Droids only flourished in the prequels. It was likely animus following the Clone Wars that led to their poor treatment in the sequels. All droid environments in the OT, for instance were sorts of dungeons with broken parts and even droid torture. There was very obvious prejudice.
So it's actually accurate to the universe. It's just not something I personally would have done, especially considering one of their big shticks in SW Land is building your own droid. Make Baatu more progressive and droid-friendly.
