I’m surprised that Marni’s warning earlier in this thread that we’re not done losing beloved attractions didn’t warrant more conversation…

Hall of Pres? Or are they mad enough to do something to Big Thunder? Or something so crazy we can’t even imagine it yet…
I missed it, what was Marni’s warning? I looked but he posts so much it was hard to find.

Petition to put these all over the HM queue, (and also Liberty Square and Frontierland) right before they start work

I'm going with a wild card: killing Electric Water Pageant.

It's definitely not making them any money and I could definitely see them seeing it as outdated because it's not high tech.

Maybe they could repaint the rocks in Big Thunder Mountain to blend in more with the new, forest-like version of Frontierland.

Or maybe they can retheme Big Thunder Mountain to Bald Mountain and lump it in with the villains land!

Disney doesn't need a reason to replace something. Whether it's considered popular or not, if they feel the need to replace they will.
Exactly right.
Popularity may play a part to a degree. But it's not the only reason Disney keeps attractions or gives them the axe.
I'd say most reasons come before popularity. Starting with, what do we think will make us more money? That's the #1 reason first and foremost. Everything after is just used to justify the decision. Something like great movie ride. They made it seem like it wasn't popular. But it was 100% money driven. It was expensive to run, didn't move merch, would have been expensive to refurb. So run it into the ground, say it's not popular, and replace with Mickey! Then sell, sell, sell! Imagination is one of, if not the least popular attractions in all the parks. How long is that turd going to be allowed to sit? Answer? As long as figment has 3hr lines for popcorn buckets.

I'm not sure there's anything that is 100% sacred to current Disney management. That includes things like haunted mansion. If they believe there's a better opportunity, I believe they'll take it. Fans be damned.

I really think people trying to save the bottom island don't know how bad of shape that island is in. Any change beyond basic refurbishment would, unless I'm mistaken, require it all brought up to modern safety/Ada compliance. Which I don't believe a single square inch of that island is. If they were going to keep any part of the island, they would still basically need to demolish it and start over. At that point, why not have something new that might have a better chance at connecting with more people?

Plus, I understand the riverboat is a cool visual for the land, but if there's just the bottom half of the island then everything interesting to see on the riverboat ride will be gone and the ride will be incredibly underwhelmingly short. A riverboat ride that just loops around the bottom island would just be the world's most expensive set piece for the land while greatly limiting the options for bridges and other paths connecting to huge new lands making terrible bottlenecks for crowds

I hope parts of the river stay for aesthetic reasons (and the concept art does show parts of it staying, granted it also shows Paris Frontierland so take it with a grain if salt). But this really is an all or nothing kind of a deal

As a fan I don’t want to hear any of the ROI excuses. They have enough room to build Cars Land AND at the very least keep the bottom loop of the river between Mansion and Thunder. The river and Tom Sawyer island were never designed to be super high capacity. People couldn’t walk on water in the 50’s either. If the island was designed to be high capacity you wouldn’t need to take a raft to get there. So any argument that the River or island are underutilized is a moot point to me. It’s about the atmosphere. Cut the river in half, close what’s left of the island and dock the boat if you have to but don’t get rid of the whole thing. The Conspiracy theorist in me says this may have been the plan all along. Give fans the worst possible scenario and gauge the reaction. Then when you reel things back in a bit they re happy.

seeing the mansion, splash, big thunder, and the mills isn’t interesting?

And the boat ride would still be longer than the cars ride will be so unless you are saying the new cars ride will be “incredibly underwhelmingly short” that falls apart.

Those are all things you could see from walkways unlike the stuff in the back half which was nearly all unique. It's the same issue with the DAK boat ride except that doubled as transportation, had even more to see, and still got low enough guest scores it closed almost immediately in a park with next to nothing to do

Plus, the Cars ride presumably will have more going on than a slow boat ride

If you don’t like boat rides just say it haha. Most transportation rides you mostly see things you can see from the paths - just from a different perspective.

The DAK boats were way more complicated than that.

I ride the riverboat nearly every time I visit. I take the ferry at least oke way if not both ways to get into Magic just because i love it even though its almost always the slower option. I literally sell a t shirt that days "weird boat rides make theme parks better."

But I just don't see the point of keeping the riverboat if it's just going to be 1/3 of the path and the third with nothing unique to see. Especially if it makes all the villains land a nightmare to get in and out of.

Yeah. The views from the island are similar to the boat. Those different perspectives you can’t get from the paths on the “mainland” are great.

As others have said, they could probably add more around the river like they did at DL. I think that would be a great change. There are so many options they could’ve taken to improve the area instead of destroying it.
