Once upon a time back in the day, M. Night Shyamalan used to make good movies. Yes, I know it has not happened in quite awhile, and things seem to have gone from bad to worse with Mr. Shyamalan's work. But back in his glory days he actually had some pretty outstanding projects. The two films that stand out for most people are: Signs and The Sixth Sense.

-One is about a global alien invasion.
-One is about spirits living amongst us.
-Both included popular one-liners:
Signs: "There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?"
Sixth Sense: "I see dead people."
-Both are very suspenseful in their own respect, and have still remained timeless thrillers to this day.

But which one is the better and why? Let the battle of aliens & ghosts commence!

One Little Spark...
I didn't like either movie very much (I know, blasphamy)...

Gotta go with Sixth Sense, just because of the twist at the end.

Signs had great tension and action scenes, but some of the plot points were just really bad (like...aliens stumped by a door)...

That would be The Sixth Sense. Signs was good but The Sixth Sense beats it in storyline, characters, acting (though Signs had it down for all of these as well). What a surprise performance by Donnie Walhberg.

Spoilers:

Am I the only one who knew Bruce Willis' character was dead the entire time?

I didn't know, but at the beginning of the scene following the one where he's been shot, I turned and whispered, "Is he dead?" because I was with someone who'd seen it.

I watched the whole movie wondering if he was dead or alive, but figured he must be dead during the scene in the shop.

It wasn't genius on my part. I've just watched too many supernatural/Sci-FI things in my day to assume that seeing a character means they're alive, lol.

Didn't see Signs and can't vote, dang it.

Lol, "Is he dead?" That's hilarious!

I saw The Sixth Sense when it first came out, so that means I was seven. When he got shot, as a kid, I automatically thought he was dead, because, like most seven year-olds think, everyone who gets shot dies. As the movie kept going, I noticed no one was paying him any attention, besides the boy who could see ghosts... Ding, ding, ding! That confirmed it for me.

Maybe if I had first seen it as an adult I wouldn't have caught it. The power of a little kid's mind.

Having seen & enjoyed both films, I had a hard time picking a favorite this time around. I ultimately went with Signs. It certainly wasn't perfect, and had it's plot loopholes ( @englanddg , your comment about the aliens & doors made me laugh out loud ). But it is true though. If the creatures could travel across the galaxy, build such technology to enter our atmosphere & create those crop circles...then why are doors & glasses of water such a severe hurdle??

But overall I enjoyed the way it built up suspense from the start; gave that sense of dread of things to follow. It also had some pretty funny scenes that didn't interfere with the mood (ex: Mel Gibson running around the house shouting: "I'm insane with anger!!"). That got the biggest audience laugh from the theater I was in, and still makes me chuckle to this day.
So overall, I thought the film did a good job of taking the fun topic of crop circles & turning it into an exciting thriller. Not that there's much to dislike about The Sixth Sense, and it certainly did not lose my vote by a big margin.

Sadly, I knew the twist ending before getting to see the film (thanks to a friend). :( It didn't ruin it for me, and I still enjoyed everything leading up to it despite knowing what was to come. But I certainly wish I had been surprised like everyone else.

Aw, that sucks. Something like that happened to me, in high school. I was in art class during summer school, and The Dark Knight had been released, but I hadn't seen it yet because every time I tried, tickets were always sold out. Anyways, I'm working on my project, and I overhear two guys talking about the movie. They were talking about Harvey Dent later in the movie becoming Two-Face. I was so angry!

I had the 6th Sense spoiled for me before I saw it, but knowing the plot twist didn't take anything away from the film. The scene's impact on me was just as strong as the person next me who didn't know Bruce was dead. The ending of Signs doesn't hold up as well for me now that I know how it ends. Repeat viewing of The 6th Sense doesn't lead to me nitpicking like I do with Signs. Why are they invading a planet that is covered with something they are deathly allergic to?!

Another thing I like about Signs is the musical score. Sure, it wasn't the most epic score out there, but it built suspense and fit perfectly with the film (imo). Just those few notes played over & over again somehow did the trick, and gave the story enough without going overboard.
M. Night Shyamalan originally wanted NO background musical score the film. I'm glad he changed his mind.
