Connecting Rooms - book on same reservation or not?

Plan on going to the Wilderness Lodge again this August......but this time we might have 3 adults and 2 kids. So obviously we'd need 2 rooms.

I've heard to increase the chances of getting connecting rooms, it's best to book both on the same reservation under the same name? Is this true?

Also, I'm assuming rooms need to be the same type.....for example we'd never get a bunk bed room and a non-bunk room next to each other?

EDIT: And, if I book both on the same reservation.....do all 5 people get access to both rooms on the MagicBands? Or does Disney force me to choose who is in each room?

Thanks!!

We always have 2 connecting rooms at Port Orleans Riverside. We have 4 adults and 2 kids. The reservations are always separate. One in my name ,one in my adult daughters name. We have never had a problem getting the connecting rooms. The magic bands only open one room, you tell them who is in each room, but we leave the connecting door open and unlocked the whole time so we can come and go as we please. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming you call up and tell Disney about the 2 reservations so they know to try to get you connecting rooms? Or are you making the bookings during the same time?

I've never made 2 bookings at the same time as in the past the other person going has always made their own reservation....and then we'd call Disney and have them note the 2. But this year I noticed when pricing online that if I choose 3 adults 2 kids at the Wilderness, essentially it's forcing me into 2 rooms. But I didn't go any further....so I have no idea once I start booking if they both go under my name, or if I choose who is in each.

Yes we call Disney and request the connecting rooms and tell them we want to put them under separate reservations. We give them separate credit card info for each room down payment. Then you can finish paying for each reservation later. You do give them the names on each reservation but who actually stays in each room once you get there doesn't really matter. I believe you could put both rooms under your name with just 1 reservation but I have never done it this way. You can link everything which ever way you do it under the Disney experience app, Fast pass, meals etc
