Disney’s Tangled Passes $100 Million in Domestic Box Office Receipts

Earlier this week Disney announced their 50th animated feature "Tangled" passed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. Following its successful Thanksgiving debut, "Tangled" became Walt Disney Studios 68th title to reach this milestone. In addition, "Tangled" is the only film this year to earn an A+ CinemaScore, the highest rating to be given by moviegoing audiences.
“With its creative storytelling and lovable characters, "Tangled" is the sort of cinematic adventure that makes Disney films so appealing to audiences of all ages,” said Rich Ross, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “We’re so thrilled that audiences love it as much as we do, and we’re looking forward to a great run through the holiday season.”
"Tangled" has already opened in approximately 35% of the international marketplace and has taken in more than $56M. In Russia, Tangled had the biggest animated opening in Disney’s history and has become Disney’s biggest animated film of all time in the region.

I'm happy for Tangled to find its market and draw critical acclaim, but it is the only movie of the year to earn an A+ CinemaScore?

There was this little movie named "Toy Story 3" . . .

Pretty good for this film, it is up to 191 worldwide with a budget of 260. Hopefully it makes 300 worldwide.

Got to $100million alot faster than Princess and the Frog

A big part of that is due to the release date. PatF was released in December in an effort to capture a bigger Christmas break audience. It was a bad decision. Thanksgiving has long been the time to release family films--for good reason. The release date experiment coupled with the steamroller of Avatar hurt PatF more than anything else.

That did not help, but is it any coincidence that princess and the frog is still available on Netflix's Instant View? There have a bunch of Pixar and Disney movies on there, but they usually aren't on there that long.

I haven't monitored exact availability lengths, but I did watch "UP" about a week ago and that came out long before PatF.

I think the availability issue has more factors than box office. I think Disney considers merchandising, how a movie will affect park visits, public interest, how it might affect other movies, and their relationship with Netflix.

Maybe it is still on Netflix, because it is doing well and Netflix wants to keep it to lure people to the service. Maybe they are hoping it will be watched by those that missed it in theaters as they get interested in Tangled. Maybe it strikes a certain nostalgic cord amongst viewers and they want to visit a park after watching it. Maybe it is helping the DVD sales. Or maybe it is just being dumped there.

I don't know what the motivation is, but I am certain of one thing Disney has analyzed the numbers every way possible and is maximizing the revenue.
