Disney Fake Rocks. What are your favourites? No seriously.

I love the landscaping at disney parks and Im sure others do but we never discuss it.

The thing that has me most excited about the d23 annoucements are all those beautiful geyser rocks and snow capped mountians of Piston Peak. Walking alongside these along with the BTM rocks on the other side of the path I think I will be in heaven.

So what are your favourites?

Currently I think mine has to be Pandora. It makes the whole land utterly awesome to spend time in due to the rocks and those awesome slushies on a hot day.

Btm and galaxy edge also are utterly awesome. What are your favourites?

At other theme parks I would go Paris BTM and Tokyo Disneys Fantasy Springs. Boy that place is fake rock heaven. Especially the Beauty and the Beast Rocks.

And which dont you like? Tianas brocoli rocks? The polynesian waterslide park volcano rocks that looked like poo? I love the disney fake rocks but there are some real nasties too when not done right.

That's a broad statement, right? You don't think there's a range, as there is in all other things among twelve theme parks around the world? Isn't there better or worse Disney rock work just like there's better or worse Disney attractions, parades, foods, etc.?

They can say what they like as it's subjective, however I'd imagine they are in the minority. They weren't happy with the Rock work at Galaxy's Edge and somewhere else in Disney World, they didn't mention other Disney parks as far as I can recollect and just specifically talked about Walt Disney World. It wasn't ranging it as much as an out and out dislike about it seemingly. As I read the first post on here describing Galaxy's Edge as having awesome rock work, it reminded me of them being critical of it.

I believe they were being critical of the fact that there are no real mountains there but instead blocks of rock behind buildings that look like mountains in the background or words to that effect. Again if they're unhappy about the fact then they're unhappy about it and they can say so. As I say rock work and it's presentation is not something that I think many people are critical of about Disney World and it just struck me as odd that something most agree that they're good at was now the target of a particular poster.

Then again if they don't like it, they don't like it. It wasn't a comment about the shading of Big Thunder Mountain being better than Taina's or a comparison between one being marginally better. It was more a general dislike of the way the rock work is limited and placed differently in more recent times.

I don't see it that way myself and was commenting on it and as this thread is specifically about how fantastic the rock work is at Disney World I thought it was worth mentioning that some don't agree. Perhaps they'll post about it on this thread and give their argument more meat to it than I have and you'll get a better idea of their opinion.

Flashback to my 9th grade earth science class…definitely Pandora…I would also add Everest if it weren’t for that pesky strobe light…we can hope…

Thanks, and I'm not defending any other poster's positions specifically. I'm defending the "right" so to speak of posters to have critical opinions about different Disney rock work, just as they do about everything else. I see people criticize a cocktail at Geo 82 or a Halloween parade that will be over in a few weeks, with no pushback. And then someone criticizes rock work made (or going to be made) of steel and plaster that could be there 50 years and people are like "you're nitpicking!" It's funny. And it's unfortunate if rock work is something you care about and want to discuss.

And none of that takes away -- in my opinion -- from believing Disney is absolutely the best in the industry at rock work. They are without peer, in my opinion. But even my favorite bands have better or worse albums, if that analogy makes sense.

Not sure who “they” is but there is no place in galaxies edge that impresses me the way avatar and cars land does. That’s not to say the rock work in galaxies edge is bad - but the original concept art seemed to focus on more elaborate rocks.

It makes perfect sense. It came across not as much as "I prefer this to that" but rather "Disney rock work is awful now". Not in those exact words but it didn't feel like a comparison between two things that are good, with one being favoured over the other. It felt more like "Disney's rock work isn't good anymore".

MK Thunder for me. More than just a rock wall it looks like an actual mountain. Great colour too.


There is too much rockwork nowadays though.
New Fantasyland? Rocks.
Star Wars? Rocks.
Avatar? Rocks.
Cars? Rocks.
Fantasy Springs? Rocks.
Mermaid, Snow, Moana, Frozen, Tangled, Peter Pan: rocks.

What happened to the old art of dressing your show buildings as quaint European villages or exotic tropical locales?
