Monday March 13th - Recap and Synopsis

Starting off with our trusty map drawn by @kap91
img_3024-jpg.193214

The last few days have seen an explosion of different ideas and concepts. While that's great - it can also be a bit confusing (even to me..and I'm the one writing the recap:p)

If it wasn't clear - the objective of this project is "Blue Sky"

Meaning in this case, that the project as a whole can veer more on the side of armchair imagineering and less on the side of a current day WDI budgeted land. After the land is assembled and pieces begin to come together - that is when we can talk about the realism factor, but until then -- again -- everything is blue sky.

With that said -- this infers that if you have an idea for an IP listed above, or one of the surrounding mini-lands -- feel free to chime in and even go as far as to begin working on the concept yourself! The more finished/semi-finished concepts we have, the easier it will be to assimilate them all into one cohesive land, rather than attempt to create the entire land first and then build the individual pieces.

There are 3 other brainstorming threads focusing on different aspects of the project already up on the forum.

Fantasia Castle and the surrounding area
Beauty and the Beast area
Villains Mini-Land

Those can be found if you just scroll through the Imagineer forum home page.

As of now, these are the tallies of attractions and the people commenting on either the threads themselves and/or posting a keen interest in these concepts on the lounge thread here. These are not final, and can change based on interest/activity, but just scrolling through the threads...

I would just like to reiterate that since this is a blue sky project -- I think our attention should be less focused on where these attractions, shows, asthetics "fit" in the land, but rather and attempting to design and create immersive singular experiences, that when assembled together could be something special.

The less time we spend worrying about "this won't fit" "we can't include this" -- the better. We'll focus on that during the final phases of the project.

For now -- let's have today focus on brainstorming the specifics about these attractions, our goals and aspirations for them, encourage each other to pursue them, and go from there!:) Later on today I will make the recap thread and post this at the top of it, but for now I'm just going to post it here and then tag the people involved in chunks so you can pick up here today!

Phew, I've just caught up. Work's been busy this weekend, I won't be able to make any real contributions until Tuesday night, but I'll chime in with a few things.
  1. Its late, but I also vote Fantasia for the castle. I'm happy to see that most of you agreed with this :p
  2. I think Space hit it on the head with how to proceed with the project. Comparing this to my architecture degree, the creative process is pretty similar. We start with a blue sky phase, where anything is possible and your mind can run wild, and then you start adding in realistic constraints. In my opinion, having a few constraints and limitations leads to the best outcomes. Thinking creatively about how to satisfy and work around constraints produces such interesting results, that you just don't get on a blank slate project. An example of this is B&M inverted coasters. Compare Tatsu at Six Flags Magic Mountain with Nemesis at Alton Towers. Sure, Tatsu is a great ride, it's tall, has some fun elements etc... but Nemesis is consistently voted among the best coasters in the world. Why? Because of its constrains and limitations. At Alton Towers, rides cannot be built above the treeline for planning purposes, so to compensate, Nemesis was dug down into a pit. The close passes and terrain interaction are what make the ride great, and that would likely never have happened without those planning restrictions. I'm not saying we should go that extreme, but I'm also against the project being purely blue sky for its duration. At some point, we should incorporate some real-world considerations to make the project interesting and believable.
  3. Considering the fact that we're looking at transitional mini-lands between the main lands, I'd be in favour of at least experimenting with a ring layout over the traditional hub and spoke design. A castle park around a central lake could be really interesting!
  4. When it comes to it, I'm really looking forward to working on the World's Fair land, that sounds amazing, and right up my alley!

Thanks for this reminder @spacemt354 . I know that it helps to have deadlines, but one of the "advantages" (for me) of this forum versus the competitions is that we don't have the deadlines requiring us to work 17 hours straight (like I did on a recent project). I've got a blue sky idea I'd like to pursue regarding Beauty and the Beast, which I will post on that thread.
