Can we go to Disney World?

Just thought I'd Share...

This past Sunday, my wife & I were heading to her mother's to watch a movie etc., when my wife asks, "Can we go to Disney World?" Of course, she meant could we listen to one of the CDs we have of park music etc.

When we got to the bottom of our hill, I asked her, "Which way? Left or right?" Right would have taken us on our path to her mom's. Left would have lead us a bit further south :D .

We were both VERY tempted to just turn around, grab some clothes from home and start driving. I would've called out for a few days, and (so she says) if it hadn't been for an appointment about a new job for her, she may very well have said "left".

So close, yet so far....

Has anyone ever done something like that? Just picked up, spontaneously, and heading to the World?

I'd love to hear how it came about...

Perhaps, one time soon, we'll go left....:sohappy:

Just not soon enough....

Fraid not.............A trip to "The World" takes months to book & plan, just to ensure we get the flights on the right dates (next months trip was booked in January '02)
Oh I know we could just walk into the travel agents and pick up flights to Orlando, but when you've got two adults to arrange time off work and two kids who can only get time from school during holiday periods, its not easy
But, I can dream...............

I've been tempted several times, but haven't yet. My old boss did, though. He and his family were headed to a relative's wedding when they got to the highway that would lead them north to the wedding and south to Disney. He got the urge right there, and asked his wife and the boys which way they'd rather go (and they chose wisely :) ) He said they were lucky to get a room (Port Orleans--they usually prefer the Poly) because they booked it from Ocala.

I know how Captain Hook feels!!

I'm also from the U.K. and it takes months and months of planning (and saving?!) to go to WDW. I'd love to just drive out of my house and turn left toward WDW!

Entirely worth it though! :sohappy:

I've gone on just a few days notice, not exactly spur of the moment. Sometimes when you see an air sale, you just have to make two calls: airlines and WDW.
Off you go!

I agree that I am having the BEST time planning my trip in May, but that would be so wonderful to make that LEFT instead of the RIGHT!! It sounds like something that would happen only in a movie. :D

We did that once. My uncle and aunt were down there, and my dad got jealous. Since it was Christmas Break, and my dad had taken the 2 weeks off anyways, he goes "let's go" So, he went to work (he's a pediatrician) came home, and we left 2 hours later. Granted my sister had gone to stay with my cousin in chicago, so we drove 2 hours, got her, and went on our way. It was the BEST trip I've had. I keep telling my parents that we should do that again :D

not to disneyworld. but disneyland!

I got out of school one day and my mom was like "hey, want to go to disneyland?"

That night we bought plane tickets and packed our bags
the next morning we were leaving Oregon and enjoying fun in the sun! :)

Well, this trip in May was as spontaneous as a WDW trip can get I suppose. We saw how much our tax return would be, already had another trip planned in May and decided to cancel that and go to WDW instead, so yes... I guess we sort of did. But like it has been said, there is only so much "leave this instant" you can have for a trip to WDW. Plane Tickets... Hotels... packing... you need a little bit of time.

On the second weekend Epcot was open I convinced a couple friends to head down on Saturday morning -- about one hour's notice. We spent the day and drove back that night, but it wasn't too far -- Gainesville.

We've decided lots of times on a Friday night to go to Disney for a Saturday. But we live less than 2 hours away, we have yearly passes, and my wife's 2 brothers and family live in Orlando. So it really is not a big deal. We usually do a park until 3:00 when my son is winding down, and go over to one of the relatives house for a visit.

We had a good friend who worked at Disney and twice I remember going out with he and his girlfriend, and at dinner we'd decide to go ride Rocking Roller Coaster or Test Track. He'd sneak us in, but we still had to wait in line for the ride.

However, back when I was 8 or 9 (1978 ish), growing up in Louisiana, I remember my dad calling home from work on a Friday afternoon and telling my mom to pack for a vacation to DisneyWorld leaving the next day - our family's first and only trip to Disneyworld. My mom was a school teacher and we were all out for the summer. My dad ran the business and could take off without notice. A good friend of his who had moved to Orlando a year earlier, had just called and invited us to Orlando, and of course, Disney - which consisted of just the Magic Kingdom then. After hanging up with him, my dad got on the phone and booked tickets on National Airlines (New Orleans - Tampa - Orlando). His friend called back minutes later after booking a hotel near Disney for us. We stayed at his house 1 night, and the hotel 3 nights. We only visited Disney 2 days, but saw most everything. Thinking back, I actually wish that my dad would have given us more time for planning. As it was, we did not have much time to "get excited" - no anticipation and all that.

Yeah I've always wanted to live in someplace like Celebration (must keep dreaming though it's pretty costly) but after all the years I've been to Walt Disney World, it's much more fun living far away from it. I live in New York State, so going to Disney once or twice a year gets you really excited and anxious to go. If you lived there, it would get really boring after a while, and a vacation to you would be here in the snow in New York State.:p

I LOVE doing this sort of thing.....

Of course, it's MUCH easier being single!

At lunchtime on one particularly bad Thursday at work last summer, I was checking my email messages while I ate my soup, and "accidentally" hit the link for the WDW page instead.

Well....it was as if the planets had aligned and the angels were singing directly to me, because I "happen" to notice that the All-Star Resorts are having a SALE for like $55/night or something!

I smiled and went back to my email.

Well, as the afternoon got progressively worse, I swear the SALE price began showing up on every document I was examining. 55 here.....55 there.......By 3:55 I couldn't stand it any longer and knew I needed a break! Instead of heading to the snack bar for a Coke, I turned off my computer, grabbed my bag and ran to the car. I dialed the Disney Reservations number and booked 3 nights at the All-Star before I even got to the expressway, then turned towards the airport instead of towards home. I walked over to the Delta counter just in time to catch the evening flight to Orlando.

As I was boarding the plane, I called my friends in Miami who I hadn't seen in a few years, told them I was on my way down for the weekend and that they should meet me at the Orlando Airport when I get there.

By the time I landed, they had driven up to Orlando to meet me as I got off the plane. We stopped at Wal-Mart for me to get a pack of underwear and some shorts and shirts for the 3 days, then we were off to check-in at MUSIC!

The next morning at the All-Star bus stop to go to the Magic Kingdom, there were the 3 of us all calling in "sick" to work as the bus pulled up. Sick, alright.......SICK OF WORK!

A GREAT spontaneous (and CHEAP) weekend for all!!!

:sohappy:

THIS is what I'm talking about...spontaneous can be done...even from a great distance.

Who needs all that time to pack, book flights etc....JUST GO!!!!

The anticipation is great, and sometimes the BEST part of it all, but sometimes you just need to get away....

Gosh, you make me feel bad about our spontaneous trip. :( We usually plan it out two years in advance sometimes, for us, this May trip IS spontaneous.

Sorry, I didn't mean to downplay you or anyone else's experiences. I guess spontaneous can mean different thing to different people.

The post I quoted was more along the lines of what I was thinking. Just thining about it one moment, then being on the road or in the air within minutes or hours.

Again, I apologize for making you feel bad about your trip.

Everyone else, let's keep hearing about it!!!
