Finally posting my trip report! :)

This vacation was a sort of spur of the moment vacation. After seeing how much Sam loved Disney World last August, we decided to take him back for his 3rd birthday in January 2006. One morning in Feb/March of this year, Tim woke Fran up with “want to go to Disney World in May?” After reminding him that we were planning to go in January, Fran said she would love to. So, during that day, in jest Tim and Fran both did some fake planning of this proposed vacation in May. We had accomplished so much planning in that short time that we decided to go for real! The idea originally came about while Tim had eaten breakfast that morning and used one of the Mickey Mouse glasses for his milk. One thought led to another during that meal, and that made him wish to return to the magic!

Our first day was Monday, May 9th. Tim worked half the day and came home and we ate a quick lunch of sandwiches. After lunch we drove to the Indianapolis Airport to catch our plane, Sam and Fran slept on the way. The flight was bumpy, otherwise uneventful. Sam enjoyed the plane ride, while he played with sticker books most of the time. After leaving the plane, we went to the Magical Express area of the airport and waited about 10-15 minutes and got onto a bus with others from the Caribbean Resort. We were the first stop off. Our luggage arrived in our room about 3 hours later. We then checked in at the All Star Sports Resort, while Sam kept running off and trying to break the fire alarm. We went to our room, which was 1254 in building 1, which was Surf’s Up. It was one of the best buildings, close to both the main building and the pool.

We went to the hotel’s food court, End Zone, for dinner. Tim and Fran both had chicken parmesan with spaghetti and cake for dessert and Sam had plain spaghetti. They were ok. After dinner Sam said he wanted to go home. It seemed like he thought we would go home after eating in a restaurant, like we’ve done so many times. We went back to our room, planning to go to the swimming pool, but Sam refused to go swimming. Fran had put on his toddler swimmers and Mickey swim shorts, Sam then decided not to go swimming and took off the swim shorts. So we decided to relax and just watch tv until bedtime. Sam even put his shirt back on. Then suddenly he was trying to open the door and wanted to go swimming, so we put back on his swim suit and Fran and Tim did as well. We started off in the kiddie pool, which was about a foot deep in the center. It was round and good sized. It had a light in the center and a blue tiled path on the floor that Sam liked to follow. He enjoyed the small pool immensely, so we decided to try the big pool. Sam wore a floatie ring and Tim pulled him around the pool, while Fran followed. All enjoyed it tremendously. After awhile, it was getting crowded, so we returned to the small pool. Sam was tired and fell over a couple times under water, so we headed back to the room. Turns out he wasn’t quite ready for bed, so Tim and Sam took a walk around the hotel, seeing the other themes and taking pictures of them. They returned after a bit and we all went to bed.

Our second day was Tuesday and we went to Magic Kingdom. We planned to arrive well before opening time to be there for the rope drop, but between having a toddler with us and waiting for the bus, we didn’t get there until 9:15. Sam wasn’t in the best of moods, since we had woken him up earlier then his royal highness desired. We ran straight for Dumbo, knowing that it would get long lines later in the day. Fran stayed off to take pictures while Tim and Sam waited in line. The line wasn’t too bad, 15-20 minutes. Sam was a little skeptical about it, and preferred down to flying high, but seemed to enjoy it. Later in the day when we passed by the ride again, he got out of the stroller to wave at the Dumbo riders! We saw there was no wait at Snow White’s Scary Adventures, so we slipped in there quickly. Although many kids are scared in that ride, due to the witch and the darkness, Sam didn’t seem to mind it. He seemed to just be absorbing in all the info of the ride and taking it all in.

We were running very late for our breakfast priority seating at Ohana, so we high tailed it over to the Polynesian via the monorail. We rode in the front of the monorail with the driver, which gives you a really different perspective of the ride. Our driver Annette also gave us co-pilot licenses. We ended up being about 30 minutes late to Ohana, and it was extremely busy. Sam was not pleased at all, he was already grumpy from waking up early and also from being hungry. He did behave well, however, and at the end we found him some crayons to play with. Our time finally came, it was past 11am already and the restaurant normally closes then. We were given pineapple bread at first which was very tasty and some fruit which was ok. Our waitress Belinda then brought us a plate with lots of scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausages, bacon, biscuits, Mickey shaped waffles and all were very tasty. Sam didn’t want to eat these foods, so our kind waitress brought him some Fruit Loops and a banana, which he devoured. The best part of the meal was that Mickey, Goofy, Chip and Dale all roamed about the room greeting diners. Goofy came over first and Sam was still grumpy. Then Chip came by and tried to swipe his banana and Sam cried. The character handler came up and asked if we had seen everyone, I said we hadn’t seen Mickey or Dale yet, so he sent them over. When Mickey came by, Sam lit up, his grumpiness disappeared like magic! He ate much more foods and was in a much better mood. Dale then came by and Sam was pleased to see him as well, giving him lots of high-5s! Sam was then quite chatty and everyone remarked at the big change in him. When we finally finished, we rode the monorail back to the Magic Kingdom.

First stop was to get a Fastpass for Splash Mountain. We then back tracked to Pirates of the Caribbean and rode that ride. No line at all, but the other side had a long line! Was a good ride as always, and Sam enjoyed it. We then decided to ride Jungle Cruise, since we had plenty of time before our Fastpass time came up. It was our first time on that ride; we always tended to skip it. It was a boat ride through animal animatronics in the jungles of different areas of the world, like the Amazon and Asia, while the driver told corny jokes. It was cute, Sam really liked seeing the “animals” and hearing the birds. We were glad we finally rode it. Our time then came to ride Splash Mountain. We did the baby swap for it, Fran went first alone and then Tim rode alone. It takes you on the story of the old movie Song of the South, with Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit and the rest of the characters. You wind your way around scenes from their swamp, with really cool sights. It is a boat ride and we got wet! It has several dips and one big drop of 50 feet at the end. On Fran's ride, she was in the second row of the flume. On the great big drop, the baseball cap from the guy in the front row flew off and Fran caught it! He was very grateful. Underneath the ride area was a play place for small kids with a slide, which Sam played on while we took turns on the ride. Sam had a lot of fun on it. He was very shy to go on it at first, probably due to the other kids being around. Fran helped him up the stairs and down the slide a couple times and then he was an old pro! By the time Tim came off the ride, he was starting to get bossy with the other kids and wanting to go ahead of them. Good timing to leave!

We were very hot and thirsty so we stopped for a lemonade and Mickey Mouse ice cream ears. Sam really loved the ice cream. While we waited for Tim to bring the snacks, we watched a bird come up really close to the other guests, they were feeding him potato chips and Sam really enjoyed watching the bird.

We then headed over to Liberty Square and went on Haunted Mansion. While in the ride queue, Sam saw the riverboat and his hat flew off his head and over the railing. We told the Cast Member when we went in and they suggested we tell the CMs at the end of the ride to help us out. It got a bit crowded, as the Doom Buggies seemed to stop for a bit, probably due to a wheelchaired person getting off. Sam fell asleep while we were waiting to get into our Doom Buggy, while Tim was holding him. We were able to keep him asleep during the whole ride, so he got in some nap that day! After the ride we talked to a very nice CM named Elizabeth and we explained our situation on losing the hat. We assumed they would send in someone to go behind the fence and retrieve Sam’s hat, but she gave us a coupon for a new hat and another coupon for a Fastpass for any ride of our choice. It was extremely kind and wonderful for her to do, Sam was very upset about losing his hat. We couldn’t believe that she was apologizing to us for having to wait for this.

We then headed back to Fantasyland and went to see the Philharmagic show. It’s a 3D movie with Donald Duck trying to retrieve his lost hat (he had lost Mickey’s sorcerer’s hat). It flew by other friends such as Aladdin and Jasmine, Ariel and Flounder and many more other Disney friends. In the end he got his hat and then he got stuck in a trombone. It blew and Donald flew and squished himself on the back wall. It was a great movie, Sam would not wear the 3D glasses, so he didn’t get all the effects, but he enjoyed it nonetheless. We then got in line for It’s a Small World. It was recently rehabbed and was very nice. We took lots of pictures of the dolls while they sang that song over and over! Sam really enjoyed the ride. Fran and Tim liked it, except that the seats were extremely low and uncomfortable. After that boat ride, we found a shop with hats, and luckily they had the same kind that we had lost, so we replaced Sam’s hat and he was very happy about that. We then decided to use our Fastpass on the Pooh ride, and got into line for that. Sam enjoyed the Pooh ride; we rode in a honey pot through the Pooh adventures in the movie. We then walked over to Mickey’s Toontown Fair. We looked around and we got into line to meet up with Pooh and his friends, but the line seemed to not move at all, plus we were running late for our dinner time, so we decided to leave the line. We got on the Railroad back to Main Street and took the monorail to the Contemporary Resort for dinner at Chef Mickey’s.

When we got there, they didn’t have our reservation, they had our previous one for breakfast, but we had changed that to dinner, and they never got the change. Kindly, they put us on the list as a PS anyway. We had a good seat near the stairs. This was another dinner with characters: Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Chip and Dale roamed the room, while Donald stayed in the foyer. The dinner was a buffet and Sam wouldn’t eat anything besides pizza, he had 4 slices (skinny slices). Fran had salad, ravioli shaped like Mickey, meats and pastas and other items. Tim really like the pork tips in sauce. Sam adored seeing all the characters. Minnie gave him a kiss! Mickey tried to steal his cheese! He had fun with the others as well. Luckily we got some great pictures of this dinner! We had planned to return to the Magic Kingdom to see Wishes fireworks, but we were tired and decided to return back to our hotel instead. We figured we’d see Wishes the next night, but we never got to see it. Back at the hotel, we were going to give Sam a bath and just relax until bedtime, but Sam started putting on his swim suit. So Fran took him to the kiddie pool and he swam around and played with a girl from England, while Tim took pictures from the second floor. After that we went to bed.

Day 2

The next day was spent at Epcot, where they were celebrating the International Flower and Garden Festival. We arrived at 9am to spot various flowers from around the worlds, but the best part about the festival is that there are Disney characters in topiary all around the park. We just missed the bus with characters that drove around the park greeting guests; they were getting on their bus and driving away as we got there. Tim then went to get Fastpasses for Soarin’ and Fran and Sam looked at pins in the pin shop. We were going to head into Ice Station Cool, but it was closed until later in the day. After Tim returned, Tim headed over to Mission: Space and rode that since there was no line at all, enjoying it just like last year. Fran and Sam went over to The Living Seas, which was all redone in Nemo style. Sam really enjoyed seeing the fish, especially the ray fish. They had a shark play area, themed with Bruce from Finding Nemo, in which Sam enjoyed playing in. There was also a new show, which was really neat called Turtle Talk with Crush, who is also from the Nemo movie. Crush would talk to us about his life in the sea and would ask us questions about humans. It was very entertaining. The kids sat up in front and he would call on them asking to talk to the kid in the “blue shell” and “white lids”, etc. Dory from the movie also made an appearance and all the kids kept screaming “Dory, Dory” when she popped in. Tim met us outside the theater and we all headed back to Soarin’.

Tim rode first and then Fran did, as Sam was not tall enough. It was an amazing ride. It takes you on a paragliding ride over the trees and waters of California. It has breezes just like it would if you were really there, as well as scents of what you are flying over, including the sea and orange groves. It took a long time for us both to ride, the downside of baby swapping, but Sam was very well behaved and there was another family doing the same thing so Sam played a bit with their child Parker. After there we headed over to the Figment ride and there was no wait at all. Sam seemed to like it. Then we went over to the World Showcase area, where we had lunch in England.

We ate at the Rose and Crown and it was great. We sat outside and Sam loved watching the boats ride by. With our dining plan, we each got an appetizer, entrée and dessert. It was a ton of food. For appetizers we got a prawn cocktail and a fruit and cheese plate. Sam devoured the grapes and Fran loved the cheeses. The shrimps were in an herb sauce which was tasty. For our meals Fran had bangers and mash (sausage and potatoes), Tim had fish and chips and Sam had Mary Poppins pizza, which was cheese pizza on thick English muffins. He had also received a bowl of grapes, but they were moldy, so we just wanted new grapes, but they brought out a whole new plate with new pizza also, and she didn’t charge us for it in the end. We enjoyed the food, it was very delicious. We were full but we got dessert too, Fran got warm apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and Tim got citrus trifle. Both were good, Sam loved the ice cream! After lunch, we went through the other countries, met up with Belle and Beast in France as well as an acrobat climbing chairs that he was stacking. In the American Adventure, we stopped to see the show, it was Sam’s nap time, and he did indeed sleep through most of it. While walking, we saw the bus of characters drive back into its home behind the World Showcase Pavilions, our second time missing that bus that day! We continued looking at countries and rode the Maelstrom boat and Mexico boats, which Sam really liked. While walking to the front of the park, we saw the character bus leave the station so we followed it! We finally met up with some of the characters. They didn’t stay long and Minnie and Mickey’s lines were very long, so we visited Prince John and Robin Hood. It looked like it was going to rain so we headed to see Spaceship Earth, hoping it would finish raining while we were inside. Sam really enjoyed the ride and didn’t want to get off. Unfortunately it hadn’t rained yet. We decided to continue with our plans of heading to the Magic Kingdom for the Extra Magic Hours. We planned to eat dinner at the new place in Tomorrowland, Terrace Noodle Station. Tim and Fran had big noodle bowls sharing noodles with Sam. All enjoyed them. We also got more cakes for dessert with our plan. The rain kept coming down harder and didn’t look like it was going to stop, so we instead decided to head back to our hotel. After arriving back, it let up quite a bit, but was still raining. The pools were closed. We got ready for bed and were lying in the bed in the dark and Sam was just not ready for bed, bouncing around. So Fran took him for a late night walk to get apple juice, a pressed penny and more sightseeing around the hotel. When we got back, he went straight to wake up Tim. Luckily all fell back asleep shortly to end the day. Unfortunately, we missed the Wishes fireworks show again.

Day 3

Thursday we got a late start. We started out by going to Downtown Disney to do some shopping. After looking in some stores, the boys didn’t feel like doing more shopping, so we only bought two things. In the big toy shop, we found a place where you can fill up a box of items for the Mr. Potato Head. We filled up ours with Mickey hats, gloves and other touristy WDW items. Sam really likes to play with them. The other thing we bought was a music CD with the soundtracks from all the rides in the parks. We had made an 11:55 lunch time and were running late so we had to catch a bus to the first hotel that came, which was Port Orleans and then take another bus to the parks, since they don’t have direct busses. It was nice to see Port Orleans again; we stayed there 5 years ago. We finally arrived at Disney-MGM Studios and went first to our lunch spot, the 50’s Prime Time Café. Here again, we had to order a ton of food with our dining plan. For our two appetizers we ordered onion loaf and fried boursin cheese, which was like a big round cheese stick, but soft in the middle for spreading on crackers. It was very good and Sam really loved the onion loaf. For entrees we ordered the meatloaf for Tim and fried chicken for Fran. Sam got chicken nuggets and loved them so much he took the leftover ones out the door to snack on. Desserts were yummy and huge! A big chocolate shake for Tim and banana split for Fran. Sam didn’t want any, continuing to eat those chicken nuggets!

After lunch, we headed out into the park. We first headed over Animation Courtyard so that Sam could see the Playhouse Disney show. He really enjoyed it again, most of it was the same from last time, but JoJo replaced the Olie section. He danced and sang and cheered and laughed and had a great time. Tim videotaped the show so he can watch it for a long time to come. Afterwards, we were going to meet the Incredibles, but they force you to watch a movie first and there was an extremely long line, so we left. We headed to Mann’s Chinese Theater to ride the Great Movie Ride. It highlighted many great moments in movie history. We were hoping Sam would sleep through it, but he watched it excitedly. Just at the end of the ride, he did fall asleep and he was put back into his stroller. Tim wanted to ride the Rock n Roller Coaster, so while Sam slept he took that opportunity to ride it. It was getting very hot and humid so Fran and Sam tried to find a cool spot in the shade while we waited. After Tim rejoined us, we headed over to meet JoJo and Goliath. She wasn’t out for a few more minutes but there was already a line. He had just woken up so was still grumpy and didn’t really appreciate seeing them, unfortunately. Down the street we saw where Mickey was greeting and there was no line for him so we stepped in there. Again, his grumpiness was cleared by seeing Mickey. He hugged and kissed him and gave him high-5s. We then headed to the back of the park to Al’s Toy Barn to see the characters from Toy Story, after grabbing Fastpasses for the Lights, Motors, Action show. Just as we arrived, Jessie left, even though we were next in line, but we did sneak in to see Woody. Buzz had a really long line and we didn’t get to see him, since he left too. They said they would return in 15 minutes, but our dinner time was fast approaching.

We got the dinner package for Fantasmic at Hollywood and Vine again. Sam was really overheating and was screaming. He wouldn’t take any water or anything. Tim changed his diaper then he seemed ok, but then started fussing again. We practically had to force ice cubes on him. After some ice, Fran offered up her iced tea and he gulped it down. Seeing Tim’s coke, he decided to gulp some of that too. Then he spotted his chocolate milk and gulped some of that! After that he was much better and not upset any longer. He didn’t eat much, but he did have a large lunch. They had the exact same chicken nuggets, but he didn’t eat any. He did eat some macaroni and cheese. The restaurant is a buffet and Fran and Tim had many different items, including breads and salads, pastas, potatoes and flank steak, which was tasty. After dinner we headed back towards Al Toy’s Barn, hoping that the Toy Story characters would still be out, but they weren’t. So we just went to the theater for the Lights, Motors, Action stunt show. It was pretty neat, they did car stunt tricks like ride on two tires and turn around crazy and jumps. There was a lot of time between stunts that they talked and it was too slow between stunts. Sam really liked the car show, but also did not like the breaks between. We also got to see Herbie the Love Bug and he split in half. There really wasn’t anything else we wanted to do, so we headed to the Fantasmic show theater. We got there about an hour early and had some nice people around us. Sam did really well sitting there for an hour. Tim bought a string light up toy. We saw fireworks go off behind the mountain, before our show started; we think it may have been the fireworks from Wishes. Finally our show started and it was wonderful. Sam really liked it, especially the fireworks at the end. Straight to bed after that show!

Day 4

Friday was our last day. It was expected to be very hot, so we decided to change our plans and not go to Animal Kingdom and go to Epcot instead, where most things are inside where it is air conditioned. We started out slow, and packing our stuff ready to go. When we got to the park we went to the Land for an early lunch at the Sunshine Seasons cafeteria. Sam had a small sub sandwich with applesauce which he gobbled up. Tim had an Asian steak sandwich and Fran had a ham sandwich. We had to get desserts again, Tim got chocolate cake and Fran got ice cream, which Sam adored. We had gotten Soarin’ Fastpasses again before eating since we liked it so much the previous time. After lunch we decided to ride the Land boat ride: Living with the Land. It explained about the land and agriculture, and included a ride through their greenhouse where we saw plants of foods that they were growing. Sam really liked seeing them, especially the banana trees! When we pulled back into the station, Sam didn’t want to get out of the boat, he said he wanted to ride it again. We persuaded him to get off, because we are bigger then him! We then decided to not ride Soarin’ again, since it took so much time to do the baby swap, and we didn’t have much time left.

Since Sam liked it so much, we decided to go back to Living Seas, where we saw the Turtle Talk show again. It was much different then the previous show, but still was great. Sam got grumpy again and didn’t want to leave. They had a Kidcot coloring station, so Sam colored some fish, until another child came by and wanted to use his markers. So Sam was removed from the coloring area. He really wanted to ride the escalator, he really likes them, so we rode up and down and left. We then headed to Ice Station Cool to taste the sodas from around the world. Fran and Sam only tasted the watermelon one, which is yummy. Tim made the mistake of trying Beverly, which is very bitter. En route to the exit, we spotted Minnie’s Butterfly Garden. Inside the room were many butterflies flying around and Sam absolutely adored seeing them. We then headed to Mouse Gears to do some shopping. Afterwards we went to the Electric Umbrella to use up our last meal, even though it was still early. Fran and Sam shared chicken strips and fries and Tim had a roast beef sandwich. It was getting late, so we headed back to the hotel. Sam fell asleep on the bus to the hotel. We picked up our baggage and after 20 or 30 minutes the shuttle to the airport arrived. At just that moment, Fran realized that one of the bags was missing. Tim went and got it from Luggage Services quickly! There were 2 or 3 other families that got on with us. At the second stop another 2 or 3 families got on. At the third stop, Tim (who was sitting behind Fran who was holding the still sleeping Sam), said scoot over I’m sitting with you. Fran asked why and then looked out the window… there were about 100 people waiting for that bus! After waiting at that stop for a long time deciding which of them would get to stay behind, we left for the airport. Turns out some of them had been waiting for over an hour. Hope none of them missed their planes. We watched a movie on the bus and when we arrived at the airport they dropped us off where they picked us up, which was very disappointing, since it was not at departures, but at arrivals, and was a very long way from our check in area. We arrived at our gate (35) with lots of time to spare, and learned that our flight would be an hour late to arrive from Indy, due to lightning storms. We finally got on the plane and arrived in Indy ourselves, when we landed at the other end of the airport, so had to taxi forever. When we got to our area, we learned there was another plane in our gate, so had to sit and wait another length of time for them to leave. We sat on the plane in the airport for 45 minutes. Our baggage took forever to start coming out, so Tim and Sam went to get the car, and Fran picked up the bags, and we reached the outside area at about the same time, luckily. It was still raining in Indy, so we drove home in the rain, Sam quickly fell asleep as it was almost midnight, and we arrived home at 12:30 am and went to bed.

Thanks for writing all that. I wish I was brave enough for a spur of the moment trip. I'm a plan-a-holic! Great report.

I absolutely loved your report! You have a great memory:) I have noticed with my two little guys, when they are really cranky they are usually thirsty or hungry or just plan exhausted. Sam seems to be the same way:) . Which restaurant was your favorite? You made me hungry reading your report!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It's, of course, wonderful to go and be able to have these memories. I try to write them very detailed so my family members that are not fluent in Disney can understand some of the things and can try to feel like they are with us. They also make great additions to the scrapbook! :)

Sheryl ... I used to work on the memories after we got home - we sat down together and tried to remember a few days later.... and it was hard! This time I took a small notebook and pen in my backpack and kept notes of what we did and then when I got home I put it into a story. Then while we waited for meals or in line or during baby swap, I could jot down things we had done so far for the day.

I have a poor memory, so making these stories brings it all back to me, days, weeks, months and years later and I can feel a bit of the magic while at home.
