News Expect closure of Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland to impact Walt Disney World

People here keep pointing out that WDW really needs international tourism to get back to normal, but that's true for most Disney parks.

To my surprise, 26% of people who visited HKDL last year came from outside of HK or mainland China. Given its shaky financial ground, it really can't afford to lose international business any more than WDW.

Shanghai and Tokyo are the only two resorts that could survive with just tourists from China and Japan.

Like I said before, it's an election year. Amity will be open for the 4th of July.

But now we may be safe from the shark by then.

The election has little to do with it. Trump may push for an accelerated opening, but places like Disney will be among the last things to reopen and there's actually not much Trump has done on the "closure" front. It's all been states/local leaders.

California officials have said while some restrictions may be relaxed in June, it will likely be November before any big crowds or sporting event activities are likely to happen, which does not bode well for Disneyland.

China's leadership has about the same idea of reopening over there as we do here in the states. It is not exactly the same, but for point of reference, education still does not have any idea or planned date on when teachers and children will be returning to schools yet.

Hopefully The Walt Disney World Company will sell off any park they don’t own 100%. Keep WDW, DLR and Paris. Just collect the licensing profits from them ( just like Universal/Marvel agreement). They finally need to do a Six Sigma Lean project and become more efficient.
I think that disentangling from China is a good idea. Things are getting pretty hot on that front in many ways.

The thing with China is, it has been a lot of stress and not the return on profit they were hoping for. This all before Covid as well.
There is a reason Hong Kong Disneyland has always opened at 10am and closes relatively early. Those who are fighting against it never want to go, and those who would like to go maybe will go to Shanghai which they feel is a better park, or if they are that well to do, they just go to one of the other Disney resorts in the world.
