In fairness, this has to be treated as a major creative win for Disney despite Sony’s ownership of the IP. Feige and, less directly, everyone who has built the MCU made this film - we know what Sony produces when left to its own devices (absent the exceptional skill of Lord and Miller).

If the question is how much money will Disney earn from this, we can pick apart the deal. But that’s not very interesting. If the issue is whether Disney can produce big, crowd-pleasing entertainment for a wide audience, BND should silence some folks for a bit. It won’t, of course.

It makes you wonder why they haven't built more IMAX screens (even the light version). I understand that the 70mm ones aren't likely to be built because of the issue with the projectors. But they should at least upgrade more of the existing theaters to the light version like AMC uses.

I think just the usual calculation then divide the inevitable profit by 4 to assign to Disney. Which ironically still might be a pretty significant amount compared to most of their films. 46M for Disney and counting heading out of the weekend.

There will be some outside indirect benefit due to their access to the streaming rights and merchandising, but still that seems an ok starting place.

It's simple and elegant, and easy on the math, so I love it!

Its gonna end up being a couple hundred million, at least.

So that will likely wipe out almost all of their underperformers for the year like Moana.

This begs the question... Why did Burbank have to let Sony make this instead of keeping it in house? I'm assuming that if I went to Google for 8 seconds there would be some decades-old agreement that Spiderman isn't included in the Marvel deal or something? Seems silly, doesn't it?

Burbank spent Billions to buy Marvel. Why wouldn't it include Spiderman?

As for "Disney" being able to make big, crowd-pleasing entertainment for a wide audience, that has never been doubted if Disney can stick to its core principles that made it into a global family brand and American icon.

This latest Spiderman seems to have escaped the drama and discourse that dragged at least a half-decades worth of big budget family movies down into the $5 clearance bin at WalMart; Strange World, Indy 5, Wish, Lightyear, The Marvels, Star Wars Whatever, Rachel Zegler's Snow White, Elio, etc., etc.

Bravo to Sony for getting Spiderman to the American multiplex without the too-usual Burbank drama attached!

First Disney isn't outsourcing anything, if Disney could they would bring Spider-Man 100% back fully under Marvel control. Its only because of the contract that Sony even has the film rights to Spider-Man.

Second Sony hasn't really truly been a good steward of the Spider-Man franchise. Outside of Spider-Man himself all other attempts to create their own Spider-Man universe (which includes potentially hundreds of characters) has mostly fallen flat on its face, ie Sony has lost money on all other attempts.

So the relationship right now is beneficial for both parties. Sony gets to latch onto the power of the MCU and Disney/Marvel gets to use Spider-Man within the MCU. Both get to reap the financial benefits of that relationship. And Disney/Marvel does have some creative input into the movies, and there are strict controls over the Spider-Man character at Marvel. So your joke aside, that same strict controls would still apply even if Disney took full control.

Lastly the rumors have been the Sony might be looking to give up control of Spider-Man back to Marvel in the long term, as again outside of the direct Spider-Man movies they haven't been able to get anything else going. So for now they'll keep pumping out the Spidey movies, but long term they may look to give that up.

We saw Spider Man last night.

It was fine. Not mind blowing. Other than hype and enjoying previous movies, I do not understand why this does this much better than Superman, etc. It was fine. Nothing bad to say. I think I liked all previous Spidey movies better.

I think people just love Spider-man himself. I though Superman (2025) was a better movie, but I personally am more attached to the Peter Parker character.

I look at it as with Spider-Man, many fans have grown up now with the Tom Holland version and have wanted to see him turn into adult Peter in the MCU, and this is the first film where they get to see that, so its a continuation of that.

Superman subverted many fans expectations with a major tonal shift in the character, I used him yelling an Lois as an example back when it was released, Superman just doesn't do that. Plus it shoved way too many side characters that didn't need to be in it for a Superman movie, the focus should be Superman only not the side quests of the budget Justice League. Plus not to mention the whole Synderverse of it all, many felt it was too much of a slight to Snyder by too quickly rebooting the character.

Eh, I don’t think Corenswet was better than Cavil, or even Routh for that matter. In my opinion he is last in his portrayal of the character, so again I think it came down to too much of a tonal shift in the character and too soon after the Synderverse for the character to have been rebooted, that is why it didn’t do as well as it should have.

Buddy is still running with this gag... promoting as a kids show. While creative, as I've said before, they're missing their target audience / (horror) fans.
Not everyone keeps up with online news, and instead go straight by what they see on TV commercials. I'm still thinking this "joke" is gonna make this horror movie flop hard.
