Disneyland thoughts post-Genie

Right now at DCA alone, the following rides are temporarily closed:

-Pixar Pal A Round
-Jumpin Jellyfish
-Silly Symphony Swings
-Goofy’s Sky School
-Golden Zephyr
-Grizzly River Run

How is that possible?

The Little Mermaid is at one hour! I’ve never seen it longer than 15 minutes on any prior visit. I have no idea what’s going on, but Disneyland is fundamentally different. The beautiful thing about the park has always been the large number of small attractions one could hop on in 5-10 minutes. It was a serious distinction from WDW where that no longer exists.
Those are all back up now and Mermaid is back under an hour, the only thing at DCA temporarily closed right now is Luigi's.

I'm starting to get more skeptical about the "understaffed" narrative. It may still be an issue to some extent, but it shouldn't be a primary driver of operational shortcomings anymore. They've been re-opened for well over a year and, with general economic conditions being poor, they should've been able to turn a corner on the labor issues by now.

This hasn't really been true anywhere. Lots of places still hiring and lots of open shifts being unfilled... Everywhere.

And we're not just talking about ride operators making close to minimum wage. You need machinists, sound, lighting and computer techs and procurement specialists (also note supply chain issues) and logistics too... Just to keep rides running.

Lightning in the area. Different from WDW, but due to the lack of covering, most outdoor Disneyland rides will shut down when there is lightning in the area.

Didn’t even know about the lightning, so I stand corrected. This is the day we went up to Universal, and all I saw was very light rain.

The pictures above reflect the Dumbo queue one afternoon this past week.

Trash was literally everywhere. The walkways in the park were no dirtier than usual, but the trash levels in the queues were obscene compared to past visits. It was really alarming.

I rope dropped Splash Mountain at 8 AM yesterday and saw a water bottle at the bottom of the first lift hill. I informed the ride attendant at the end of the ride, and he said he would get someone to take care of it. I rode it again at 9 PM with Genie+ and the bottle was still there - 11 hours after I informed the ride attendant. I’m not sure how other guests aren’t bothered by this, but it really takes away from the experience for me.

That being said, this is as much an indictment on the customer as it is Disney. Some popcorn that accidentally spills on Main Street? Ok, yeah, Disney needs to clean that up. And I didn’t see much of that.

But bottles, drink cups, chip bags, etc. thrown in the queue line? Yeah, Disney still needs to clean that… but I don’t get the type of person who throws their trash in the queue line rather than waiting until after the ride to dispose of it. I mean, you can’t take your Coke bottle onto Dumbo with you? Really? I imagine Disney was much cleaner once upon a time, but that’s a mix of Disney’s budget cuts as well as the general decay of social decency.

I bet you don't have teenagers. They are notorious for dropping things and not picking up after themselves. They are so used to other people picking up after them that the concept of "leave no trace" doesn't even enter their brains.

You should see the Knott's parking lot at the end of the day. It looks like there was a swap meeting regarding the amount of trash people dumped out of their car. I've seen them bring in street sweepers at the end of the night just to collect the trash. These are the kind of selfish people theme parks have to deal with.

These last two days, the wait times are unlike anything I’ve ever seen at Disneyland. Jungle Cruise is at 70 minutes. I thought that only happened at WDW. It seems that Genie+ has really done Disneyland wrong.

Welcome to the new Disneyland, what you describe is unfortunately the new normal.

Some days aren’t bad but 20-30 minute Genie/ILL lines with 1-2 hour standby lines are very common now. Genie+ has fundamentally changed how the parks operate.

For the first time in a decade we won’t be renewing our APs, until they get the reservations and Genie+ fixed it’s just not worth it.

I do not have teens, though I do recall being one not that long ago. Either teens are getting worse than when I was one, or Disney is getting worse (likely a mix of both). The trash situation has never been this bad, but I’ve only been going for 5 or so years.

What is the current mobile order situation like? Is it as terrible as people were saying when the parks first reopened?
I had no issues with mobile ordering. I love it and used it every time other than at Plaza Inn and the Tropical Hideaway (where it is not eligible). I never had a pickup timeframe more than 20 minutes from when I was ordering (for instance, if I began ordering at 6:00 PM, the latest I'd see is a 6:20 PM pickup time). Many times, the pickup window began immediately. Disney seems to have figured this one out.

Depends on day and time. My last couple of visits, when around 12pm I wanted to get something to eat, the nearest window at the places I wanted to go to was 2pm. So plan in advance or be willing to eat at your second or third choice location or at off hours.

Some places are quicker, but I've had bad luck at top choices lately.

Good to know, if not 100% reassuring.

Now if it says to pick up your food at a given time, is generally *actually ready at that time* or do you have to play the waiting game a bit more once your time comes?

This was not my experience at all, but I guess the moral of the story is YMMV.

On my last trip I found most places to have the food ready within a couple minutes of alerting them I was ready. The only place that took over 15 minutes was Lucky Fortune Cookery in DCA.

To be safe, I tend to hit "I'm here" upon being in eyesight of the location and then yes, can be anything from ready within a minute or so to up to ten minutes or so.

One hiccup I had was at Smokejumpers where I waited outside for 15 minutes, then got the "thanks for picking up your order" email while the app still said they were preparing my order! I went in really steamed that they charged me for something they didn't give me and they said since I hadn't come in to pick up my food, they closed out my order (and charged me). I then pointed out that my app still said it was being prepared as it had for the past 15+ minutes and then they looked sheepish and said oops, yeah the app does that sometimes and that if something takes more than 10 minutes I should always go to the counter and ask for it! They then told the kitchen to remake my order and gave it to me - which made me late to the next thing I wanted to get to.

Also ordered something at Pacific Wharf where "oops" they closed the ticket and charged me before telling me the food was prepared. So... bottom line - not the best food ordering method. :/ Be prepared for anything to go wrong though it only sometimes does.

I’ve found mobile order to be pretty reliable these days. We’re almost exclusively mobile ordering except for places that don’t offer it like Plaza Inn. Not like we have much of a choice. The places that do have registers have only one operating and the line just crawls. So yeah the food is ready instantly for the most part after you click “I’m here prepare my order.”
