Disney Raises Admission Price at California Theme Parks

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- It's going to cost more to see the Mouse.

Walt Disney Co. (DIS, news) raised the price of daily admission to its Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks by $2 on Monday, bringing the cost to $47.

The jump reflects increased operating and investment expenses, Disney officials said.

"We think the one-day admission price to our parks is well in line with the entertainment experiences our guests receive," said Tom Brocato, spokesman for the Disneyland Resort.

It was unclear whether other theme parks would follow Disney's lead.

"We have no plans to raise prices at this time, but we continuously monitor market conditions," said Eliot Sekular, a spokesman for Universal Studios Hollywood.

Disneyland has made price increases an annual event despite flagging theme park attendance. Disneyland admission prices have jumped 24% since 1998 while annual attendance has dipped by more than a million, according to industry estimates.

At the same time, Disney has relied on discounts to draw more local customers. Currently, Southern California residents who buy a full-priced ticket to one Disney park will receive a free ticket to the other for use by May 14.

Well, Disneyland has had a lot of deals for local Southern Californians, and maybe that's chipping a bit away at Disney's wallet... The reason for this...

>>>Still cheaper than Disney World<<<

That's why Disney has been so aggressive in raising prices at DLR. They would like for those parks to have the same admission as the parks in Florida. Having the same admission for the two resorts would also cut down on marketing costs by a good amount too.

Right. But it would just look bad rising the prices $5 overnight, so they have slowed down disney world's price increases while accelerating the increases at Disneyland (Disney World has been around $50 for a while...

$47 an increase?

Actually, the rise to $47 for two parks on two different days before May 14 is better than last year's deal.

In March 2002, I bought a $49 ticket that acted as a one day hopper pass. I think I could have also used the tickets as one day, one park passes up to 14 days after the first usage.
