Disney confirms 'Frozen' makeover coming to Epcot's Norway Pavilion

The fact they had to REPLACE Maelstrom to put in a Frozen ride is lazy and greedy. You've got plenty of room to do the ride somewhere else and you'd have pretty universal happiness. (Pun intended?)

What bothers me is maelstrom is a decent ride people like AND there is a whole section of land between Norway and Mexico they could have extended the Norway pavilion built and entirely new ride AND make it the size something as popular as frozen needed to be. There is no way they can make the maelstrom footprint big enough for a frozen ride....and riding in a boat instead of a sled?

A Poppins ride would be fine in the UK, as the movie is actually set there, but, like having Aladdin in Morocco, having Arrendale in Norway just diminishes the real country.

it's actually kinda racist to just lump everyone from a vague geographic region into one land. I know most Americans don't have a clue what the difference is between Norway, Sweden, Finland etc., but that lumping all foreigners into the same pot shouldn't be encouraged.

Imagine if the American pavilion had a New York ride, but it got replaced by a Gotham City Batman ride. How would that feel?

I really hope you weren't just referring to me as being racist. I hope that comment was referring to Disney or the Original comment on ALaddin in Morocco.
I'm one of the first people that looked and said WTH is Aladdin doing in Morrocco?!? (I'm an historian and very particular on cultures being preserved). If you read back in the thread you will see me wigging out about them screwing up the cultural effects of Norway pavilion by doing this Frozen crap. If you want to go to war over cultures, Aladdin should be in China (he's historically Chinese), though the story setting is Syrian/Arabic. My only guess (head scratching at that...is the reason Disney put him in Morocco is it's a French written book).

Um. No one is sponsoring Norway now, so yeas, Disney is going to make make money. Plus, Maelstrom wasn't very good. , and the Princesses should have been a clue that the Norway areas was open territory. Would rather have unique cultural experiences, yes, but frankly most guests don't care if they have a fun time. At least it's a ride and not another food option, and hopefully the trend will continue as far as the castle, etc go - each new tentpole movie has it's temporary spotlight.

That said, We're going in december, and my daughter is flat out going to burst with all of this. So to heck with all the grumps, we're going to have a great trip:)

They might as well just rename the park to "Disney's Florida Adventure"...it's pretty much steering far away from the original concept (even the watered down version of what walt envisioned).

Destroying a country's culture through branding and fiction is going to do nothing for these pavilions. Do they need to make the countries more accessible for the general public? Yes. More exciting? Yes. But totally re-imaging a country into a fictional cartoon scenario is beyond insulting to both the original country as well as the patron who wants to enjoy the closest they can get to a plane ticket to said destination.

This belongs in MK and DHS, and nowhere else in Florida.

Glad to see @Macdaddy1717 was right that this is not happening...

Does anyone want to try and tell us how a snack counter still means there will be lots of Norway left in the pavilion?

Imagine if the American pavilion had a New York ride, but it got replaced by a Gotham City Batman ride. How would that feel?
It would more have to be a ride based on aFrench film inspired by a Mexican story that is set in something sort of like the southwestern US being used to represent American culture.

Maybe I'm just looking through my rose colored glasses but I choose to wait and see for myself. I discovered Disney later in life and didn't grow up going to the world. Because of that I don''t have a love affair with Maelstrom and If TDO decides to put their money towards a good refresh it could be real nice. On the other hand it could be awful! All we can do is wait and see...

Personally i'm looking forward to the Frozen re-theme. I realize it's not very fitting with the focus of Epcot's world showcase but having ridden the attraction recently It honestly just felt tired, outdated and to be completely honest kinda boring. As for the meet and greet, that was going to happen either way so there's no sense in arguing or complaining about it. Anna and elsa in Norway is no different than Snow White in Germany, Jasmin and Alladin in Morocco or Alice and Mary Poppins in Great Britain,

Yes, it will. Snow White is one of the Grimm Brothers fairy tale and those fairy tale have played a huge role in German history and were part of our culture for a long time, the Grimm Brothers just collected those tales that were passed on from generation to generation by retelling them. Frozen is based on a fairy tale that was written and invented by a Danish (not Norwegian!) author - Denmark being the country that governed Norway for 400 years in a way that most Norwegians did not approve of.

I agree, I find it rather ignorant and culturally insensitive to have a pavilion named after one country but using it instead to promote your own American version of a fairy tale from an author that is from a neighbouring country.

Are the Norwegian tourism boards being ignorant and culturally insensitive too? They seem to be happy with using Frozen as a hook to drum up tourism to their country:

This is exactly what I am talking about. The first nail has yet to be driven and you are already assuming that Frozen will be of lesser quality than Maelstrom.

You know, it's very possible that Frozen could be a great ride. But nostalgia holds a lot of value (admittedly, not with the younger ones) and it's hard to get past that.

Looking at Disney's recent efforts, there's about a 50% chance that this ride could be done well. That doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence. If what we've been hearing (about the redo being a cheap one) is true, than that just diminishes confidence further.

Does anyone realize Maelstrom is one of the worst rated attractions at "WDW"? It also has some the least requests for FP+. This one change will drive attendance to Epcot like never before, and update attraction which is quite frankly horrible. Not sure what a very minimal group is holding onto?

I'm sure @WDW1974 will make a point of this, but it is very telling that they are releasing this on a Friday aka bury it in the news cycle. You would think that they would put this out earlier in the week to bolster excitement. They must know that this will not be a universally popular decision, upsetting the diehard WDW fans.

The Maelstrom redo into Frozen could be the greatest attraction Disney has ever created - but it still wouldn't fit thematically in World Showcase. Of course, it isn't even likely to be a 'good refresh'; More likely, a quick and cheap overlay.
