Disney Store Employees

Last night I went to the Disney Store at the local mall. I asked the lady at the counter if she was a Cast Member. She rolled her eyes, laughed and said yes. I only thought the people at parks were called CM's. It turns out all Disney employees are. Just thought I'd let you all know.

 Yes anyone who works directly for the Walt DIsney company is a cast member because we all have a role in the show. Metaphorically and literally speaking.

All people employed by the Walt Disney Company are called cast members... even Eisner..

Give them a title rather than pay them a living wage. Disney, Wal-Mart and others have been doing this for many years. It works!

you are so annoying!

While that may or may not be true, Woody does have a point. It goes back to some Organizational Behavior and psychology studies that found if you changed what you call your employees they would feel as if they had a greater role in your company's overall success. The reality is that everyone is still an employee and while the names may be different from one organization to the next, the heirarchy, politics, and economics are all very similar.

I would have to agree with you. I also would like to add one point. While many companies don't pay a living wage, many people also don't know how to live within their means. Therefore it doesn't make a difference if Disney or Walmart were to pay 10 bucks an hour or not.

The real interesting thing is that people are willing to work for these wages even when there are better jobs available.

On top of that, they then stand around and complain about what they are being paid instead of going out and doing whatever it might take to pursue another job.

Especially interesting is the fact that people come to Disney to work thinking that it is the most perfect place in the world. Then after a short time they realize it is just like any other company with profits, losses, and policies and become dissolutioned.

Entertainment when you tear away all the glitz and glamour is simply the exploitation of human emotions in order to make a profit. Disney is a company that speacializes in family entertainment.

Duh! I know that people, however I am not synical, and I am sick and tired of people looking at the negative all the time.

I cannot stand the people that stand around and do not appreciate their job. I wish they would all leave! I left a job that paid twice the amount Disney does, chances are I could have made a career of it. But I choose to understand that there is a corporate side to Disney, but I do not let that get to me. My job is to hold the other side intact, the side of making people happy. And I do that. I don't gripe and moan about the money because there are plenty of other places to work with more money and less hassle. But I was never given the opportunity to make a memory for a family, for example. And that is not Disney smoke up my rear, I have done that, and I will continue to do that. That's what makes my job what it is... me! I make the personal decision to do the fun things. It makes no sense to not make much money and waste my day at work. It makes sense to make the decision that if I wanted just a job I oculd get elsewhere and earn more. But instead I choose to love my job and do everything I can to keep it that way. It's not Disney's fault if someone does not like working there, it's that person's perspective on things.

Well said!! I can’t tolerate negative people. I work in Human Resources as a recruiter and listen to it daily. So many people like to complain about everything. Low wages, hours, the corporate policies and procedures. I always tell them that if they are that unhappy they should look for another job. Why stick around if you dislike it that much. I’ll have no problem finding someone else to replace you.

you've never dealt with Disney as a CM i'm guessing. Disney makes you feel like you're a part of something much bigger than just you... so you are willing to put up with more than you would at another job.

I agree with you WDWFan to a certain extent. I do feel that if there is a big problem that a lot of CMs or employees are having a problem against that I think the company should be gracious enough to attempt to fix it, just as they would when a good number of guests or customers complain. A complaint is just a way of expressing what is wanted, if you listen hard enough. A company should do what it can, within reason, to make both it's external and internal customers happy.

With that said, to me the title of CM is not smoke up my rear. It's to help us get in the right mind set that a) we are putting on a show, which is true hospitality is really just entertainment and b) that I have a role, I have been given carte blanche to perform a manner that might be different than my normal day to day behavior, my role is to be a hostess to my guests and do my best to make their time with us incredible. To some that may be cheesy, but I feel great honor in knowing that i have the distinct power to make someone happy. How great is that? I have the ability to make another person feel an enjoyable emotion. I have chosen to keep that perspective in spite of what may happen in the corporate area. And I feel chances are I would feel that were I not named a CM. It does help, but I feel it is not done so in a cynical Mr. Burns-esque manner, remember Walt was the one who started the tradition of being called a Cast Member.

Only employees that work directly under the Walt Disney name are called Cast Members. These are employees with the Disney parks, The Disney Store, Feature Animation, Walt Disney Art Classics, Disney Channel, Disney On Ice, etc.

Disney owns tons of more companies that you probably don't even know about. Even though these other"tiers" of the company are still under one roof, the employees of them are not called CMs.

Some of these are: ABC and affiliates, Movies.com, Soap Net, Dimension Films, ESPN, Hyperion, Touchstone Pictures/Television, Hollywood Records, Discover, Miramax Films, X Games, Anaheim Angels, Mighty Ducks, The Baby Einstein Company, etc.

I was very proud to officialy become a Cast member at a Disney Store a few years ago when I came on board.

Ya I started my Disney career at Disney Store. I was a Lead. It was great aside from the crazy shipment we got during last year's holiday season and the fact that they closed us. We were one of the best stores, but because we were an old model they closed us and gave us two weeks notice... thank God I could get a job at WDW a few months later.
