Documents for 8 year old??

When we booked our upcoming 4 night trip I could have swore that our TA said that our 8 year old daughter was able to travel with only a copy of her state issued birth certificate. Is this still the case? I was just reading on the cruise website and i thought it said that she needed a state issued photo ID along with her birth certificate. Can someone clarify this for me?

If she does need an ID I guess her and I better run to the DMV tomorrow...

To cruise, all you need for a child is their birth certificate. You do not need any kind of photo ID. BUT, if something were to happen and you needed to fly back from one of the ports of call then it would be a real hassle without a passport. We got passports for our kids because we cruise every other year. If this is your one and only cruise for the next 5 years or so then I would probably just take the birth certificate.
