Earth Globe rehab

missing globe

In August, 2005, we saw ROE without the globe. It was a very windy night with lots of lightning. Not only did they have a huge gap where nothing was happening, they also turned off some of the rafts during the finale because of the wind. I got it all on video, and all you hear is "woa...and we are globeless!" Also there are the random "wows" of the crowd whenever there are huge lightning flashes. It was definitely an interesting video for my archive. Needless to say, without the globe, the show does seem to just come to a halt while music plays. They will definitely make adjustments when the globe goes under refurb, they will have to.

For the life of me, I have never really been able to tell what they are showing on that globe. I know its a really technologically advanced thing to wrap a TV screen around a shpere, but its too grainy for me to be able to figure out what they were showing besides a random person or two....

I didn't think to ask what they would do to fill the abscence?
I just asked a CM who used to drive boats for the fireworks cruises (and has seen Illuminations 1,000+ times) what he thought. His response was, "They have done without it before..."

Seems like it would leave a big gap with nothing to see. I love IllumiNations, but the globe is an important part of it, both to keep the "story" moving, and also as symbolism. It won't be the same without it.

Are you saying that no matter where you are you can't see the globe at all, or you can't see what's being broadcast on it? Either way I've never had a problem with either.

I'm a little short, so that may explain a few things.

But sometimes I can still see it, its still really boring. Don't kill me RoE fans.

RoE succeeds because of the exemplary score. However, I like the globe segment. It's relaxing and somewhat surreal. Plus, I've never had trouble making out the images on the globe.

I do agree that it needs a refurb though. Some of the led's have been burnt out for a while now.

Can you post it on YouTube or something?

Didn't I hear somewhere that they're thinking of upgrading the video technology on the Globe? Perhaps that's what's being done during this refurb?

And for those who complain about the lack of fireworks for 4 minutes in the middle of an amazing 12-minute show, just remember that the original IllumiNations was 16 minutes long, but only had fireworks for the final 6 minutes. The first 10 minutes were entirely lasers, fountains and lights.

(And on the technical side, there can't be any fireworks during the globe's move because it's driven by a live person standing out in the open, so that is the reason for the lull in the show)

If they somehow still do Illuminations without it, I'll be thrilled! The globe is my least favorite part of the show.

I *really* hope they don't cancel Illuminations for those weeks!
I agree with you partially. The globe is a main part of the show but sometimes I just want to watch the fireworks.

Not so sure about that... I believe it uses a remote navigation system during IllumiNations.

signature images

I think the globe means a lot to people who are visiting from other parts of it, and for those with trouble making out what's shown, much of it is 'signature images' from the countries depicted. e.g. Tango from my wife's native Argentina, which literally brings tears to her eyes every time (and that's a lot of times). Thats how I knew a few years ago that it would be the perfect time for a proposal, and so it was ...

There also seem to be 'signature images' from other represented countries/continents, which are 'reflections' of a bit of the culture and geography from those various parts of the 'earth' - so I think its a good tie in with the title/theme of the whole show.

Here is a link to my uploaded video:
(sorry it took so long)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpwgzA3XLMg

It is a shortened version of ROE. (YouTube only allows 10 minutes)
The footage was shot back in August, 2005, on a night when there was a lot of lightning, rain, and high winds. The show was delayed by over 15 minutes before it finally started.

The video starts with a few seconds of the lightning we saw that night. (got bigger oohs and aahs than the fireworks sometimes)
It then jumps to the Globe's grand entrance.... or not. Notice how long this segment really is with the globe being the spotlight.
Then, when fireworks start to get going again, we jump to the ending.
Notice that some of the barges do not shoot the roman candles during the finale. I am assuming this is because of the high winds that night.

Will there have to be a major change if they take the globe out for a refurb?
I think so.

EXACLTY!

I notice something new everytime I see it. Just this past week I noticed the scream painting in the "arts" portion of images.

I spoke briefly with some entertainment managers last night at Epcot and they told me that the Earth Globe was going down for three weeks in January. He said that it would get an updated video system. I didn't think to ask what they would do to fill the abscence? :hammer:

I did ask if there would be a new show for the "25th" (without specifying Epcot) -- his response was that nothing was official yet . . .

So I spoke with the same manager again, and he said that they "were editing the music down and adding more fireworks"

He also said that they would be testing in the coming weeks so that they would only have to "flip the switch" when the globe goes down for rehab. I didn't think to ask if it would be the 9:00 show or later in the night . . . I would think the latter.

If you like to linger in World Showcase like I do, if you are by the bridge when they begin to pull the barges in prior to the inferno burn-off, those managers typically more than willing to talk about any aspects of the show . . .
