWTL is the true spirit of Walt's EPCOT, in my opinion, and one of the only examples of that spirit in the park as it exists today.

IMG_2927 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We didn't see any CMs working, and the plants all seemed a bit "blah." Maybe being winter, things just aren't all that exciting? Despite that, we love the ride. But updates - soon - please!!!

When we finished LWTL, Soarin was back up and we still hadn't gotten the email about our cancelled FP+. We told the CM, who let us walk right into the FP line. There was no wait at all and we got in the front row!

Now, as much as I want to love Soarin, it's just hard to do. The screen has gone from having specks in it to large blotches and lines. The video looks like something shot on an 8mm video camera. Dear Disney: WE NEED HD VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please! ASAP! Also, everything smelled like oranges, including the beach and pine scenes. Time for a revamp. We can't wait to see what they do with the reboot, whenever they finally get around to it. The funny thing, though, is that mom doesn't even notice the bad quality of the video. Maybe it's a generational thing, but she thinks I'm crazy/fussy/picky for complaining about it.

After the sadly blotchy ride on Soarin, we popped into Sunshine Seasons for a late lunch. I got some kind of chicken salad and a banana, pretending the salad was something close to healthy after days of bacon, fries, burgers... ahhh, vacation!

Time to start around the world, with Canada first. We generally try to get Canada out of the way because we're so terribly embarrassed by the entirety of the pavilion. We curse our government for not agreeing to sponsor it back in the 70s, when WDW had to foot the bill themselves and make all the decisions about the show, dress, and so on. The outfits are terrible. The Circlevision show is garbage. Off Kilter was half decent (although not Canadian), but the lumberjacks are GODAWFUL. Terrible. Disgraceful. And also not Canadian. Not to mention the fact that you can hear the chainsaws clear across the lake.

The only things we enjoy about Canada are the architecture (it's a beautiful pavilion, minus the outfits!) and Le Cellier.

IMG_2937 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

The lumberjack show. Ugh. Bad. BAD. I think I would take a Celine Dion and JBiebs cover band over the lumberjacks, that's how much I dislike them. But in all honesty, with all of the talent that's come out of Canada, and the vast natural and cultural landscape that makes up our massive and diverse country, could TWDC not come up with something better? Anything?!

IMG_2946 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Okay. Deep breaths. Bye bye lumberjacks, at least until the next time. Hopefully they'll be on strike or something during our next trip.

Beautiful France

IMG_2952 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

And an attempt at a cross-lake shot of SSE

IMG_2957 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We grabbed a beer each in Germany. I had a grapefruit one, which was pretty good, and I'm not even a big fan of fruity beer.

We got part-way around WS, just kind of relaxing, taking in the sights, and peoplewatching. We'd all worn red that day in support of the RCMP, following a tragic shooting and the deaths of an RCMP officer in Alberta.

Eventually, we made our way on foot to the Boardwalk for our ADR at Cape May. Joann was our server, and she was a true southern belle with charm and sass coming out her pores. We adored her. The food was great!! We will probably go back someday, and we try not to repeat restaurants minus our few favourites. I'm not into seafood, but the parents loved the bottomless bucket of crab legs.

The Boardwalk-Beach Club-Yacht Club area is so pretty and peaceful.

IMG_2975 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We caught IllumiNations, despite being rather chilly. I picked up a Helly Hansen hoodie from Norway (one of my favourite stores). IllumiNations might be my favourite show, next only to Fantasmic. I think I like them both more than Wishes, somehow. I have a feeling IllumiNations's days are numbered, and I can only hope that the next show lives up to its awesomeness.

There ends day 5!

Day 6 - Jan 27: MK Day 2

Sadly, the "the end is nigh" feeling started setting in on this beautiful morning. We'd started regretting booking such a short trip, although it all happened very last-minute and I was running low on vacation time from work. Anyway, the sun was out, so we got down to business!

I grabbed a bagel at the mill, which was becoming a bit of a tradition. I wish they had a whole wheat option. Blueberry isn't bad, but whole wheat would at least humour my half attempt at being slightly healthy. We hopped on a bus for MK, and arrived by 10:30. Have I mentioned yet that we had relatively positive bus experiences the entire trip, minus the night we left DHS with a monstrous Brazilian tour group spilling out of the POR bus stop. Anyway, really, we do enjoy the WDW bus system and rely on its efficiency, which almost never disappoints!

Another GORGEOUS Florida "winter" day, with beautiful clear blue skies!

IMG_2982 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We grabbed Starbucks, and took a walk right down the middle of Main Street USA! Quick instavideo:

Love this face

IMG_2992 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Why must there always be a crane?!

So this was Tuesday, Jan 27th. Splash Mountain was closed for its annual refurb, and scheduled to re-open ON SUNDAY!!! Ugh. Just missed it! They were running cars through sans guests. I wanted to hop on one!

IMG_3004 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We hit up our FP+ for the Jungle Cruise. I adore this sign.

IMG_3032 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Megan was our captain, and she was COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORNY. Corny x 10000000. I loved it. I think Walt would have loved it too. "Good news is your boat's here, bad news is I have no idea what I'm doing."

Strolled past the 7DMT and resisted the standby urge, which really wasn't hard to do considering the wait was something like 140 minutes.

IMG_3139 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Next up was the Peoplemover TTA. It was a bit of a scattered and loosely-planned day, but we enjoy just kind of wandering around. Anyway, the Peoplemover had no line and started off well, before breaking down for 10 minutes while we were on board. Thankfully it wasn't too hot.

Next was lunch at the Starlight. I got the angus burger, which was okay. The menu reminds me of the ABC Commissary, which I really dislike. A bit of variety wouldn't hurt.

Pirates was down, so we used our FP+ for the Little Mermaid instead. We got the email about Pirates quite quickly and rebooked for Ariel. I don't remember the Little Mermaid at all, and may have never actually done it before. The movie (and the story) is such a classic, and the ride is cute. The only thing I dislike a bit is how plastic Ariel and Prince Eric look.

Then, of course, we did the Mine Train again, with our last FP+ for the day. I really do like it. Haters gonna hate.

Mom was a bit animated.

On the way out, we caught the Main Street Philharmonic. Talented folks!

IMG_3143 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We took the Monorail to the GF to relax for a few minutes in the tranquil, classy atmosphere. We managed to catch the pianist, who played incredible renditions of B&TB and other classics. There was a newlywed couple who he was fussing over, which was a real special touch for them, I'm sure.

IMG_3183 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

We also caught the brass band up on the balcony. What a spot.

We took the monorail back to MK and hopped on a boat for Fort Wilderness. Up next, a separate post for the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue!

I agree! LWTL is a must do for me (I have a degree in horticulture). The videos do need to be redone and put into HD.
I'm enjoying your pictures!

Day 6 - Jan 27 (cont'd): Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue!

Well, the time had come for us to experience the show we'd been reading and hearing so much about. This would be our first ever dinner show at WDW and we were really looking forward both to the performance, and the supposedly delicious food! We weren't disappointed...

We took the boat from MK to Fort Wilderness. I may have been slightly tired (read: cranky?), but quickly snapped out of it. We were on the dining plan, so reserved tier 3, which ended up being back-to-the-show seats up on the balcony. Thankfully, the seats rotate, so swinging around to see the show was easy. The only issue is that it seems like maybe our reservation got lost, because it took longer than usual to seat us, and we ended up tucked in the corner right above the stage. It made for slightly awkward sightlines, but not really a big issue.

Here are some shots of the show:

The menu. Oh my lord, the ribs. The ribs. THE RIBS. They were unbelievable, and the fried chicken was a very close second. The unlimited beer was a nice touch too. I even got ID'd!

IMG_3300 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

IMG_3208 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Strawberry shortcake for dessert. Easily the most delicious strawberry shortcake I've had in my entire life, and I've had my fair share. It was so so so so so good.

IMG_3253 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

IMG_3271 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

One poor guy (a great sport!) ended up dressed like a fairy princess. It was HILARIOUS. They had a little dance routine for him, and he obviously loved it.

IMG_3286 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

Mom had fun on the washboard.

IMG_3293 by Tom Ogden, on Flickr

And a quick little instavideo of a real hootenanny of a time:

The verdict? We loved it. I mean, we won't be doing it again in 2016, but definitely a few years from now. The jokes are corny, the actors are hilarious, and the music is timeless. We'll be back. I think it's a definite must for WDW-enthusiasts. I can see why some people see it during every trip. The food is A+ and bottomless beer/sangria is an attraction in itself. The service was sub-par, for WDW, to be honest. We didn't really have any type of relationship with the server, who wasn't great at refilling drinks until we flagged him down. Again, I think our reservation may have been misplaced, so we might have been an extra table for him. Anyway, the less-than-great service didn't take away from the night any more than sitting the wrong way did.

Now, getting home wasn't quite as easy as taking the boat over from MK. People seemed rather confused, and there was no signage. We ended up being directed to some waiting buses that were taking guests to 3-4 resorts each. The drivers were marking which resorts they needed to hit, which was efficient, so we didn't stop anywhere we didn't need to. Our bus went from FW to the Contempo, back past FW, then to POR, and on to Saratoga. It took longer than our usual ride home, but wasn't too bad at all. I quite enjoy relaxing on the buses, especially once the POR soundtracks kicks in.

With that, we were exhausted, and went to bed!

Up next, MK Day 3!!! Our last full day :(

Day 7 - Jan 28: MK Day 3 and our last full day :arghh:

Not really sure why, but for our last full day, we couldn't resist going back to MK once again. We slept in...again...and grabbed bagels from the mill. Our DME tickets showed up (SOB!!!), and we hopped on a bus for MK. As is becoming a tradition, we grabbed coffees at the Main Street Bakery...er...Starbucks, and then we had the first little hiccup of our trip. Mom wears contacts (usually not her glasses, because she hates them), and one of them really started irritating her eye. She couldn't keep it open and her eye was turning all red. She tried to get it out in a bathroom, but wasn't able to, and she didn't have any contact lens solution with her to rinse it anyway. I remembered reading somewhere that the first aid rooms are very well equipped, and we were right around the corner from the one behind Casey's, so we walked over. The nurse took her into an exam room immediately, gave her some contact lens solution, and some eye drop samples. She was able to get it out, but figured rather than rinsing it and risking putting it back in, she should just head back to POR for her glasses. So we thanked the wonderfully pleasant nurse, and my parents headed back to POR while I wandered around solo. I got some good time peoplewatching and taking pics. It was another perfectly sunny day.

I came upon the no-wait line for The Little Mermaid, so did it again. It's cute, but I wouldn't stand in line for it. Next, I grabbed a pepperoni flatbread at Pinocchio Village Haus, which was decently good but very much overpriced, even for WDW.

I think I'll just dump some pictures here, since I didn't do much other than wander around (which was great!):

And back to POR we went for our last night in the World, until next time! Which we have decided is going to be January 27-Feb 6, 2016. A nice long trip home!

The next morning, my parents' friends (from PEI) who were staying in Florida for a couple of months met up with us at POR. I said hello and goodbye, and hopped aboard the DME to MCO. They took the water taxi to DTD for a bit of shopping and food. Their friends had NEVER been to WDW before, despite having spent plenty of time in Florida. They were hugely surprised and impressed by both the resort and DTD. I don't think they had any idea that WDW is more than just MK and princesses.

My flights home were painless. Thanks, Delta! I landed in Halifax and spent the night with the bf (he's there for his second university degree...year 2 of 4!) before heading home the next day. I am absolutely dying to take him to WDW as soon as he graduates. He's only been there once before, when he was in his early teens, and stayed with his family off-property, so I think staying at POR or somewhere similar for a week will be a real treat.

So, overall, it was a successful trip home, and a wonderful escape from our winter wonderland! The trip wasn't quite as magical as our Jan 2014 trip, but we made the most of it and enjoyed every bit. I love WDW, I love POR, I love EPCOT, I love the food... I just can't get enough!

So, I guess I'll end it there, and start my pre-trip for Jan-Feb 2016! Just made our ADRs this morning! 180 days... Thanks for reading!

Glad to hear your moms contact issue didn't give her any more problems and had to go to a doctor. Great TR! Love reading it and loved your pictures.
BTW - Did you get all the ADR's you wanted?

I got all of the ones that are reservable as of today. I called because I wasn't able to get Mama Melrose's (with the Fantasmic Dinner Package), Akershus, or Trail's End. The CM told me they're all blocked, but will likely open up in a few days, so I'll keep trying.
