Minor, but important news:

For those not following, the rise of the omicron variant rendered much of our national stock of monoclonal antibody cocktails useless . Of the three approved treatments, only sotrumivab showed efficacy against omicron, and unfortunately, our reserves and manufacturing capacity for this one were the lowest of the three. We've been playing catch-up ever since, and had to strictly ration what supplies of sotrumivab were available. I don't doubt that at least part of the reason why the death count has been so high with omicron was because people who previously could have been saved by a monoclonal antibody infusion now couldn't get one.

So, it's good to have bebtelovimab on board now, although like any new therapeutic, it will take awhile before they can ramp up production enough to start relieving some of the current supply shortages.
Maybe just in time for it to be rendered ineffective against the next variant.

And what's the status of the oral treatments? Are those available to average schlubs yet?

That’s one of my gripes about environmental regulations, globally it doesn’t do any good, might even do more damage, to restrict manufacturing here and then shift production to places that pollute at a higher rate than we did. Makes for nicer air and trees locally though.

This was one of our biggest shocks our first trip to Europe, their portion sizes are tiny compared to ours, I rarely clean my plate in America but in Europe a nightly fast food stop is common for us (to get some fries or something) because we are still hungry after dinner.

My pint sized girlfriend almost always orders off the kids menu in America but had to actually order an adult meal in Europe.
I do the same here with the kids menu. Very few places offer something thats small enough on the adult menu. Or I split though with my 14yo out eating me, I have less who I can split with.

It resolved quickly last year when they removed the masks for a month…
It actually took a few weeks after USF announced for Disney to. USF dropped end of May. Disney didn't announce until June 11th for a 15th removal.

I'm not shocked by that. With Omicron a milder variant, I'm sure a higher number of people are going about life unaware they even have it.
My wife was in the hospital last week, came back and has been feeling like she's dragging.
She took a home covid test, yesterday and she's positive.
She then swabbed me, and I'm positive.
I feel no symptoms.
I went for a walk around the reservoir yesterday, and I'm going for a bike ride today.
I can only imagine how many other people are out there who are positive but feel no symptoms.

This number has gotten higher and higher over the past couple of weeks.

It was originally 50% for NON covid, now its over 60%

A month ago it was at 564 Patients with 53%.
I haven't really been following this thread since omicron because when I saw the data from South Africa and how contagious it was and more importantly how it generally only was in the upper respiratory system (not in the lungs which was where most of the long covid stuff came from) I pretty much realized it was effectively over except for the die hards.

I did catch it late December from others, only even knew I had it because I tested, I was completely asymptomatic. (Vaccinated, but no boosters)

The supply of the oral treatments, unfortuantely, is still pretty limited and nowhere near the need.

At least the infusions have a longer window of efficacy and almost no contra-indications. Paxlovid is a powerful oral drug, but you only have a 5 day window once symptoms begin and it has a ton of contra-indications. I'm also hearing that it has some rather unpleasent but benign side effects.

My hair stylist is a public face for the shop and required to test for something. That's how they found out they were positive. Did sleep a lot but mostly sat at home working on the business side of things. Hope your wife feels better soon.

A good friend of mine realizes we all likely have really been exposed if not had it and didn't realize it. We just didn't test. This comes from a person who is uber cautious and always trying to be good about things. On the more cautious side. Was interesting to think about.

I haven't been in the schools this calendar year (missed a meeting for a blood draw last month and volunteer stuff is not until Monday) but I'm always out and about and I was at the school a lot through end of 2021. I don't even wear special masks. Of course not all of us exposed will get it too especially if vaccinated but if we do, it isn't impossible to be asymptomatic. Though for schools here we'd be asked to stay home for 5 days... I think? I personally would use it as an excuse to stay home lol

I guess the magic bands really do make it easier to spend money without noticing because we were just there in November and I didn’t even notice, and we got them both days we were at MK.

If they ever bring back the buffalo chicken spring rolls they can charge whatever they want and I’ll pay it, I only had them once a few years ago and I still hope they’ll be at the cart every time we go, haven’t been lucky yet but fingers crossed.
It's like gambling with chips instead of cash at the casino!

Thank you.
My wife is good now.
She "gets everything," if you will. If it's going around, she catches it.
But she's fine today. She's a director of nursing for an assisted living facility, so obviously she'll be staying away from the job next week.
She's been a bit exhausted anyway, studying for a new level of certification at her job, and taking a course to be a certified yoga instructor.
She's kind of happy to get a break.

Glad she is good now! I hope she enjoys the week vacation so to speak. Good luck to her with the certification and such too.

If it is, then it is but the scientific consensus is that viruses tend to mutate in a way that makes them less virulent over time.

That is absolutely not the scientific consensus, that is the Internet consensus.

The scientific consensus is that virus mutations are random, more transmissible varients will outcompete less transmissible varients, and severity is random. A new Varient can be more or less severe. Delta was both more transmissible and more severe than Alpha.

Were you at work yesterday? I'm curious what percentage of casino patrons still wore masks after it wasn't required.

I worked a small concert last night and of the 700 or so guests I’d guesstimate maybe 2 dozen masks total, of the 20 or so staff I noticed 3 who were still wearing them.

The bandage is officially off, it’ll be interesting to see if our quickly decreasing case counts level off a bit over the next couple weeks or if they continue to drop like a rock.

All of which were likely over the age of 5 and able to be vaccinated. It still feels a bit odd to me for crowded places geared towards families with little kids, like WDW, to just let it rip.

How many do you think will say they are not vaccinated? 🙂

I’m sure they know that will happen. Their choices are

1) require masks for all
2) require masks for none
3) check vaccine cards
4) require masks for unvaccinated knowing most will lie but a few might wear them.

They likely don’t want to staff for checking cards I'm not even sure if that’s legal in FL.

That doesn’t leave many options.
