Celebrating your unbirthday?

So we are planning a trip starting this Jan 1st. Our son will turn 1 1/2 (18 months) while we are there. He didn't have much if a 1st Bday at home because he has had so many problems with milk and starting food He is eating everything now and really took off recently with no problems. We were hoping we could get a small cake and ice cream and celebrate at Chef mickeys for him turning 1 1/2. Anyone celebrated their unbirthday before? I'm thinking Disney won't care, but you can tell he doesn't look exactly 1 or 2.

A CM once explained Disney's very strict rules for celebrating birthdays in the World...

If your birthday falls within six months, one way or the other [give or take a few days], you can wear a Birthday button and celebrate. Otherwise, it's not permitted! ;)

There's just no place like Disney! Thank you

Personally, if your birthday falls within a few weeks or a month of the trip, I see no problems wearing a birthday button and adding that it's your birthday onto your ADR's. But if your birthday is in October and you're vacationing in March and saying it's your birthday in March I think that A - that's dishonest to say it's your birthday and B- not setting a good example for your kids (if you have any). Again, just my opinion though. I would never let my kids wear a button there if it wasn't within a week or two of their birthday.

I agree. I realize my opinion is stick-in-the-mud-ish compared with the majority view on here, but we're raising our kids to understand that telling a lie to get a "perk" is wrong, no matter how small the lie or big the advantage. We'll celebrate our daughter's [legitimate] birthday on our upcoming trip, but only on that day. We'll also get our son a special souvenir or something to make him feel equally special on his sister's birthday, but we don't expect Disney to bridge that gap, or to aid us in a fake celebration of a fake event. Stolen magic is no magic at all.

I agree too. I'm not looking for any free perks and we wouldn't be celebrating the entire trip. I would also never teach my kids to lie just to get cake if you were refering to my post. I was only looking to do something special on that day because we never had a bday cake or anything at 1. This is a real celebration for us.

Oh no, I was not referring specifically to your post! There was a recent thread in which several members were crowing about all of the free cupcakes and other "swag" they'd gotten by celebrating "unbirthdays" and other non-events at WDW. I had some of their accounts in mind.

Oh okay, sorry. Yes I don't think that's right either.

I'm sure most would agree that it's tacky to wear a Birthday pin whenever for the freebies. But, you can celebrate anything you'd like at WDW. They promote that. You can celebrate Monday if you'd like. Or Tax Day. Or the end of Daylight Saving Time. Whatever you'd like. As long as you aren't purportedly doing so for a free Hostess-quality carrot cake.

But that's the thing, people are wearing their birthday button's for free desserts and perks. And to me, and hopefully to most people, that's not right. It's one thing to wear your button if you are there for your birthday week. That's fine. Everyone deserves to be celebrated on their birthday. I just hope that it doesn't get to the point where everyone and their mother is wearing birthday buttons for free desserts just so they don't have to pay for it! You can celebrate anything you want, but birthday buttons get the free desserts, don't you know? ;)

And I can't say I have never celebrated my birthday in WDW when it really wasn't my birthday. I have before. In 2011 we were really visiting on my mother's birthday but since my birthday falls during the Christmas holiday and my sister's in summer, we figured we would never be there on our actual birthdays. So we each got a birthday button and wore it 2 days each during the trip. Since it wasn't my real birthday I kind of looked at people blankly when they said "Happy Birthday" and then after a bit I just felt bad because it really was not my birthday and I kind of felt like a fraud in a way. haha I don't really know how to explain it but that's the last time I will celebrate my birthday there when it's not.

I think with someone so small they won't make a big deal if it's not the exact birthday. It's worth it just to see the little ones smiles.

I might start wearing an "Unbirthday" button around the park. I went this year on the weekend before my birthday, so I could have easily worn my button for the whole 3 days, but I picked one day and decided that one was my "Disney birthday" so that I would only have the button/special treatment one day, to be fair.

That being said, I can't wait to go down for the F&W Half Marathon and wear my medal the days after the race. Sure, there will be thousands of others doing the same thing, but I'm hoping for some cute character interactions because of my medal.
