I was thinking of going in Feb but i'm reading reports of the boarding passes being sold out before the parks even open..
If I'm staying offsite and arrive at normal park opening is there a chance that the ride is already sold out and I won't be able to get on through the whole day?
Boarding Groups
were distributed prior to park opening for a few days when the attraction first opened, but that is
not the current procedure. Now, if you are inside the park prior to official park opening time, and are able to open the app and join a boarding group right at official park opening time, you should be able to join a boarding group.
You may also see reports about boarding groups being gone within moments of park opening time, such that not everyone who tried in those first couple of minutes could get one. That was true for a few days during the Christmas/New Year's week (the most crowded week of the year). However, reports over the past couple of days, with more moderate crowds now that the holidays are over, suggest a more comfortable window, with boarding groups lasting several minutes, and backup (non-guaranteed, higher-number) boarding groups remaining available for half an hour or more. Regardless, you will want to make sure that you have arrived INSIDE the park, along with everyone else in your party for whom you'll be attempting to book a boarding group, and are ready to open up the MDE app and join a boarding group the moment the clock strikes (8am, 9am, whatever official park opening time is on the day of your visit). Obviously, this also means you'll need MDE installed on your phone, with everyone in your party linked to your account, ahead of time.
If you run into technical difficulties that prevent you from joining a boarding group at that time, immediately seek out a cast member for assistance.
*NOTE: This is the way the procedure currently works. You'll want to check back here and take note of any changes that take place between now and your visit, as Disney can make, and has made, dramatic adjustments without warning.
