Dreamworks SKG to Disney?

Just saw this at the New York Times.

DreamWorks in Talks to Move to Disney
By Brooks Barnes AND Michael Cieply

LOS ANGELES – Steven Spielberg may be moving to the Walt Disney Company.

DreamWorks SKG, Mr. Spielberg’s boutique production company, is in advanced talks on a deal to distribute its movies through Disney, according to four people with knowledge of the talks but who asked for anonymity because negotiations are not complete. A deal with Disney, which could come as soon as Friday, would replace one Mr. Spielberg arranged with Universal Pictures just four months ago after an acrimonious divorce from Paramount Pictures.

Spokeswomen from Walt Disney and Universal declined to comment. Stacey Snider, the chief executive of DreamWorks, declined to comment.

That would be quite a healing of relations between Disney and Spielberg if this is the case. I hope this is true as he is my favorite director. I would be surprised if he didn't stick with Universal, though, as that's the studio that he cut his teeth on with Jaws, and otherwise gave him his big break.

This deal would provide a bit more hope for further development of the Roger Rabbit franchise, which had gone sour due to dispute over the cartoon shorts produced after the movie came out. Hopefully, it would lead to some more of those wonderful attractions that were planned (thus tying this thread into WDW News and Rumors :D), such as that Baby Herman ride.

I find this very unlikely. Dreamworks and Pixar get along like a house on fire. Remember the whole Bugs/ Antz controversy that started them off?

Disney would anger a lot of people (Including Lasseter) if they go through with this.

This has been floating around for over a year. IMO I doubt it'll ever happen, and the NY Times has not been know for its truthful reporting in over a decade.

EDIT: Yet everybody declines to comment. Hmmmm. No comment is often an affirmation.

I doubt that Dreamworks Animation is a part of this deal. If I remember right, they were fully bought outright by Paramount. This deal probably solely pertains to live-action films produced by Dreamworks SKG.

Yep....

...from the New York Times...

Update | 1:53 p.m. Universal Pictures issued a statement Friday acknowledging that DreamWorks was shopping elsewhere. “Universal Pictures has ended discussions with DreamWorks for a distribution agreement,” it said. “Over the past several weeks, DreamWorks has demanded material changes to previously agreed upon terms. It is clear that DreamWorks’ needs and Universal’s business interests are no longer in alignment. We wish them luck in their pursuit of funding and distribution of their future endeavors.”

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
Makes sense.

Judson Green who is on the Dreamworks SKG board... used to head Disney Parks and Resorts.

Strange, but good!

Love your new avatar, as always.

Does this mean we can finally have Roger Rabbit back?! :sohappy:

I'm hoping so! I really don't know what the current status of Amblin (Spielberg's production company that co-owns Roger) is, I don't know if he has folded it into Dreamworks or what, and how this particular deal will affect that. Either way, the important thing is that this deal would indicate relations would apparently be vastly improving between Disney and Spielberg, which would better allow for the possibility of more Roger Rabbit movies, rides, and such.

So would these be distributed under Walt Disney Pictures or the other branch (sorry, I forgot the name of at the moment)?

And, once again, I have no idea what the popcorn/cynic comment means. Anyone want to elaborate, other than "If you're not smart enough to get it..."

That would be SO fantastic. Roger Rabbit is and has always been my favorite cartoon character. Kind of bites to not have *anything* about him available in pretty much the last twenty years.

He still regularly walks around Tokyo Disneyland. I didn't know that prior to my trip, and when I saw him, I literally pretty much pushed a bunch of Japanese kids out of the way and ran to get a picture with him. It was one of the highlights of the entire trip!

You know, another interesting thought that just came to mind- the currently under construction Universal Studios Singapore has an entire Dreamworks-themed land in the park. I wonder if this will be affected? Or if like Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, since it was negotiated prior, they can keep it for as long as they want but never add to or change it.

May be one of those contracts that states Universal and the theme park rights the movies. Remember, this is just a distribution deal. Disney and Dreamworks is not merging.
