so i would really like to stay at a deluxe for my our next trip and i know that renting a studio DVC is much cheaper than staying at the related resort for the same amount of time...so heres my question. I really enjoyed having the DDP is there a way to still have a "vacation package" if you rent points?

or in a nutshell are there any cons?

We are renting for the first time and using David's for our upcoming trip in October (www.dvcrequest.com). While we don't care for the dining plan and get our tickets through UT, we had the option of adding tickets, DDP and ME (we are using ME). As the PP mentioned, if you rent points you are not able to take advantage of any discounts that may come out and, at least for David's, all sales are final and non-refundable.

how do you not like the DDP? you get to eat like kings for the same amount....granted some may argue that the DDP has watered down some offerings and others bring BP&J to Disney...and to that i say see this bird...let it fly.

There are a couple of reasons why we don't care for the DDP. There is no value in it anymore. For example, if you are going to pay for the DDP, an adults TS credit costs roughly $37-$38. There are not many 1TS meals where an entree, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage will cost close to that, not unless you force yourself to eat the most expensive things on the menu. I don't like forcing myself to eat steak when all I am really in the mood for is pasta, you know what I mean? Not to mention I don't like to eat dessert right after my meal. I'd much rather have an app instead and then have dessert later on in the evening. We also don't care for the food at 90% of the dinner buffets, which do have some value when using the DDP, but are terrible values to pay OOP for. And don't get me started on using 2TS credits for a Signature... talk about a bad value there. Most nights we like to eat at Signatures so the basic DDP doesn't work for us in that way. We have thought about doing the DxDP but we also like to have a few meals that are not on the DDP, like bluezoo and Shula's and some of the other dining experiences that aren't on the plan. I could go on with my reasons why we don't care for the DDP. For us, the DDP doesn't work. For others, it does, but the DDP is finding itself with less and less fans. For us, it works out much better to just pay OOP.

i do not even look at it as saving per say for value but for being paid and taken care of....but than again unlike most members of this forum i dont roll in money and light it on fire for boredom =P

but than again we got free DDP because going to the world in a non value season is well...why.

We've considered renting several times and never pulled the trigger. The only down side I have seen is that with most places you have to pay up front for the entire stay (or close to it), whereas with a package or room-only you can put a minimal deposit down and pay over time.

There's an easy way to get that "paid-for" convenience for meals without the DDP - just take the money you would've spent on the DDP and put it on a gift or dedicated debit card. You'll spend less overall (usually) and won't have a bunch of left over food!

You absolutely can get the DDP, but I'd avoid it. We're using it next time (while staying in a DVC Villa on rented points) -- but ONLY because we're taking a relative who is not well-off and I want to surreptitiously pay for her food without her knowing about it. (We're telling her a little white lie that there's a free dining promotion during our visit.)

I did the math last time and the DDP cost us more money than we'd have paid out of pocket for the same restaurants, ordering what we'd typically order. If you go to any 2-credit restaurants, it's an even worse deal. The gift card suggestion from RedDad above is a great idea, and you may be surprised how much money you have left at the end of the trip.

Hope you have a great time! :)

We were able to pay for our rental a bit each month, up to 45 days pre-arrival.

Did you rent through a service like David's or did you rent directly from a member? The rental service companies that I found when we were looking had to pay in full at the time the reservation was made.

Yes the member will add the dining plan to your reservation for you. We have rented points in the past and are doing so again in May and have had the dining plan added for us. It really is a great way to stay deluxe for less money! We have been to Diseny so many time now that we like to spend more time at the resort, so staying deluxe is great for us!

From their site:
Luckily The DVC Rental Store does offer a flexible and interest free payment plan for all Disney Vacation Club Rentals.

Although it is not officially called a “payment plan” it offers many of the same benefits. Best of all, it applies to anyone who signs up.

The DVC Rental Store allows you to book your Disney Vacation Club package by making a deposit equal to $8.00 per point rented. After this point you are free to make payments in any amount and whenever you want.

There is no interest or additional costs to use this feature. The only requirement is that your vacation package must be paid in full 45 days before your trip.

Please note that due to the fact that a Disney Vacation Club member’s points expire on a annual basis any cancellation can threaten the use of those member’s points. For this reason all payments are non-refundable.
