Disney May Be Next in Line to Buy Warner Bros??

It's kind of hard to see how the government would allow such a merger. They've grown incredibly lax in their antitrust regulation (lots of cash and lobbying to blame mostly), but some mergers are too big even for today's regulators to allow to slip by.

Agreed. With Disney as already the world's largest entertainment company, acquiring another huge company (according to Wikipedia, "the world's largest film and television studio") screams antitrust.

Disney would have to buy out the dc comics contract from six flags to use them in their parks. It's left over from when Warner brothers used to own six flags.

Disney is about at a point where, with their tentpole strategy, there is little room left on the calendar for release dates. Disney buying Warner Bros. seems like it'd have to be a prestige purchase (just to say they now own whatever franchise) or a means of shutting down competition. Neither seems like the sort of thing Iger would go for since they're not about big, clear franchise growth.

I still find it interesting HS buses play harry potter music and ABC plays the movies.

I know it's a popular movie to show, but does inadvertantly advertise universals new expansion.
It's really nothing unusual. The networks also constantly buy shows produced by their competition.

The only way this happens is if the Time Warner CEO replaces Iger. The only Anti-Trust concern would be the number of cable channels, % of Cable spend, and the CW investment. DC/Marvel and Dis Channel/Cartoon Network wouldn't raise nearly the same level of concern that ppl think.

I think I may have figured this one a few months back when someone had mentioned that Disney might be buying another company. There was speculation it was TimeWarner. Could there be something of a monopoly on cartoon characters then? I'd imagine it will hit WDW the same way the Marvel thing did. Not allowed because they already have a presence (or did at one point) at Uni. Not helpful there but in the other parks...

However, the newer and self depricating Scooby Doo Mystery Inc.? (which was as good as some network prime time shows) I doubt Disney would've ever let that fly which is the down side (and a big one). They don't know what to do with Muppets (and let them languish when they never should have) so I don't know if this is such good news, if really thought about, to find out that they'll now own Loony Toons, Scooby, Jetsons, Flintstones, etc. Maybe with a new regime running things..but until then..I'm not enthused by this news. I'd expect those same properties to be pushed into the attic never to be seen again and that would be a shame.

I also do wonder if this did go through, They wouldn't have much to do with The Great Movie ride considering many of the films are under the WB Library of films...

Let's think about what really counts here.

Space Jam 2.

The pitch: LeBron James teams up with such stars as Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, and Captain America to fight off Thanos, Darth Vader, Emperor Zurg, Bad Pete, and a variety of masked villains from Scooby Doo.
I know this is only going further off topic but... you can still visit the original Space Jam website!

Roger Rabbit 2. Who remembers Roger Rabbit?

Thanks for that trip through time :)

Doubt it...if 20th Century Fox couldn't buy them out for 3 times the actual price, Disney would have to pony up a lot and I mean a lot more to get it.

It was a 25% premium. Also, this won't happen folks, despite surprisingly making sense. The deal is just way too huge and I can't see Disney going through with it.

The IP crossover possibilities are undeniably awesome from a fan perspective (Roger Rabbit), and could be quite profitable (Marvel/DC), but really, this isn't worth the money it would cost Disney. They'd have to take out a loan worth about 1/3 of the combined company's value. I'm not a businessman, but that doesn't sound appealing to me. It might be possible (Fox is worth far less than Disney), but Iger's moves have been relatively small and calculated.

CNN adds some serious value to Disney's cable arsenal, but other than that and DC (which I think is probably a bit overvalued in the wake of Marvel's recent success), there really isn't a ton here that screams long-term profitability.

Note that the original article doesn't specifically say Disney has an interest in this acquisition, just that it along Apple and Google, could be possible candidates.

Take what the Hollywood Reporter says with a grain of salt. There was a time that they and Variety were the bibles of the entertainment business, but that's long gone.

I know that I've posted a little about this in the past, but what the heck, I'll throw it all out there with more detail. Both Google and Apple have had extensive due diligence periods with the books at CBS. Both of the companies have been gunning for CBS for quite some time and things had gotten close multiple times from my real sources (not those make 'em up online ones :)) and there was a move to rush along the latest union negotiations in order to have those issues settled for a potential buyer.

Both Google and Apple want significant content and that's where CBS comes into play. Internally, employees want one company over the other.. hands down. I'll put it this way, Apple is not even close to being the preferred future owner. More like fear over Apple. The inside view is that Google will spend and even beef up the news division and that would lead us down the road of CBS finally acquiring CNN as well. We'll see. A lot has been done over a period of time here and it will take Moonves and Redstone to decide to sell this wing of CBS. Remember that Viacom split into multiple companies and they divided up the assets where basically all the CBS labeled properties stayed with CBS Corp., but the Paramount film wing went over to the "new" Viacom. CBS has an extensive catalog of owned television properties and that includes many shows that have been broadcasted on other networks (e.g. 'Fraiser' ran on NBC, but was a CBS Studios property) and they all play into the owning content agenda of both of the companies.
